I've discussed this with my dad in the past since he was a big Simpsons fan in the 90s, and he said that it should end with the power plant blowing up, taking Springfield with it.

I kinda want to see that too.

I heard someone say a cool ending would be Homer waking up after falling into a coma after failing to jump Springfield gorge revealing that most of the series was just Homer's dreams and Lisa and Bart who are now happy and successful with families of their own take Homer to Mo's for a beer.

That would be pretty cool. I've also heard something similar where Homer's coma was caused by Bart's shaken beer can prank, but otherwise was the same.

Another interesting one would be if it all turned out to be Homer's own tv show based on his family doing crazy things he once mentioned wanting to create.
 
My personal idea for the finale would've been to do an episode about Homer trying to bond with his kids only for him to fail because of generational differences (like wanting to get Bart a chocolate milkshake which Bart would note is lame or buy Lisa some album she already has on Spotify or something). Slowly Homer realizes he feels disconnected from everyone as we see him at work, the bar, bowling alley etc so he seeks out Abe for advice who'd tell him that it's normal for Homer to feel this way because he's getting old and out-of-touch and lame. The last scene would be the family having dinner at the table while all meekly distracting themselves with their phones.

I think there was an episode about this. It was called Homerpalooza, but it was more Homer's frustration with the current generation instead of just Bart and Lisa. It's where that "I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was" quote comes from.

I haven't seen it but yours is less comedic and more realistic (Homerpalooza has Homer hanging out with rock bands like Cypress Hill and Smashing Pumpkins).

Yeah that was a good episode. Didn't even have it in mind when I come up with the idea.
 
Have Homer murder his entire family and then get shot in a shootout with the police after killing Chief Wiggum.
 
I hope someone has the sense to end it before they have to retcon Homer and Marge into millennials.

Now that I think about it I kind of like the idea of grandpa Simpson being a Vietnam vet better. It makes the story line involving Homer's hippy mother way more interesting.

You know what, this reminded me of a really bizarre moment in a somewhat recent episode. It was the one where Cheech and Chong came back and Homer tells Bart that Cheech and Chong were the Beavis and Butt-head of their day and Bart responds, "Who are Beavis and Butt-head?"

It was such a strange bit because Bart has existed longer than Beavis and Butt-head and had to have been directly compared to them back when that show was around. But because The Simpsons outlasted Beavis and Butt-head and because it exists in some bizarre floating timeline, Bart would be too young to know who they are.

Even back when I saw it, that moment threw me for a loop.

The entire point of the show was satirizing the 90s. That's why in 2018 it still has a character written as parody of Ted Kennedy.
 
Since I've been on a near-autistic binge on the Civil War and historical reenactment here lately, I figured I'd leave these here.
