I've never seen any of the Eva's nor do I know anything of the plot.

Is it worth watching today or is it dated nostalgia fuel?
Pick a season of gundam at random and watch while playing Linkin Park on a boombox and eating stale cream corn.

That will give you the definitive Evangelion experience

I gave one of the (3?) versions of this show the 5 episode test and tapped out. Main character is a sad sack even by anime standards and it didn't really resonate with me.
This is how I view the Evangelion fandom:

i never watched the rebuild movies so I really don't have an opinion on them .( are they worth it ?)
I freaking love the series and the eoe movie , but i hear the rebuild movies are completely different
The first two rebuilds are basically the series up to EoE, with a few variations here and there (they get more noticeable in 2.22). The third is a departure and lands us in totally new territory. The fourth is coming out next March, so you have time to catch up if you're interested. There's a theory that the rebuilds are like a reality bending sequel as opposed to a retread. Whether that's true or not has yet to be concluded, but at the very least the animation is slick and the soundtracks are pretty great.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if you like the series and EoE, you'll probably enjoy the rebuilds.

I played Xenogears before I tried watching NGE and one of the most hotly debated topic in a forum I was on is "Does Xenogears totally rip off NGE or not?"

Xenogears did the Christian imagery thing with actual meaning, for better or worse depending on who you ask (with Saga really driving it home with Jesus).

In Eva it was all just used as something to set it apart at the time from other shows (and most of it is obscure jewish terms like the angel names) while its theme is more Buddhist (all returns to nothing, ect).

I do feel for sure Square was influenced heavily in the making of Xenogears and FFVII by Eva.

Fake news.

Fake news.

From the source:

Kazuya Tsurumaki: There are a lot of giant robot shows in Japan, and we did want our story to have a religious theme to help distinguish us. Because Christianity is an uncommon religion in Japan we thought it would be mysterious. None of the staff who worked on Eva are Christians. There is no actual Christian meaning to the show, we just thought the visual symbols of Christianity look cool. If we had known the show would get distributed in the US and Europe we might have rethought that choice.

I love Universal Century Gundam more than Eva but that shit is worse in the teen angst department.

I know the source, dumbdumb. But why should the head art director in charge of the *initial* decision be the ultimate authority? He's not.

It's clear as fuck that the show wasn't intended to be what it became after Anno flipped out. That quote is basically meaningless and the consistent, religious (hah) adherence to it is autistic as Hell.

Well, listening to the entire world scream in terror as they were reduced to pudding was good for a laugh.

They even changed some of the Christian stuff in the translations, for example "angel" instead of "apostle".
No one who thinks EVA is SOOO deep even notices that because it's all so meaningless.

You're a dumb nigger.

If that thread was more than one post with the phrase "yeah, totally, deal with it" then you were posting on a forum full of morons.

I love NGE mostly because it takes a giant shit on all mecha anime - it starts off as a normal mecha show for about 16 episodes, then the kids all lose their fucking minds because why wouldn't they, they're teenagers in robot suits, what do you think would happen if you cross PTSD and hormones? The crazy fucking scene with Shinji just jacking off over Asuka while she's in a coma in the hosptial is the epitome of "hey, maybe it's not a good idea to put children in giant robot suits?" - it feels like a deeply realistic outcome to me from that scenario. Yeah, obviously they didn't know how to end the show, but I applaud subverting such an obviously stupid trope (teenagers in giant robot suits).

It's isn't even a mecha thing.
Most mecha anime are made for teenage demographics, so of course the protagonists are gonna be teenagers just like most non-mecha shonen. Never thought it was such an interesting point to make - it's anime not real life (ignore Gundam ZZ's lies).

You could take the end as an extreme version of Gundam's Newtypes and their empathic/telepathic connection if you want to go the subversive route.

It's the greatest grimdark edgelord UFO/Ultraman crossover fanfic ever animated.
