See this is what gets me about India. After the British left they had the perfect opportunity to build their ideal nation. They had reasonably built infrastructure, a slightly outdated but functional military, a solid industrial base, and had a template for a national healthcare system as the UK developed the NHS. The Indian National Congress had control of the central government for something like 50 years uninterrupted, which is honestly kind of unprecedented in democratic societies, but they squandered that control for much of that time and let India decline while trying to play both sides of the Cold War up until they were voted out in the 90s. The BJP, a Hindu nationalist party, that took power after the INC was voted out, is really the root cause of India being the rape infested shithole it is now because they undid pretty much all the societal advances that the INC wanted to push through. The BJP are the stereotypical religious zealots that do the, "absolutely everything must be according to the terms of my religion or we will murder you" kind of thing that you usually see from Islamic fundamentalists.

It also cannot be overstated how much the death of Indira Gandhi set back women in India. She was very much the Iron Lady of India to a point that there's a giant chunk of iron ore at her grave.

It really puts things into perspective, doesn't it? As a Huezilian, I do not live in a place that's known for its human development and quality of life; while it's not all favelas (despite the left's romanticization and promotion of ghetto culture) and impenetrable jungle, it still has a long way to go before being a decent place to live. And yet, if I ran into something like this anywhere in the country, I'd immediately assume I'm entering some poor-to-lower-middle-class neighborhood or, at the very least, a very old and neglected district. My parents are solid middle class after a lifetime of hard work, and their home, old as it may be, looks miles better than anything in this picture.

African farmers put beehives on ropes as a fence around their crops, so when a wild animal comes to eat the crops, it shakes the beehives and all the bees come out to chase it away. They don't have to be micromanaging the wildlife.

The caste system was banned in 1950 but total enforcement of that ban on 1.4 billion people is impossible without going full Stasi. AFAIK arranged marriage is also banned but, again, it's impossible to police proactively.

OAKLAND, Calif. (Reuters) - California regulators sued Cisco Systems Inc on Tuesday, accusing it of discriminating against an Indian-American employee and allowing him to be harassed by two managers because he was from a lower Indian caste than them.
U.S. employment law does not specifically bar caste-based discrimination, but California's Department of Fair Employment and Housing contends in the lawsuit that the Hindu faith's lingering caste system is based on protected classes such as religion.
The lawsuit, filed in federal court in San Jose, does not name the alleged victim. It states he has been a principal engineer at Cisco's San Jose headquarters since October 2015 and that he was born at the bottom of caste hierarchy as a Dalit, once called "untouchables."
Like other large Silicon Valley employers, Cisco's workforce includes thousands of Indian immigrants, most of whom were born Brahmins or other high castes.
Former Cisco engineering managers Sundar Iyer and Ramana Kompella also are defendants in the lawsuit, which accuses them of harassment for internally enforcing the caste hierarchy.
Cisco spokeswoman Robyn Blum said the network gear maker followed its process to investigate employee concerns in this case and would "vigorously defend itself" against the lawsuit.
"Cisco is committed to an inclusive workplace for all," she said. "We were fully in compliance with all laws as well as our own policies."
Iyer and Kompella did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It was not immediately known if the two have retained attorneys.
The civil rights group Equality Labs in a 2018 report cited in the lawsuit found that 67% of Dalits surveyed felt treated unfairly at their U.S. workplaces.
At Cisco, the unnamed employee reported Iyer to human resources in November 2016 for outing him as a Dalit to colleagues. Iyer allegedly retaliated, but Cisco determined caste discrimination was not illegal and issues continued through 2018, the lawsuit states.

Cisco reassigned and isolated the employee, rejected a raise and opportunities that would have led to one and denied two promotions, according to the lawsuit.
Hindus traditionally grouped people into four major castes based on ancestry, and Dalits in India still struggle with access to education and jobs 65 years after India banned caste-based discrimination.

India was in one of the best situations for a country to have been in after World War 2. Fine, India did go through some famines such as the Bengal famine (a lot of it happened because of Japan invading Burma and there being an "oh shit" movement). Which, was primarily centred about Bengal.

However, it also had a large population with a strong government and strong bureaucracy with the Indian Civil Service. They'd have been able to get a lot done.

Now, what hurdle did India have when gaining independence? The partition of India, which was primarily a problem that was caused by the peoples of Pakistan and India, it was because Pakistan didn't want to be in a Hindu majority nation, But, this was not on the scope of civil war in say China.

Which all of this basically goes hand in hand with why India dislikes China so much. Look at China in World War 2? A shit ton of their country was under Japanese occupation, it suffered famine all over, on a scope far exceeding India. Wars in China always kill millions, and considering China ended up in a civil war before the end of the Second World War (well they had also been involved in a civil war of sorts before it, and had been in near constant conflict for a long time before then with the fall of the Qing, and all the wars leading into that). China was in ruin, yet they managed to build back and have significantly overtook India, who were under British rule where the British didn't really care all that much for India, and was pretty lax on the subcontinent because Britain didn't really want an Empire. (very expensive, meant having to build even more ships which by the 20th century it was becoming even more overstretched as more navies built up and Britain could no longer maintain their trade empire dominance).

India was the only major part of the British Empire that actually yielded them a real profit. Everything else existed for bases or for a specific resource. It was almost as though the empire existed to funnel resources from India to Britain. Rails were setup to extract resources and bureaucracy designed around taxing people instead of providing services. Taxation on salt was so profitable that the British planted a giant hedge along the entirety of India to prevent large-scale salt smuggling

They didn't inherit much industry. The British de-industrialized India and made them dependent on being part of the British system for basics such as textiles and basic goods. Gandhi's original flag proposed for India was a spinning wheel because he wanted it to represent Indians making things for themselves. India's agriculture was also a mess. They grew export crops, and western grains for export that were not suited for India's soil. They relied on imported rice from the rest of the British Empire. The Japanese occupying Burma and Malaya caused a famine in India because rice from these areas was what fed most of the region.

The strange thing about India is that their leaders have generally been competent, but the country is just so comically fucked that its just never enough. The Indian National Congress won votes because they were the party that won India its freedom, but they were also elitist top-down reformers that tried to crack down on casteism, sexism, and enforce a strange utopian socialism inspired by Robert Owen and the British Labour party. Even before the Green Revolution India stopped having famines because of their economic restructuring. People like Nehru and Indira Gandhi actually did try to drag their country kicking and screaming into modernity - they failed.
