I suppose it's the people who lived in those places that sometimes find it hard to accept their fate when it's namedropped on a big show like The Simpsons. I always think back to the episode where Bart visited a box factory and the class were told that the finished boxes were done up in Flint, Michigan. I wonder how many Flint natives found that a little too on the nose to their then/current situation (Flint once being an auto industry giant in its day).

Fun fact, Harold Ramis himself couldn't believe he made the scene and said that he probably do it in a more politically correct way if he were to do it again.
 
Speaking of the box factory, the DVD commentary says they wanted the most mind-numbingly boring sound effect - that quiet squeaky creaking - for the noise of the box factory running, IIRC.

That scene was very well crafted. The sound effects, just how laborously slow the box machine is and small details like how long it takes the flap to slide off the boxes. It's perfect.

Reminds me of when I was a kid and we drove by the Hershey Theme Park and it was closed during the season and for some reason there was a ghetto right next to it. Nothing but blacks. My dad drove through it and my mother was pissed at him and said she was going to puke while my dad laughs.

I saw similar sentiments from my parents as well. I'm sure it's a generational thing. People unaware of their transformed environment seem to have a natural distaste for it. My folks used to call a good portion of my city "color town" for that reason.

LMAO I always wondered why they chose Flint Michigan of all places!

That's just a TV studio where they film Krusty the Klown and other non-box-related programs. Since it has nothing to do with boxes, I'll just shut these blinds.
 
I like how Principal Skinner and Martin are the only ones who are genuinely excited to go on the factory tour (again). Even during that yellow line around the desk part of the tour.
