So now there are endless miles of railroad trackage that is unusable. It's rusted and warped, bent rails laying in sinkholes, whole sections of track where the rails and ties have been pried up to be used to build some scrap shack. Prime movers and rolling stock sit in abandoned rail yards rusting away, the motors seized, scrappers picking at their massive corpses for who-knows-what.

Much of the railroad track in the USA was laid in the 19th century. Especially the rural areas. Yet nearly all of it still works. I have a relative who works for the railroad doing this. He's a complete retard but a hard working blue collar type. His job for the past decade has been to inspect and repair track across the remote areas of the Pacific Northwest. Replacing unserviceable pieces, piece of rail, nails, and so on. Now you must consider that across the US there are people like him doing exactly this. In every single state. Day in and day out. Every single day for going on two centuries now since the railways became a thing.

BUTLER COUNTY, IOWA – Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Ranking Member Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) are scrutinizing major corporations for filing thousands of H-1B skilled labor visa petitions after conducting mass layoffs of American employees.

“In evaluating the high unemployment rate for American tech workers, we cannot ignore the massive, ongoing layoffs ordered by you and your peers in Big Tech C-suites over the past few years … At the same time you have been laying off your employees, you have been filing H-1B visa petitions for [thousands of] foreign workers,” Grassley and Durbin wrote in letters to 10 major employers in the United States.

“With all of the homegrown American talent relegated to the sidelines, we find it hard to believe that [you] cannot find qualified American tech workers to fill these positions,” the lawmakers concluded.

Grassley and Durbin are requesting information and data from each company regarding their recruitment and hiring practices, as well as any variation in salary and benefits between H-1B visa holders and American employees.

The senators' inquiry comes at a time when the unemployment rate in America’s tech sector is “well above” the overall jobless rate. According to the Federal Reserve, recent American graduates with STEM degrees now face higher unemployment rates than the general population.

Grassley and Durbin are longtime partners on H-1B visa reform and the lead authors of the H-1B and L-1 Visa Reform Act.

The senators wrote to the following companies, including two which have been, or are currently under investigation for discriminatory H-1B hiring and firing practices:

• Amazon, which laid off tens-of-thousands of employees in recent years, blaming the adoption of generative AI tools.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Amazon applied for and received approval to hire 10,044 foreign H-1B employees.
• Apple, which made at least four rounds of workforce reductions in 2024, laying off hundreds of workers.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Apple applied for and received approval to hire 4,202 foreign H-1B employees.
• Cognizant Technology Solutions, which laid off thousands of workers, including employees in the United States.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Cognizant applied for and received approval to hire 2,493 foreign H-1B employees. In 2024, a federal jury concluded Cognizant favored South Asian H1-B visa holders over American employees, which warranted punitive damages.
• Deloitte, which laid off over a thousand employees in recent years.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Deloitte applied for and received approval to hire 2,353 foreign H-1B employees. In 2024, a Journal of Business Ethics study found Deloitte pays H1-B visa holders 10 percent less than American citizens.
• Google, which laid off tens-of-thousands of employees in recent years – including hundreds of workers in its platform and device unit, and 35 percent of its small team managers – despite enjoying records profits.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Google applied for and received approval to hire 4,181 foreign H1-B employees.
• JPMorgan Chase, which announced this year that it would conduct multiple rounds of layoffs affecting up to a thousand workers, despite enjoying record profits. Last month JPMorgan Chase laid off around 100 employees in its San Francisco office alone, despite reporting $15 billion in second quarter profits.
  • In fiscal year 2025, JPMorgan Chase applied for and received approval to hire 2,440 foreign H-1B employees.
• Meta, which laid off a quarter of its workforce between 2022 and 2023 and labeled it a “year of efficiency.” In 2025, Meta laid off 3,600 employees, overshooting its stated goal of laying off another five percent of its workforce.
  • In fiscal year 2025, Meta applied for and received approval to hire 5,123 foreign H-1B employees.
• Microsoft, which laid off 16,000 employees this year alone, despite record revenue and profits. Amid criticism for mass-layoffs, Microsoft characterized its actions as an “enigma of success.”
  • In fiscal year 2025, Microsoft applied for and received approval to hire 5,189 foreign H1-B employees.
• Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which recently announced plans to lay off over 12,000 employees, including American staff.

I always thought the Designated Shitting Street thing was a joke, but I'm genuinely not surprised that it is based in fact. Which begs the question: how do you tell a designated shitting street from a regular street in India? Are there little poop symbols on the streets that are meant for use as toilets? Is it in the name of the street? Or does it really not matter, and any street can be a designated shitting street when the need arises?

It's not designated by the government or local authority, it's just sort of community consensus, where everyone goes to shit.

There's a very interesting approach developed by Unicef called Community-Lead Total Sanitation (PDF, this one's about Sierra Leone). Basically, you go to a village and pretend you're just there to learn about the village, what health issues impact it and if you can help at all - but very specifically do not tell them you're there to try and get them to stop defecating everywhere. Once you've built up a relationship, the next stage is triggering them - that's legitimately the term. The first step is drawing a map of the village and then asking them all where they go to the toilet, just as part of "understanding the structure of the village".

It's helpful at this point to find out whatever rude word they use for faeces, and save it for later. Then you ask people near where the community tends to defecate how they feel about people defecating outside their house, and same thing for the holy buildings ("oh, how do you feel that worshippers might accidentally track poop into the holy building"). Then you pretend that you don't believe anyone would actually be defecating like this, and the villagers must be making fun of you so you're going to leave, to goad them into showing you the open defecation grounds on what's termed a "walk of shame".

Pretend to be shocked when you're shown the grounds and there's piles of faeces everywhere, asking who did it (most people will be ashamed and not own up to it). While you're there, sneak some faeces into a plastic bag. Then go back to the main village square and talk about it. Produce the faeces from the bag and say "oh I just found this lying around", and put it down next to some food. Let them see flies buzzing between the shit and the food, and then ask them if they'd like the food - and when they say no, ask why (because the flies from the shit got on it). Then start asking them "What do you guys think about shit? Do you think shit is edible? Have you guys ever seen anyone eating shit? I heard people eat shit sometimes". Do not tell them that they've been eating shit, let them come to that conclusion themselves. Then bring up diseases. You do the same thing with a bottle of water to clean off some shit you accidentally stepped in and ask if anyone wants the water, and then ask what happens to all the shit when it rains, and then ask about diseases again. Plus you leverage shame in other areas, like asking the chieftan "oh what happens when you have a special visitor? You tell them to go in the bushes and eat and drink shit and get shit illnesses? That must be so embarrassing for you, having to undermine your wonderful hospitality".

Eventually when you make them feel embarrassed and ashamed enough, you mention you can help with sorting out latrines, and if they accept you add in things like "oh the poor people can't afford latrines? That's a shame, then you'll still be eating and drinking shit and getting sick, since they'll still be shitting all over the place". And if they go ahead, you can give them a special "open defecation free" award and throw a party, then go onto the next village and repeat again, adding in "oh that other village doesn't do open defecation! I didn't realise anyone still did that. I'd have thought such a nice village would be more advanced than the other one, I hope you don't all feel terribly embarassed that your neighbours are so hygienic". The whole point is leveraging feelings of shame, embarrassment and disgust to get the community itself to recognise that it's disgusting and hazardous to health while tricking them into thinking they just came to this conclusion themselves and they weren't lectured into it by an interloper.

Studies seem to indicate a success rate of 75-85% in targeted parts of Africa (Zambia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone). Bangladesh and India seem to show significantly higher rates (this practice was pioneered in Bangladesh) based on official estimates, with some districts declaring they're 100% poo free including across all rural areas. However the real figures appear to be much lower, and I'll speculate it's for the following reasons:

• General lack of shame/weird sense of pride in shitting openly and expecting Dalits to clean it up
• Lack of disgust about eating shit, because "Vedic" products encourage literally eating cow shit
• Lying about stopping shitting everywhere so you can win the shit-free award and brag about it, but carrying on shitting in secret anyway
• Blaming any shit fund on the Dalits
• Using any support with latrines/toilets as leverage for gibs, then using the constructed buildings as storage sheds
• Hygiene rituals mean they think they're cargo-culting clean living
• They get sick all the time anyway

This is a fascinating rundown, thank you. On one hand, I applaud the people who volunteer their time like this. On the other, I have to wonder about the use of attempting to help people who haven't realized for 10,000 years that you don't shit in the open and just leave it there.

A second highway construction zone worker has died in a crash on successive days this week in the Twin Cities, this time in the north metro.

The latest incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday on eastbound Hwy. 610 at Noble Parkway in Maple Grove, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

A contract worker in a a city of Maple Grove work zone was on foot when he was struck by a dump truck going in reverse, the patrol said. Emergency responders declared the man dead at the scene.

After they'd give me a long answer I'd just stare at them for 10 seconds then write something down. I also asked retarded questions like If you were a fruit which fruit would you be?

The truth is 5 years ago I was completely ambivalent towards Jeets, but over the years my country has become unrecognizable and I've seen them literally shit on beaches, drive like absolutely fucking morons, take high paying tech jobs from canadian citizens, mean mug white people even though THEY moved to the country that's filled with white people, and sexually harass women at clubs and bars (my gf being one of them that was harassed). Well, yes and no. There is a LOT of trackage that is no longer in use in the US because we no longer rely on rail service as much as we once did due to the advent of air travel and the interstate highway system. We used to rely on rail for pretty much all long distance travel for both passengers and cargo. That's not the case any longer. So a lot of the rail that used to link more rural areas is no longer in use. The rails tend to go from regional hub to regional hub, and then trucks take the cargo from those hubs to the rural areas. But yes, the rail lines that we still do have trace their origin to the 19th century and a lot of the lines are running over those same routes, while newer ones were also built to cut down time as engineering improved and we were able to cut through areas that we weren't able to back then.
