Was this really an official thing?

Fucking damn, I hate the age of virtue signaling so fucking much.

Well...yeah. It was written specifically for the Archies. At the time they were sort of a virtual band like the Gorillaz only more corporate. It's kind of insane thinking about it now.
It was a little of both at the time, it probably helped they had Don Kirshner produce the music for the show that led to The Archie's brief rise on the charts with that song. Kirshner was known for picking good talent and it showed through his career.

Homer's like 32 right? For him to be his cannon age currently he'd be an early millennial.

Was curious about that myself. Apparently his canon age seems to be 39, but he's been 34, 36, 38, and 40 at various times.

Marge seems to be canonically 34-36 but that's inconsistent as well, and she's also been mentioned to be the same age as Homer.

Which would explain why he's so unlikeable now (Homer's 39 I believe, Marge is 32)
I recall him saying he was 36 in the earlier seasons (Marge celebrated her 34th birthday in season 1). I wouldn't surprise me their ages shifted a lot over the years as long as they kept them around their mid 30's.

Early/mid thirties sounds right. Bart is ten and early seasons portray Bart's birth as being shortly after they graduated high school.

But would he care about the name of the stupid pirate?
Oh, I loved that one!

EDIT: Watching it again, I love the look of those futuristic desks with the tiny monitors and touchscreen pads with those wired styluses. The satellite outside the school probably dates this a lot more considering we already saw something like that with "Channel One" news programs being beaned into classrooms in the 90's.

This gag is so fucking surreal once you think about it, I love it
The David Mirkin years (Seasons 5 + 6) struck the perfect balance between the standard Simpsons humor and more out there stuff. Some fans were divided, but we can all agree he's better at it than Al Jean nowadays.
