Anyway I came to the thread because I'm seeing people discuss Jim Henson's Dinosaurs. It reminded me of how classic Simpsons threw direct shade on that show.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=jJsjGeEbjRoI really don't understand why The Simpsons writing team clearly thought Dinosaurs was ripping them off. I guess you could argue that the lead Earl SNEED Sinclair was a Homer Simpson-esque TV Father as he was a bumbling but well meaning blue collar Dad. But The Simpsons certainly didn't invent such a character, could argue that Dinosaurs was likely inspired by John Goodman's "Dan Connor." The alleged ripping off totally falls apart trying to say Robbie and Baby Sinclair were rip offs of Bart and Maggie.

The Dinosaurs Wikipedia page does say that the show only got Greenlit due to The Simpson's breakout success, but I don't see how The Simpsons team could have been mad that American television was daring to be more experimental in an attempt to produce more breakout comedies. Still this scene is one of the odder moments of the show being downright petty.
I watched the first eight or nine seasons with commentary last year, at one point they accuse King of the Hill of ripping them off. Not a specific scene either just the whole show. I'd like to think they were joking but I think it's just a case of inflated egos.

UGGGGHHH.

Why do so many of the creators of my favorite shows have to be such massive pigfuckers??

https://youtube.com/watch?v=Jzhba6hw0oQHonestly if you didn't tell me if they recast Judge Snyder I probably wouldn't have noticed. Probably because Judge Snyder is one of the least memorable original characters the Simpsons have who only served to move the story along. His voice was just styled to be one of authority so such a change doesn't hamper anything.

But Dr. Hibbert, yeah this is a bad change. In my ears he just doesn't sound anything like Dr. Hibbert whose voice by Harry Shearer reflected a friendly caring warmth.
Eh, you can tell it's not Harry, but I was honestly expecting much worse. Then again, he didn't do the laugh, so there's a chance it'll sound more fucked up in the future.

How come they recast Carl and Dr Hibbert but dropped Apu entirely? Apu was closer to a main cast member than either of those two characters.

Because it wasn't just about the voice. The poo in the loo raged about the entire character in general.

NOOOOOOOOOOO! HE WAS A HORRIBLE RAYCISST CHARACATURE AND ALL THE KIDS SAID 'THANK YOU, COME AGAIN' TO ME WHICH IS AKIN TO RAAAAAAAAAAAAPE.

Apu hasn't had a speaking role in the show for over 3 years now. The writers had essentially forgotten his character. regardless of the VA change.

I think that was still Harry, the way he sounded in the latest episode is much worse than that.

Like Carl, the new VA fluctuates between being sorta similar and too high pitched, it's very off putting.

Kevin's got a voice so recognizable, I'm just surprised they don't just retire Hibbert. I certainly know Harry's not a fan of these recasts either, and I can't say I don't blame him. These recasts are either "close, but not quite" where they can get one or two lines down, but then slip up, especially on the longer ones; being applied to characters who are incredibly irrelevant at this point (Anyone else noticed that Lewis, that black kid that used to hang with Bart early in the show, also got recast? I thought not, and I don't blame you), or it's so blatantly obvious, like with Hibbert, that it sticks out.

Last I checked, the show was in pre-production back when The Simps were still a mostly obscure series of commercial bumper shorts on Tracey Ullman's show.

I think they're honestly willing to go for this diversity woke cast change because they're bracing for the inevitable: Death of the one of the lead VAs.

The Simpsons cast is surpisingly fairly young for a show that's now been on air for 30+ years, Hank Azaria and Yeardly Smith are only in their 50s. But Julie Kavner and Harry Shearer are now senior citizens, and IMO Harry has looked fucking OLD for well over a decade. Given they're all fabulously wealthy from the show and its residuals I personally don't expect them to die anytime soon, but if one of those two get some awful cancer well you can have all the money in the world & sterling doctors you can still die quickly.

The show's precedent is to just retire characters when their VAs die, as they did with Phil Hartman's roles. But you can't have The Simpsons without Marge. Recasting the dark skinned minor characters prepares the staff and the weirdo superfans for the inevitable.

Honestly, if it weren't for the paycheck, Julie Kavner probably would've said "fuck this shit" and bailed years ago. Having to do such a raspy voice like Marge isn't good for anyone's throat, and the degradation of her voice over the years is proof of that. I can't even make fun of bad it's gotten. It's like making fun of cancer patient in a wheelchair - it feels way to low, and you both look and feel like a total dick. No satisfaction.

Honestly, I can see the woke shit being a front for something like that since it kills two birds with one stone. It prepares them for the inevitable recasts while satiating the dangerhairs and beardos at Disney and Woke Twitter, but it would be a lot better if they just ended the show.

Al Jean was always adamant about never ending the show and going above and beyond to deny any possibility of the show's decline but that was mainly due to a 25-year old grudge against some random nobodies on Usenet and while Disney is all about "Trigger the fans and own the fans", they've got enough "Fuck You!" money from the classic seasons and selling merchandise that it would probably be more profitable to let the series die and hype up the finale.
