I never knew that the Simpsons did a ripoff of "Run Lola Run," But tonight I watched S12E18 "Trilogy of Error." It aired after I stopped regularly watching the Simpsons, and so this was my first time seeing this episode. (Tbh if I *had* seen it new, I wouldn't have gotten the reference. haha)

It's an interesting concept for sure, but nonetheless it's certified Zombie Simpsons.

Exactly. If Skinner were a Vietnam vet, he'd be pushing 70 now, unless he forged his birth certificate to serve in the war prior to being 17.

The thing about the floating timeline is that no matter what, they always portray Homer and Marge going to prom in the 1970s, which makes no fucking sense. They've already retconned Homer and Marge to being Gen-X grunges in the 1990s (seriously, what the fuck), but in Zombie Simpsons they still show them at a high school dance where everyone has afros and bell bottoms.
Not to mention that early episodes portrayed grandpa as a vet of both ww2 and the first world war. Sure the joke is he was a toddler at the time because the second world war broke out twenty years after the first but keep in min. IRL as of 2011 there are no living vets of ww1 left alive. Not even teenagers who lied about their age. There's a reason why archer had to kill off Wodehouse other than for drama. It became too unbelievable for the show that he'd be alive as time went on

The episode where Bart becomes an SJW and spray paints 'The patriarchy is a wiener' on a wall.
"What happened to you man? You used to be cool."

What goes around comes around eh Bart?

Even having Grandpa Simpson as a WW2 vet seems dubious now, because in the Flying Hellfish episode, his rank is shown as Master Sergeant [E-8], which meant he couldn't have been a teenager in the war; he'd have to serve for several years prior to getting that rank, and it's unlikely that he was like 17 or 18 with that rank.

My grandpa's highest rank was a Sergeant (E-5) during the war. He was like 20 when Pearl Harbor happened (when he enlisted), and was honorably discharged after the war as an E-5. Unless Abe Simpson had the fighting abilities of fucking John Rambo but with a fake birth certificate, there's no way he could be a E-8 platoon leader and a teenager.

IIRC They retconned it into being a 70's themed dance

After a while they didn't even care about continuity of what service or even what theater he supposedly served in. Going from clearly in the Army in the European one (The Hellfish) to the Marine Air Service in the Pacific for a Christmas episode gag.....

It still could've been funny if it was a running gag that Grandpa can't remember exactly what he did during the war, and has picked up a false history stitched together from newsreels and other people's memories (I mostly piece it together from sugar packets) due to dementia. Or if it was played up as Grandpa being a Colonel McBragg figure who actually has fought in every war and been there at every decisive battle, winning them all unseen by the history books.....

But, the Hellfish episode develops a pretty solid continuity, giving names, places, ranks, chronology... and is as respectful of it as you can be in a comedy that's playing loose with the facts (Abe apologizes to the other deceased squad members at their graves for "Breaking" their tontine, something that wasn't even needed to advance the plot, but was deference due as their CO, showing his character) No surprise that the writers later shredded it all just for apparent want of not caring anymore.

You wonder why they don't get why continuity matters, how they can't see investing in learning someone's back story only to render it moot by pulling a Disney Star Wars/ Terminator Dark Fate retcon can make us all so upset? They don't give a fuck about their characters backstories, they're just conduits for the story and merch to flow through, what Grandpa Simpson did in WWII doesn't matter to them, why should it to you? IN fact, why should it matter what he did? He can be a WWII vet this week, a Civil War vet the next, why does it matter? right?

'I never thought I could shoot down a German plane, but last year I proved myself wrong.'

I wonder if the rewrite to local language punches up the humor to suit the tastes?

They do that for Middle Eastern dubs of the Simpsons. Since alcohol is forbidden in Islam, Duff Beer is rewritten as being soda.

Another fun fact is that in European dubs, preexisting Simpsons characters who have accents from European countries are rewritten to be from different countries.

For example, in the German dub of the show, the foreign exchange student Uder speaks with an Austrian accent: this means they can get around the fact that he has a different accent than the other students, and that's he's still a foreigner. Another example in the French dub of the Simpsons, where Apu speaks French with a Portuguese accent.

Yo, does anyone remember reading the Simpsons comics?
like the one where Grandpa becomes a graffiti artist, and the Simpsons working on Krusty's show
I remember a Christmas special called winter Wingding. It was a decent collection of winter/christmas stories including a funny scene at the kwik e mart where reverend lovejoy doesn't know whether to be offended that a Hindu is selling sugary depictions of Jesus Christ or the fact that chocolate Santas are outselling them

I think I remember the early Bongo Radioactive Man more
Also iirc the Simpsons magazine before that was an early appearance of Hey Arnold before the cartoon
