‘Magical’ galaxy frogs disappear after reports of photographers destroying their habitats​

A group of endangered “galaxy frogs” are missing, presumed dead, after trespassing photographers reportedly destroyed their microhabitats for photos.

Melanobatrachus indicus, each the size of a fingertip, is the only species in its family, and lives under logs in the lush rainforest in Kerala, India. Their miraculous spots do not indicate poison, as people sometimes assume, but are thought to be used as a mode of communication, according to Rajkumar K P, a Zoological Society of London fellow and researcher.


In early 2020, he found seven members of the “magical” species in the Western Ghats rainforest in India, but could not visit them during the Covid pandemic. When he went back later, the frogs had disappeared, according to a report from the ZSL.

“The big beautiful fallen log that was there was completely broken and misplaced,” Rajkumar said. The vegetation was also trampled, and the frogs, whose homes had been destroyed, were nowhere to be found.

At first he suspected brown mongooses of causing the damage, but they are not strong enough to overturn a log. Then he asked his tracker if he had seen anyone.

“He mentioned there were a couple of photographers visiting that location. Several small groups. So later I contacted my other trackers, and they started telling me everything that had happened.”

These nature photographers had been turning over logs in their search for the endangered species, according to the trackers. When they found them, they would capture and prop up the frogs for photos. But they didn’t wear gloves, even though these delicate creatures breathe through their skin and are incredibly sensitive.

One tracker told Rajkumar that two small galaxy frogs had died after being handled for too long by photographers.

“He said they would take the animal to some nice background or mossy log to take the photograph, relocating it from one place to another to get better photos. On that day they got five or six frogs and two of them died.”

Searching again and again at the site in the following months, Rajkumar could not find any more galaxy frogs. He felt “helpless” in the face of the injustice.

“The forest department officers try to prevent these kinds of groups coming. But they use higher officials – politicians, high court judges, or something like that – to allow them to take photographs,” he said.

“I fell in love with these frogs after seeing them. You feel like they’re jet black in colour, but when you put them under light you can find all the stars – like galaxies on their bodies. It’s just magical.”

Dr Benjamin Tapley, ZSL’s curator of reptiles and amphibians, said the galaxy frogs are likely an “ancient”, “irreplaceable” branch on the tree of life.

“I grimace every time I see a photo come up on my feed of a galaxy frog,” said Tapley. “I just wonder what happened? How was that taken? How was the habitat impacted?

“We’re really hopeful that we can encourage people to act more ethically so that incredible species like the galaxy frog can continue to thrive for millions more years.”

I think this is the problem, Indians are extremely insular. I knew some who lived in my neighborhood and never conversed with neighbors, effectively being sheltered other than sending their kids to school to be free for a couple hours.
A lot of British sociology in the 80s talked about Pakistani families in the same way, basically questioning their desire to stay in the country as many interviewees (like fathers of families, since they often were the only ones who knew english) claimed they would only work and then return home, scorning British values like co-ed schools and universities.

This kind of scholarship is awkward nowadays. In the US at least we don't study things like this from a western-focused perspective because of racism, even though there are valid questions to ask. Like, is it really justified to not allow women to learn English or even participate in American society due to paternal abuse? Women who flee Afghanistan to escape the Taliban just to be told to tolerate sharia law in the UK?
It's hugely insular. We don't poke into it in the US atleast because we didn't question the Chinese or Italian enclaves, so it seems biased. Brits don't poke into Islam or Hinduism because the Anglican church is so strong, why shouldn't other religions have a say? I truly don't know what the end of this will be, especially since second gen onward tend to assimilate regardless (or otherwise leave the country due to religion/family/etc)

We did actually poke into the enclaves in the US. A huge chunk of American social work in the old days was getting ethnic kids out of their enclaves and into wider society so they could integrate. The settlement house movement was all about plopping boarding homes full of educated white protestants in the middle of these kinds of communities to regularly interact with the locals and speed along Americanization.

I can't help but think he's name dropping Marco Rubio and Bernie Moreno specifically since they are children of immigrants that the public actually likes, and Vivek hopes to spark some kind of positive association with his name and theirs. Like how he referenced people calling Usha Vance a jeet in his speech the other day.

Between the reactions to his Christmas meltdown last year and the lackluster enthusiasm for his campaign, I think Vivek is somewhat aware of how much he is disliked by the general public. If that's the case, and he wants to run for office and rule over us anyways, it's a chilling thought, really.

"Christian" is debatable because they specifically said the government should not favor any religion, and many of the founders (most notably Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine) were openly non-Christian and believed some variety of Deism. But America being intended as a "white" country is not even debatable, the Immigration Act of 1790 makes that quite clear. There is also this Ben Franklin quote that is (or used to be) frequently posted on 4chan
Which leads me to add one Remark: That the Number of purely white People in the World is proportionally very small. All Africa is black or tawny. Asia chiefly tawny. America (exclusive of the new Comers) wholly so. And in Europe, the Spaniards, Italians, French, Russians and Swedes, are generally of what we call a swarthy Complexion; as are the Germans also, the Saxons only excepted, who with the English, make the principal Body of White People on the Face of the Earth. Not only were the founders not particularly attached to Christianity, they were so racist they didn't even consider half of Europe to be "White". The fact that the modern right has retconned the Founders into being race-blind Christians just like themselves is one reason I can't take them seriously. The leftist characterization of the founders being non-religious pot smokers/evil yucky racists (depending on what they are arguing for) is ironically more accurate even though it's often not in good faith.

They hope the muslim migrants follow the same path as other communities did. They spend a few generations stuck in their old ways, but slowly they dilute into the general populace and more and more of their offspring leech into larger society.
I think the difference between western migrants and asian/middle eastern migrants is how clannish/tribal they are. They shield their women from society and only let them move around their enclave. They also never learn the language of the country. Anywhere outside their enclave they have a male chaperone to keep tabs. Their men are allowed to fuck western women, but they must marry a proper ethnic girl. Either imported from their home country, or cousin from their diaspora. That they don't marry western women also reinforces the system. Western women are whores you are allowed to pump and dump, but not marry, only your own women that cover their hair are pure enough. The few with white heat have to force the western woman to convert and become subservient. The handmaidens that are willing to do that, also end up as the strongest supporters and therefore don't disrupt the tribe.

The founding fathers were afraid of a 30 years war level of conflict. A civil war in which both sides were willing to fight till utter exhaustion for the sake of their faith. They knew that letting religion into their government (or governmental spirit) would be a casus belli for religious fanatics to start shit. If they picked the Anglican church they would be stuck with the king of England as their religious head. If they picked some puritan strain they would have friction between the newfoundland puritans, Anglicans and Lutherans (Swedes) as well as the south. You also would create tension between Catholics and Protestants. Most were not Catholic, but people from the Spanish colonies (like Florida) were.
Their stance was "please leave your Christian autism at the door, we want to be a peaceful country not burdened by Old World conflict".

Fwiw data centers employ very few people. The large amount of indians in Ohio is from companies like Infosys that American companies outsourced software too. They then L-1 transfer Indians over.

Wipro, Infosys, Tata, Cognizant, and HCL are honestly like 80% of the problem just on their own. They basically collude to bump up the odds of individual candidates to get visas (all five will submit an entry for one guy to ensure his odds are maximized) and sell American companies on a docile employee they don't have to offer raises for and who will happily work in their open floor office wage cages.

These companies are also why we shouldn't just be talking about remittances as the only incentive for the Indian government to keep pushing these programs. WITCH is probably 5-7% of India's GDP as well, and a massive amount of powerful people in the country also own stock in these companies.
