Generally it seems to me that Wayland is the working modern solution with x11 (now depreciated) is an older legacy option.
That's how it is if you have a modern use case (read: two or more montiors and/or HDR)

Now you can say it's a bad modern working solution and you'd be right but most of the argument is over people who don't like how it happened or don't like the change in philosophy between the two or just don't like change (we are all autists here after all)

Bro, Wayland fucking SUCKS with dual monitors. It's more like "If you have a single 4K monitor with HDR, it works. Otherwise, use at your own risk but also if you complain about anything out of scope, we'll NOTABUG/WONTFIX your complaint and also shame you like the smug, condescending pieces of shit we are."

Literally every time I've ever dabbled with Wayland in the past with my dual 1080p panels (and I've attempted it on bare metal in 2026 a few times on a portable hard disk), it would cause huge amounts of artifacting and minor glitching whereas the X11 session never once did so. And yes, I'm explicitly using "Wayland" as a catch-all to refer to Wayland the protocol and the compositor ecosystem that Wayland itself begets.

You literally need to permanently rely on XWayland for specific applications like video game emulators because trying to get Azahar (the 3DS emulator) to function correctly on Mutter, KWin, Sway, or Hyprland (among others) would result in huge artifacting and graphical glitching.

Pure native Wayland applications that work correctly across all compositors are next-to-impossible unless it's some stupidly ubiquitous FOSS program like Firefox or LibreOffice. Dude, MPV of all things would trigger the fucking artifacting on the monitor I had it set up in to watch locally stored media if I set mpv.conf to use VAAPI instead of relying on the damn software video renderer.

AND THESE ARE 1080P PANELS BOTH SET AT 60 FUCKING HERTZ. I HAVE AN AMD FUCKING GPU. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE LINUX'S BREAD AND BUTTER, IT ABSOLUTELY FUCKING IS ON X11, BUT APPARENTLY FUCKING NOT ON WAYLAND DESPITE ALL THE POSERS CLAIMING TO THE CONTRARY.

I don't give a fuck how extreme I sound right now: Wayland and its consequences were an unmitigated disaster for the Linux desktop ecosystem, the Xorg developers need to stop playing with Wayland and return to Xorg so that they can finally give us a proper, unified Xorg 7.8 that we never once received even though it was teased for 2013, and every single smug douchebag developer who NOTABUG or WONTFIXed legitimate complaints about the scope, architecture, or who's responsible for what need to be flogged, pilloried, tarred, feathered, and thrown into Boston Harbour.

I'm chasing down some crashes and it's driving me nuts.

AMD RX6800, runs fine and quiet but the whole system locks up often when I game. If I crank the fan curve off the automatic one to something loud as fuck it doesn't crash as much. I'm talking a full system lock up, all fans go full, GPU is lost, can't ssh in crash. The GPU never says it goes over 60c when crashing. Seems low.

Any advice? This was not a problem a year ago. Is the 7.x kernel shit?

Pretending x11 works perfectly out of the box with multiple monitors with different refresh rates and resolutions is disingenuous. Even when you do every trick in the book to get it working you still only get 90% of the level of multimonitor support wayland has. Yes it has multimonitor support, no its not good multimonitor support, its the bare minimum.

If you're running a lts distro it could be the bug I was getting a few months ago. This has the full chain of agony.

Artix released an update to the linux-firmware package today. Haven't had a full on crash yet, just soft one that put me back to the login screen and could have been anything since i was AFK. My luck is either amazing or amazingly shitty, but i'm happy to not have to use windows.

Needs more diagnostic information.
* OS
* Desktop environment/window manager
* X11 v. Wayland
* The specific games that fuck your shit up
* Did you flag PROTON_LOG=1 in your Steam launcher args for specific games in question?
* Does this happen exclusively with Steam? Heroic? Lutris? Independent launcher scripts you made?

It's not disingenuous for me because I don't have the luxury of differing refresh rates. Point well-taken though

My desktop decided to commit suicide last night. I've already gone though the usual diagnostic tests. At this point I think it is a PSU issue, otherwise if it's CPU or GPU or motherboard I'm gonna kill myself.

I've already ordered a replacement PSU it should be here in a few days. Hopefully that's the fix, elsewise I'm gonna slam my head into a wall.

… did you cheap out on the PSU? The PSU is the one component you should never cheap out on. As long as your PSU is rock solid everything else should last unless they have their own defects like a stupid gpu power connector.

It was a NZXT C1000 gold PSU. I've read some stuff and apparently they die after the first few years.

DISCLAIMER:
This was my first ever desktop.

After updating to Fedora 44 I have gotten the weird keyboard lagging after going on sleepmode I had with Mint before.
Also does anyone experience crashes when updating the drivers for the Nvidia T500 GPU or other Nvidia cards? I had to downgrade my drivers to not crash which is weird since the T500 should be supported for the foreseeable future.

i3 is x11, sway is wayland and is meant to be a replacement for i3. If you really want a twm just go for hyprland.
Technically I’m building a htpc interface that allows you to launch and switch apps using a remote. It’s based on i3/sway but I’m still a little uncertain of which to recommend if I’m offering it to others.

I’d rather use something that doesn’t require daily updating so I’m basing it on Debian and not arch.

Ah ok, hopefully it didn’t fry anything else on the way out.
Victims have said it fried their ssd and ram but it depends. After my computer died, I basically unplugged everything. I have a backup in the cloud but the local version is like a few days ahead and so it is annoying.

Then just use sway for HDR support.

Wayland being forced upon people despite not being a finished product is the issue.
That never stopped systemd either.

The unmitigated arrogance of these people just deciding "well, it's not even close to finished, but it's good enough, and we're in charge of enough shit somehow that fuck you, this is all you're getting now" is truly galling and until recently nobody's bothered putting their foot down to push back, which I hate. I understand it (it's hard, thankless work, since every ungrateful faggot you'd be saving from the hell of systemd will spend every second of any wrinkles in their transition away from it to your alternative bitching about you, your incompetence and your alternative), but I still hate it.
