I installed kde on one of my OS's to try giving desktops another real chance.
So far. Honestly am not a huge fan. I'll keep using it to see if it grows on me a bit. The things of note coming from someone who has been using window managers for quite a while are:
1. this IS NOT less work than setting up a window manager in any meaningful sense. Instead of just editing a text file I'm having to navigate through a million arbitrary options in a settings app to try and get things set up, and like using one of the more maximal window managers there are a ton of little things that you need to work out that are specific to setting up this desktop. Coming from the opposite perspective of the person going to a window manager from a desktop, or windows. I feel like it's just a matter of familiarity that gives the illusion that one is somehow simpler than the other rather than it truly being the case. Because this definitely doesn't feel simpler to me.
2. I can create some of the things I like about my window manager setup. After I get that done it might feel a bit better to me. I do think it's going to be as much work if not more to get there than doing it on my own.
3. this one is a positive note. In some hard to describe way it does feel more cohesive than going through dwm, or another WM. Obviously mostly because a lot of the applications are provided as part of the DE, but even ones like firefox seem more at home like this. Now there are definitely exceptions to this. Like terminals. If you're using standalone terminals, they feel out of place, and some of the other minimal and scriptable applications I like using. Like zathura, or minimal web browsers. The window decorations don't go well with those at all. I might have to eventually set up window rules to stop kde from trying to decorate them. (which again is more work). As I said, I can't deny it does feel more complete. I'm not entirely sure that matters is the thing though. Mostly because the places my normal set up are incomplete are like that because I don't want/need it in my normal use.
All in all, so far it's fine. Like I said maybe it will grow on me over a little bit of time. I'm not sure though it's not like I was doing a lot of window manager hopping before this. I had a fairly static setup, that overall worked well for me, and still is.
