Every damn fucking game I play, it seems that I will nearly always run into someone with a really gay deep lisp with the name "Lain" or some version of it. This is not an exaggeration. I've never seen any other anime characters do this. The only analogue to this I can think of would be brony shit where people would change their gamertags to one of the ponies.

They all have the same voice and talk about the same nonsense. They all have the same lain avatar. They don't name themselves "lain enjoyer" or anything like that, it's like it's their version of a fursona.

Why is this?

IMO while the autist/trans thing is a big part of it, you also have to be kinda narcissistic or pretentious to like this show. When I watched Lain I thought the surrealist parts had the veneer of cool, but really just served to make it seem more complicated and deep than it really was. Also making Lain a god at the end for no reason was retarded.
It's a good (see: the only good) anime and it broke the brains of some kids in the early 2000s.

Oh and a bunch of disgusting pedos are attracted to Lain, that probably accounts for a lot of those people.

Most people I've met with bad lisp are usually pseudo intellectual pretentious faggots so it would make sense they like lain to much.
Lain just attracts those morons who feel smart for watching an easily assessable TV that you have to be an idiot to misunderstand.

The answer is autism. Autistic, terminally-online troons see a young girl who acts very autistic and turns out to be some kind of online goddess and think "this is literally me".

It's because of what the character represented. Unfortunately, they kinda missed the point.

the character Lain is an anthropomorphisation of the internet, and eventually the Internet itself. The "experiments" of Serial Experiments Lain are thought experiments, imagining the Internet as a human, interacting in different scenarios as the Internet becomes more prevalent in everyone's lives.
Because of this, while it makes sense thematically for someone to use Lain as an avatar in the sense that anyone interacting with the Internet is 'interacting with Lain', they are still just a human, and transhumanism is a foolish dream in our reality of embodied consciousnesses. If you want to imagine the Internet as an emergent consciousness made up of the collective sum of humanity's uploaded thoughts etc, then Lain is everyone, and no-one is Lain - and if you believe that, you must therefore believe Lain is a total fucking schizo.

Basically they're people who think they understand the series but don't really understand it. Especially what the series gets wrong.
