I'm avoiding despair until I see what happens on Black Monday. If Pete doesn't announce his retirement sometime in January or Russ doesn't start whining to the media about wanting a trade I'm gonna be worried.
I watched this man stare down wide open receivers in the midfield only to then throw an incomplete moon ball to Lockett in double coverage like three times tonight. If I wanted to watch that brand of football I'd go catch some Brett Favre highlights, he was way better at doing that.
 
I'm starting to think Miami has some for real Angels In the Outfield juju going on. This run is so unexpected it seems almost divine. I'm scared to actually say this, but, I think they might be a contender. There some straight up spiritual manipulation type shit going on here.

"On behalf of the entire NFL family, we extend our condolences to Virginia, Mike, Joe and their families," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "We all know him as the Hall of Fame coach of the Oakland Raiders and broadcaster who worked for every major network, but more than anything, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

"Nobody loved football more than Coach. He was football. He was an incredible sounding board to me and so many others. There will never be another John Madden, and we will forever be indebted to him for all he did to make football and the NFL what it is today."

Madden was only 32 when then-Raiders owner Al Davis hired him to coach Oakland in 1969. Before leaving the sideline for the announcing booth in 1978, Madden led Oakland to a 103-32-7 regular-season record and a victory in the 1977 Super Bowl.

Oakland never had a losing record under Madden, winning seven division titles and making the playoffs eight times.

Madden was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006, 28 years after coaching his final game.

But he had gained even more fame as an analyst on NFL telecasts and for the football video game that bears his name -- EA Sports' "Madden NFL." Some players who have graced the Madden cover have struggled the following season, spurring the fan myth of the "Madden curse."

RIP John Madden, just saw it scrolling on ESPN. Yeah he was known for “whoever scores the most points will win this game” and shit like that, but still RIP a guy that was a fixture while I was learning what football is, hopefully he is eating turducken in the sky. And also drove the madden mobile there.

I found out about Madden’s passing when I was at the gym. In return, I kept thinking about how this was the first Madden game I ever played.

Guy left a big hole in sports gaming for sure, though it’s a shame that current day EA is milking Madden in the most soulless way possible.

Either way, thanks for the memories John.

His contract runs out this year and they've been getting Mike Tirico ready to replace him. I have no problem with the guy but I like playing the game of "guess if you ever see Michaels' top row of teeth".

Saw them once in 15 years of football, doubt I'll see 'em again.

Yeah, my wife likes playing the “find his painted hair line” game and there was one of the match series where he showed up (Koepka / DeChambeau?) where he was shown golfing and holy shit he looked different. But I’ll be sad when he quits, same with Collinsworth.

I’m going to have to add the teeth thing to this.
 
RIP John Madden. You were too pure for this world.

ETA: I just remembered that there was brand new documentary on Madden released on Christmas, and I have it on DVR. Just got home from work for the night, gonna crack some beers and watch it right now.

Rip madden, one of the best personalities in the history of sports has gone to the other hall of fame.
 
I will never forget the time John Madden unknowingly drew a penis on national television.
