How active is the sims 3 community? My sims 2 keeps pink flashing and crashing all year after working perfectly for a while, probably windows being a cunt and I probably have to move to linux like all the sims 2 players are doing now, but for now i figured I'd give 3 a go, if there's still lots of good cc and mods for it. I only played it for a little while when it came out because I prefer rotational play and having control over every aspect of my town and functioning businesses rather than rabbitholes (OFB is the best dlc), but I could maybe go for a legacy challenge if I de-uglyfy the monstrosities. I hate the ugly shine and plasticky look clothes and hair have in 3 and their blob faces, but I need my sims fix. Any fav creators or mods? I know there's an amazing sims 1 old town recreation but doing rotational play in sims 3 looks like a hassle...

Get the new 25th anniversary Sims 2 release. They supposedly fixed a lot of things on modern computers, but I’m not sure about the pink flashing.

3 is… not great. Not just the fugly graphics. It’s a 32-bit program, which means that it can only use up to 4 Gb of RAM, regardless of how much your computer actually has. This typically isn’t a problem for older games, but it’s been a terrible problem since day 1 with TS3, because of the huge open world with everything active at once. The more sims you have: the harder the computer has to work to simulate the whole thing. It doesn’t take very long at all to hit that hard 4 Gb limit, especially when using the create a style tool. Even without a lot of CC the game largely grinds to a halt, then eventually gets responsive again. Or it crashes.

I was very active on MATY when TS3 came out, and Pescado’s general reaction was fuck the sims 3 from before it was released. He spent ages hammering away at his AwesomeMod, which was an attempt to fix how bad it was behind the scenes, but he was only slightly successful. One of the things he complained about the most was visiting community lots and how very few people would be there, because the game kept them from stopping what they were doing behind the scenes and swarm the lot you were on, he tried so many things to make more sims actually come to a lot you were on, but was never really successful.

EA finally updated the Mac version to 64-bit years ago, but it won’t run on Windows. They have yet to do the same for Windows, and just completely ignored it during the 25th anniversary stuff last year. Makes me wonder if it’s just that badly designed that converting it to 64-bit would be a lot of work they’re not interested in doing.

Despite the fugly graphics, it really is a shame that the game is only partially playable. It’s the last Sims game that had the Maxis sense of whimsy. Like, if you dig holes near the jail, you might help criminals escape.

The collection game loop was better too, because you could use a mod to add those spawners to your plot. In 4 you’re forced to run all around different worlds for a handful of spawns AND the spawns might not even be there when you are AND there’s no way to automatically make a round. The one mod I found to automate it would crash my game every time.

There are mods and CC out there, Pleasant Sims is a great resource for finding the ones still available. Pescado still has his mods at More Awesome Than You and probably will until he dies. You don’t need to register either, unless you want to read the old slap fights we had on the all topics boards. The forum is pretty dead these days.

TS3 is a lot of fun, but it’s also short bus special for technical reasons.

Ignore what people say about the pink flashing, it's manageable as long as you keep some memory on your PC, people are saying it's a glitch or bug but the pink soup is a result of memory leak, and I did fix it a couple of times. Sims 3 is manageable with NRASS if on PC, but besides the point just keep less things open when playing Sims 2.

I recall people on tumblr saying they didn't really fix anything, and that some mods are incompatible with it too, I don't think I could part with any of the mods that I have. The people playing on linux claim they can throw a lot more cc at it before they have issues, and I really love making detailed towns and homes so playing without cc is impossible for me. The game is being really stupid now and works one day and the next day it crashes immediately, before that it would work consistently for about 4 hours before it ran out of texture memory and crashed.
Apparently they added new bugs with the 25th anniversary release too https://www.tumblr.com/l-1-z-a/tagged/sims 2 rerelease
I will probably just have to dust off an old linux pc i had, if I can remember my password lol. I am technologically illiterate so idk why it works better, but apparently a lot of older games in general run better on it.

I played a little of 3 today and even with the NRASS fixes I was already getting issues so as in game time passes it willl only get buggier...don lothario's legacy is off to a poor start. Why did they do such a poor job programming sims 3, 4 sucking I can understand, it's a shitty online game made to be single player in a rush. I might give up on the sims for the time being because all of them have issues... well sims 1 runs pretty well but without aging+genetics it's not as fun.

I might want to read the slap fights and raging over sims 3, I never really got into it like I did 2 so I didn't pay attention to the sims community at the time, but I enjoy some sims bitching.

yeah I generally keep everything else closed because I noticed it can make a difference, but it's still being really inconsistent on if it will work or not

I only ran into it once. And I have the Mr. DJ Repack.

do you have a lot of cc and mods?
the hood deco fucks it up quick
I had a lot of CC, but other then that, it's completely fine, I was unforunate to not play this game sooner as I was born in the year it came out, I grew up on the Sims 3, and i can confirm it ran like shit on my mom's IMac, it would not load into CAS and I had to turn it off. Downside was, I never had her password.

I find TS3 perfectly playable, it just has a few specific issues that need tended to for it to not shit the bed (but the same can be said for the other games too tbh). NRASS mods are basically mandatory. If you have a halfway decent PC you can fix pretty much every complaint you'd have, including the plastic lighting.

Not on PC but if anyone is genuinely interested I can share a bunch of links. I'm insane and autistic so I have my game mostly modded for more historical low-tech games but I'd be happy to give pretty much every fix and improvement I can think of.

Please do, I uninstalled Sims 4, and I was done with that niggerfaggot mess.

I am interested! I never played sims 3 long enough to really mod it a lot like I do with sims 2, so maybe I could improve it enough to enjoy it. Do you mean you play like a medieval or some other time period game? I really wanted to set my sims 2 up for medieval but all the medieval mods would make it crap out even worse than my normal cc folder, but the sims 2 medieval mods are really amazing so if sims 3 has a big historical modding community too that would be great. I should probably just make a new tumblr to follow sims 3 blogs to find the good shit. I just have to figure out if I can enjoy this game as much as 2 before putting in the hours to mod it so much and seeing other people's worlds might help.

Yes, I play a lot of homesteading and ye olde type saves (though not always a specific time pwriod). Due to the Sims Medieval being based off 3 and open world + horses I'd say it has a very dedicated historical playerbas. There are full UI ports and everything.

Since people are interesting I'll see what I can draft up tomorrow after work. I'll focus mostly on performance/fixes and general "de uglifying" but if anyone has any specific requests let me know and I'll do a write up on those as well, I've been modding this damn game for ten years so I have quite a lot of resources. It's vwey impressive how far things have come just in the past few years.

That would be great, thank you! I might go for historical too. I would also like to ask you and anyone else still playing the sims 3, what is your playstyle? Is it mostly legacy? My sims 2 playstyle was rotational with spreadsheet autism, and I'd like to find the best way to play sims 3 too. What I read for sims 3 rotational play on pleasantsims blog sounds like a lot of steps i might forget to do and mess it up

It's funny how I was playing like that on Sims 4 before getting rid of it. I liked the english map a lot, it was a nice contrast against my cyberpunk Mishuno. You might make me play Sims 3, friend.

I played mostly 2, but I always go for legacy and seeing how the generations shape up. I also love to build and repurpose other people's lots and shells, more than half of my time on this series is just building.

I very specifically play a lot of low-pop challenge style saves. I'm not much for the social aspect of the game but I enjoy building things up almost like a colony sim. A lot of "pioneers settling the wild and every generation I get to add a new rabbithole" or "post apocalypse colony scavenging for resources" type beats. My current save is about a local farm family who are slowly building up a respectable horse business from some strays they caught eating their carrots, lol.

Rotational play in S3 is different because the neighborhoods don't go into stasis. You can play a family, rotate put, then come back and who knows what they'll be up to because they decided to do shit while you were away. How much you need to do depends a lot on whether this bothers you or not. There's some extra menus to navigate but it's not that much more work inherently.

Well, big drama in the Sims 4 modding community. A recent addition of a pay-to-play modding marketplace (lol EA remains a bunch of retarded Saudi-bought scammers) has caused everyone's game to crash/not open correctly/decimated all of their mods.

Even though they allegedly fixed the issue for the base game (not the 100,000+ overpriced expansions), they're saying it's on modders (remember that this community is over 10+ years old and most modders are out of the game now) to fix the issues, not them, which has caused massive chimpouts. Sadly, this is also happening to people who don't have ANY mods installed aka casuals.

As funny as this is, I can't blame the players for being royally pissed. This game has already been broken since its inception and mods are the only thing that makes it somewhat playable as the base gameplay is trash.

I understand their pain. After that update my main save file, that I've been playing for seven years, won't load and may be corrupted. I feel very distraught.

Oof, that sucks. I've been playing in offline mode without updating but this trash game is so buggy it often crashes anyway, even with BetterExceptions installed to regulate mods, etc.

It's a shame EA is such a disaster because while the overall game is fairly retarded, it is usually pretty and fairly relaxing to play IN SPITE of its many challenges, and with good mods installed it's pretty fun.

I'd go back to Sims 3 but that one has its share of issues too, even though it's a great game.

I tried rotational in 3, but all the setting up you had to do and the stuff to switch families felt too annoying. The game would still mess with the other families even when you weren't playing them too, I remember it particularly liked to shuffle careers around, especially for unemployed sims, just so the family you were playing had a boss and coworkers.

4, despite its issues, I found to be the best of both worlds, between 2 not aging any non-player sims at all and 3 constantly messing with them. You can choose which families age easily, so you can control it for the families you play without needing to play EVERYONE and becoming the Chinese government enacting the one child policy so you're not swamped in the next generations by Alexander Goth's 15 grandkids etc.

4 being 4 though the automated stuff still has its problems even with MCCC to control it. Sometimes in a long lived save you'll have to clean out the incest marriages, elders with unrealistically young kids and super families that take up a huge block of the total sim count.

Are there any mods for 4 that limit the skin selection for newly generated townies? If you delete all the premades your game fast looks like it's set in fucking Nigeria because the number of black skins greatly outnumbers the white ones (Most of which look ugly in their own right, especially outside the warm set). I think Sims 4 Studio can limit outfits but I didn't see an option for skintones.

I remember seeing a skin replacement mod with barely any black tones, but it's been a while. Seems like it's easier to simply replace the default skintones of the game with more white ones, but such a mod would obviously be banned on most sites and can be tricky to find.

I prefer the gallery method: set MCCC to import new townies from your gallery; then all you have to do is hunt for sims for your gallery. The only problem is: if you want some of the default townies from the neighbours, you need to play in that neighbour for some minutes so the defaults guys will load and then you set MCCC like that. You can also set up a way to spawn only other people's sims (or only your sims if you abolutely want to have full control), and even use tags to choose wich sims can and cannot be imported as townies. It's a neat option from MCCC and once you discover it you never go back to vanilla townies.
