After walking out of playoff games on Wednesday night in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake and the scourge of systemic racism in America, the NBA players association has come to an agreement with the league to complete the playoffs inside the COVID-safe “bubble” in DisneyWorld. But as part of that agreement, the NBA’s League arenas will be converted to polling places for the November election.

This doesn’t mean every stadium in every city will be a polling location (though, to be honest, it should), but it does mean that in cities where the team owns the stadium, the teams will work with local elections officials to get the stadium set up as a polling place. If they cannot do that or missed a deadline, they will make efforts to use the property to help with local elections in some way, either voter registration or other means.

This is only one of several agreements between the NBA and the players aimed at advancing racial and social justice. The NBA has also agreed to establish a social justice coalition that will focus on a broad range of issues. Additionally, the NBA will work with broadcasters and advertisers to include segments during each game to promote civic engagement and social justice.

This agreement shows that the players and the NBA are committed to advancing racial equality and justice, making bold moves here, and it’s a truly awesome thing. And I hope it inspires more discussion and action in other sports leagues and indeed other industries.

Teams across the sports spectrum have made statements this week addressing the protests and racial unrest in the country. The WNBA protested their games in solidarity, Major League Baseball games have been postponed, even the National Hockey League–the whitest sports league for the whitest sport–have decided to postpone games for the weekend in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. That’s huge.

Just think what could be possible if these teams and leagues followed the NBA in their next steps and opened up their facilities to voters in November. Especially baseball stadiums, with their open-air setups, could be safer, more accessible voting locations for the most important election in history.

This is a big and really commendable move by the NBA, and it came thanks to players who would not sit idly by as injustice continues is America. Use whatever sports metaphor you like, a slam dunk or a home run or whatever the equivalent is for hockey; this decision is a winner and I hope it starts a trend.

Will they remove the BLM slogans from the basketball courts to comply with whaterver impartiality rules their given state has with regard to voting facilities?

The smart ones will. The rest are going to be challenged after the votes are in to try and influence or delay the election. Should be good for a larf.

Jesus christ. You mean a fucking goal? Maybe a hat trick?

The amount of soy oozing from that line alone should make this person ineligible to vote.

They should. They already lost half their audience for basketball games, so they need to repurpose those arenas into something else. Maybe after the election is gamed, they can turn the arenas into BLM flea markets or something.

At least we'll probably see fewer billion dollar contracts in the years ahead.

This is hilarious. Half of the sports arenas are a giant pain in the ass to get to and generally aren't surrounded by hoodrats. So, thanks for giving whitey another option on election day.

Black power!

Cool, sounds good to me. Be safe, wear a mask (if you want), and vote; just like Faucci and Birx said.

And it undermines the mail-in voting scam. For once, the NBA made an alright decision.

I won't shit on this virtue signaling, tax funded arenas should be used more. Although as others said, this will be far more inconvenient for 99% of people due to location, terrible parking, etc...

nothing bad about this, more polling stations means its safer to vote.

Maybe we could troll them by photoshopping the various BLM slogans photos and posters to replace it with "PLM" as a nod to that lousy guy Joseph Rosenbaum killed by Kyle Rittenhouse during the Kenosha riots. :smug:

How long before that decision will bite back the NBA?

I'm always suspicious of overtly leftists organizations want to get involved in polling or registering. What happens to a registration that went Republican? What happens at the end of the night when there are thousands of no-shows, and the doors close with thousands of blank ballots?

Every polling location that I've even gone to was a school in my neighborhood. What is the plan here, consolidate all those locations into one super polling location? Imagine having to go hours out of your way to vote in an environment as crowded and chaotic as a sports game or rock concert. If this gains any traction, there is zero chance that there wouldn't be absolute corruption and fraud.

Democracy via Basketball Americanism.

Yep. TOTALLY not electioneering.

The NBA is a sports league that sells a product, but it's so deluded it just refuses to believe it's NOT a political platform that sells a lifestyle

Every business is selling a lifestyle these days. It's how you keep customers coming back for more, especially things they don't need.

Hey NBA, if you paid me and my buddies that play pick up games at the park a quarter what you pay these dudes we could live comfortably and we don't give a shit about broadcasting our politics.

Think about it.

This is stupid. It doesn't actually do anything and doesn't do anything to help racial injustice and inequality. There isn't a single NBA arena that is in the hood. This is an excuse to make their temper tantrum look like it did something besides tanking their already -40% ratings even further.
