Kinda cool they got the Advent Children cast back it sounds like. As bad as that movie was, it was still mindless fun.

And hey, the gameplay kinda reminds of XIII. Despite not liking the story in that one, the gameplay was decent, so I'm okay with this.

Worse case scenario, we still have the original version.

They’re a thing in other neighboring Asian countries. They just change their names if they have a Japanese name. Still not sure what China thinks.

I've got a huge amount of nostalgia for Final Fantasy VII and consider it one of my favorite FF games and one of my favorite games in general.

That being said I've got some mixed feelings about the trailer. I think Aries looks great, so do Biggs, Wedge and Jessie. I'm not blown away by the voice acting. It's not terrible but not great... I'm not really that happy with how they've designed Cloud either. He does look a touch effeminate like he did in Advent Children (which I wasn't really a fan of).

I don't know how to feel about them making it an action RPG. I do like action RPGs, and I understand why they did it. They want to appeal to a wider audience and turn-based RPGs may seem kinda dated (although I still love them).

It's like in Final Fantasy Crisis Core, I wish they hadn't fucked with the battle system and that instead they gave us something closer to VII, although Crisis Core is a decent game not nearly as good as VII in my opinion, but I'm getting sidetracked.

It was a very short trailer though and I do think the game has a lot of potential. I just hope they're able to give the game as much personality as the original game and make the areas and houses feel as "lived in" as they did in VII.

That being said we're dealing with modern day Square Enix and not good ol' 90s Squaresoft so I don't know. Either way I'm going to play it.

An interesting point brought up in the video - Will they have the balls to include the Honeybee inn?

It's very unlikely. FF3 and 4 were remade in 3D but 5 and 6 got very ugly mobile ports. They will most likely just port these mobile ports to various other systems. The main reason we most likely got these mobile ports is because they lost the original source codes.

FF9 did get a full on remake/engine recreation due to losing the source code but that was already in 3D and was well known for its chibi 3D art style. So recreating the entire game in Unity was the only way to do it.

I don't think they ever planned to follow up VI's story. Especially considering how it ends in a somewhat conclusive way with very few story threads left hanging. (Then again so does FF7 and that got a few canonical story sequels). VII was planned as far back as 1994 on the Super Nintendo and was originally supposed to use a Donkey Kong Country graphical style.

The use of FF6 characters here is only coincidental, they were just placeholders while they were developing the game engine. A lot of the ideas that were initially planned for FF7 were used for Chrono Trigger instead.

Final Fantasy 6's characters were later used for a 3D tech demo in Final Fantasy 7's graphical style but this was entirely just a tech demo done to show off the technology similar to the screenshot above.
Square very infamously would distance themselves entirely from Nintendo and switched to Sony's Playstation which was a very public embarassment for Nintendo. They did it because of the severe storage limitations of the N64's cartridges.

Oh no they made the tough black guy from the 90s sound like other tough black guys from the 90s. I do appropriate them adding their own bits of racism too with shit like Yes Lawd and Hallelujah to article.

I wouldn't mind if his character was dialed back a little bit after sector 7 is destroyed and the cracks in his confidence appear. I'd also like him to lose his shades at that point too.

So much so that Nintendo basically refused to release any RPGs for the N64 (unless you count Paper Mario, a couple of real-time tactical RPGs and the god awful Quest 64). Considering what an RPG powerhouse the SNES was this was a huge letdown and a baffling choice.

I remember reading the president of Nintendo was so bitter about Squaresoft going to Sony that he said RPG fans were a bunch of losers that played their games alone in their dark bedrooms, or something to that effect, implying he didn't want to market to them.

As for the new Final Fantasy VII remake trailer, it's quite disappointing that they only show Midgar. I admit I'm curious to see how they handle all the other locations. I fear the game going for too drab, dark, bland and serious a design/tone, because although the original VII was dark and serious it had plenty of light-hearted, goofy moments as well which made it very endearing.

I spent a good amount of time watching reaction videos to the trailer yesterday and another point was brought up. They said ages ago that the remake would be episodic, so you'd have to buy one game just for a certain segment of the game.

Not sure if this is still the case as they could have changed their minds, but if that's so, then maybe this first episode of the remake will just be Midgar. That would suck since the pre-orders for the game are $60, and have been available to pre-order for what, like 4 years now or something? Just for a segment of the game?

Anyway, I think FFVII is the only FF that is loved by many people to desire for a remake. And I can understand why. Of all the FF I have played, FFVII is the only one that felt genuine. Or I think, the only FF that unfold its story like a normal story. Other FFs, specially FFVI, played more or less like a stage opera.

And when I think about it, FFVII is the first FF that used 3D polygons, so the characters emote more than just looking into the limited sprite emotions in the character spritesheet and reading the text. Your imagination does the work for you imagining what Cloud's personality is like, by his 3D popeye arms flicking it through his hair, saying, lets mosey.

So, yeah, it was the best FF yet and everytime they try to one-up on it, or copy it ends up flat on its face.

Oh, also something from the grapevine....
the Namco president and Yamauchi was apparently good friends and Namco was given preferential treatment in Nintendo.
until Namco decided to buy Atari and start Tengen to get past that Nes blocking chip....
after all that hulabaloo, at a party (which was near the super famicom launch), the Namco president and Yamauchi meet, and Yamauchi told the Namco president that they are not friends anymore and they will stand in line like every other company.
