What's that one guy saying in that movie that "made every Indian critic's top 400 list" (with that "I'm in love with lovely Johnny" song)? Seems search engines can't find jack shit anymore.

Wiggum is a textbook shit cop. He's lazy, unprofessional, trigger happy and completely incompetent. Literally the only good thing you can say about hid police work is he's not racist.
Well he is a good father to his retarded son and his marrage seems stable. He's also pretty cordial with all the criminals he arrests. He's not a bad guy he's just in the wrong profession. God help the People of Springfield for having the hero they deserve but not the one they need.

No, Chief, Bob's innocent.
Innocent, hah? That sounds like the testimony of crazy old @vertexwindi .

I looked up the scene on Frinkiac and the caption read (speaking Hindi).

So I guess if you don't speak Hindi, you'll never know.

I'm glad more people are appreciating the first season for what it could've been.
Yeah the first season actually set up a lot of things that were meant to become running jokes in the series. For example when Herman first appeared and told that possible story about how he lost his arm, it was supposed to be a different story everytime he appeared. Also botz was set up to be the show's villain which is why the episode ends with her escaping. She would reappear using a new name and profession and possibly a disguise since the family would recognize her. At least this role did go to sideshow Bob

Wiggum's schtick is that he's blisteringly incompetent... not that he's corrupt (he is, but that's not the point) or racist (which he isn't). The fact he's not particularly mean or nasty is just a way to get enough sympathy from the audience for the joke about him locking his keys in his cruiser or being more interested in donuts than catching Snake to be funny without turning into a hyper-charged argument over actual police incompetence/corruption.

He's a straight guy who FAILS to act in time to do any good, but is rarely if ever the source of the problem.

His "job" within the show dynamic is to fail to save the day when someone else (Homer, Fat Tony, etc) ruins it with actual malicious or selfish behavior.

He's not a proactive idiot, he's as passive as they come.

He's like Larry on the 3 stooges - the only one smart enough to see that Moe's plan, as being carried out by Curly, won't work, but ultimately lacks the competence/nerve/ability to do anything to stop it, in essence, he's funny because he can SEE the train coming, but lacks the ability to get off the tracks before getting run down due to fate and weak willed constitution.

Note that Wiggum does everything "wrong" you can as a cop EXCEPT actually frame someone/commit brutality. (what happened to Steve Sax aside)

You know that does make you wonder though, if all it took was some no name "Comedian" to get rid of Apu how long till BLM forces the writers to get rid of the cops in the show? We already have MSNBC calling to end all cop/crime dramas so asking a show that already gave a pound of flesh to do so again isn't totally out of the realms of possibility.

Now that I think about it they could do an episode about the police resigning and have lifetime criminals like Snake stop because they were more interested in being chased. Make a really hamfisted message about communities not needing cops and taking care of themselves top it off with Lisa giving a speech about needing mor mony for dem programs. It fit right in with zombie Simpsons

"Hey! That looks like Princess Di!"

"Oh wait, it's just a pile of rags."

This is a joke that should have aged badly like "Apple computers? What computers?" But still works because the writing and comedic timing is perfect.

So Im re-watching Lisa's pony and there's minor detail I noticed and it's kinda a running thing though the shows early years. Whenever we see a video game console it's a few years behind in terms of of what consoles were capable of.

Lisa's pony aired in November of 1991 the same year the snes was launched, but a video game we see briefly looks more like an Atari 2600 game and controller. A few years later the video game disemboweler IV (homer badman 1994) resembles an nes cartridge even though the ps1 was released just a month later.

By the late 90s early 2000s they kinda got caught up on what game consoles looked like and functioned. We saw a proper ps1 in Lisa gets and a and brothers little helper. Chalk it up to the staff being younger and more in touch with stuff like that by then though that was the early dork age of the show.

When you see discrepancies like that, it's because a wizard did it.

Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

Worst. Episode. Ever.

Given the earlier seasons were written by Boomer gen people, they probably hadn't played video games since the Atari and simply went with what they knew from outside glances.

My Boomer Mom, to the day she died, could not be convinced that "ecksbawks" and "nintendo super" were not the "same thing". I had to stop her numerous times from almost buying incompatible games as presents for others as this cognitive flaw went back to the ORIGINAL NES in 1987.

"The Sega doesn't play Nintendo games, Ma'

"But, they're both video games"

"Yeah, but, like Ford and Chevy, they're different brands"

"Oh, so Nintendo Super is just more like an Atari?"

...

...

...

"No, Ma...."

Once again not like I know shit since I only have a hyper geek admiration of 90s The Simpsons and good cartoons in general. So this post is total dork speculation.

I imagine the art design of objects like a video game system was made by the storyboard artists, most likely the credited director of the episode. Now you don't have to be an artist to know that drawing the iconic Atari Joystick is significantly easier than drawing and animating the then modern flat SNES/Genesis controller. The stubby Simpson hands can perfectly grip the controllers. 99% certain the first use of a video game was Season 1's "Moaning Lisa" where Bart and Homer fight in a Boxing game that parodied the style of NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out.

Nice little nod to the roots of Simpsons the referee is in the style of Groening's Akbar and Jeff who share a striking similarity to Mario. BTW notice how the artists captured the blurry visuals of old CRT televisions to give it a more video-gamey feel. Whoever was in charge of this scene cared, I can't think of another cartoon that bothered to add such details.

Anyway animation back then was difficult work, the Simpsons kept the Atari controllers because it just is easier to draw and generally once an object is made in a cartoon it's held onto as long as reasonably possible. Personally I love the anachronism that Bart used a controller that debuted in 1977. In a way it keeps within the style that The Simpson family are dirt poor and Homer and Marge are too cheap to buy Bart a modern gaming system. Probably isn't an intentional detail but it reminds me of the scene in classic South Park where Kenny's family is revealed to be so poor that their video game entertainment is a B&W Television and bloody Colecovision.
