Dowries are a big thing all over the world especially in the east. Western Europe and Anglosphere dropped them but those aren't exactly rich cultures. All of the east does it. Japan, China, Italy, Greece etc.

Islamic cultures do also but in that case the bride to be can request a dowry from the husband and in some cases its an outrageous/demeaning sum from the man. This is a big debate on the Muslim world, regarding the decency of asking the man who wants to marry you for a Mercedes G Wagon and a penthouse in Dubai.

These aren't just "menial jobs" these are SMEs with easy six figure turnovers.
Enterprises like this are normally a venue of social mobility and a source from where local upper classes form.
Jeets (and similar migrants) on the other hand use these for various things like a) visa fraud e.g. by chain selling the enterprise for entrepreuneur visas and general work visas for staff and welfare fraud via deliberate underpaying of staff who go on public assistance. They also compete with the natives on unequal terms due to special loans and subsidies for "minority entrepreneurship" and by just outright shitting on local labor laws/safety and hygiene requirements etc.

Shit like this is just as insidious as importing "qualified" immigrants to force native knowledge workers to compete for a limited amount of white collar jobs.

I know about dowries because I like learning about history, especially topics that relate to women in general. Dowries are not India only like you're implying but happen all across Asia. The example I was thinking of as I wrote my post was from the book "Japanese Girls and Women" by Alice Mabel Bacon where she described that the bride would bring cloth, thread, and sewing needles as part of her trousseau (and if divorced, she kept her stuff!).
It doesn't take being Indian to know women bring home goods with them when they marry.

It's just historical knowledge for Europe and just general cultural knowledge. I know a lot of weird-ass things about other cultures, doesn't mean I belong to them. I know there are some rainforest tribes that practice insane manhood rituals, like wearing bullet ant gloves, or tying a rope to your legs and jumping off a tower trying to estimate the rope length just so you barely don't hit the ground. In Germany the dowry is called "Mitgift" or "Aussteuer" and was still somewhat common up until the 20th century. It was generally expected that a bride would have collected a bunch of things to bring into the marriage, like high quality cloths and porcellain and cutlery. Similarly the groom was also expected to bring a certain wealth into the marriage, also as a security if the groom dies and the wife becomes a widow. Often it was a bit of an early inheritance, and it's still quite common for bride and groom to get "the good porcellain" or the silver cutlery for their wedding from their families, often inherited throughout generations.
Oddly enough, in ancient times in the germanic tribes it was mainly the man who had to pay, particularly a cow, a horse, a shield, a spear and a sword, although the bride's family would also bring something to the table.
