Why do people want FF9 to be remade letalone Chrono Trigger after seeing what happer with FF7?
I think aesthetic-wise FF9 is one of the best Final Fantasies, if only because it decided to break away from looking like an edgy anime and make everything look like a whimsical story book. I don't know how well the toy-like designs would hold up with Squenix's modern design ethos. There's a diorama logic that is lost when you render everything realistically like we do now.

Not to mention, Squenix seems straight up allergic to returning to the classic turn based formula, it has a lot of flaws but it still worked for a reason. If anything a remake would at least give them an opportunity to fix the trance system. It sucked. "Oh cool I got my limit break except the enemy has one hit left and it's not even my turn"

Zack was the weakest element of rebirth
This might be controversial but Zack is easily the most overhyped character in this franchise. The easy money would be saying Tifa but Tifa’s actually a good character who is important to a good subplot, so she’s just a lot more popular than everyone else. But Zack? Even in his game he was sort of a bad hero who waited for things to happen which force his hand rather than act on his own accord.

Cloud, for example, does not have this problem.

Did you see the end of Crisis Core? He went to go face SOLDIER on his own, nothing forced his hand, he could've just escaped.

I think that's still one of the best scenes in any Final Fantasy game.

I think it’s obvious he could not have escaped and would only delay things while putting others at risk.

But even if it wasn’t it’s sort of a weak example. Obviously it being at the end cements my point— he’s bound by prequelitis and cannot act in a way that might change anything (that we don’t already expect, so when he inevitably helps Cloud fight Sephiroth you can’t claim that’s anything more than obligatory).

Again, compared to Cloud who makes quixotic decisions like attacking Shinra at their headquarters. Way more exciting than Crisis Core’s final cutscene. Waiting an entire game for that payoff when the original game’s hero had a far more compelling story that let him do such things in the narrative itself… is not as good.

Zack when you break it down is one of my favorite FF heroes because he's not a rebel, he's not a rabble rouser. He's a nice guy who's not thinking about the big picture and does his job. He wants to be a hero, he helps people whenever he can, but when you think about it he's a good example of a noble solider in an evil empire. Shinra pays him, they maintain order and he lives a good life putting down their messes. It's only when they take away everything from him, that he becomes a true hero and puts the safety of his friend above his happiness. The whole game is building up to the final scene and in that respect It works well

I will say Zack's character took a hit with the new voice actor. He's not bad, but I think in crisis core they over emphasized his rookie nature. He's better in rebirth but he lacks some spark in a fight.

Rick Gomez kicked so much ass and really made Zack feel lively.

Oh he absolutely could have escaped. The entire reason he can't is cloud. There's a scene where he picks a shitty motorbike over a race cycle because it has a passenger seat for cloud.

Zack did the noble thing of sacrificing his chances of success to take care of him. He was running on empty towards the end from the constant fights he was getting into to clear the way for cloud. If he had a decent night's sleep and a good meal there's a good chance he could have wiped the floor with that army.

If unconscious Cloud could get away safely then the guy who went to face the endless wave of enemies could've escaped imo, fighting whoever might've managed to catch up. He didn't kill them all, so they just left I guess. If they killed Could instead Zack probably wouldn't have been chased either, right?

I agree, it doesn't really seem like he had no choice. That wouldn't make the ending hit so hard either, him sacrificing himself for Cloud only means something if it's a choice.

I really hope they don't make us play Zack's last stand in the third part of FF7, because it would make Crisis Core pointless.

Like the whole appeal of Crisis Core is to get this look into how Soldier actually operates and the admittedly sad story behind the guy Cloud bases his life on. I don't even like Crisis Core that much but I will admit that it makes Final Fantasy 7 feel like a real world with a history, knowing that a single side character could get a fully fleshed out story like that.

And the Price of Freedom, that song.... (:_(

It’s a fanbase that can’t admit the obvious about the two theme songs we’ve gotten because it’s technically fuel for a ship they don’t like (even though part of its identity is not culminating, even acknowledging it is too much).
Oh God, anime song sperging is the worst kind of sperging. I request details.

I confess to being a bit confused by your meaning. Are you saying replaying the last stand from CC or a different last stand?

I like the idea of playing Zack instead of say cid and seeing him attempt to save the day his own way. It would probably go badly, but I did like seeing him interact with other characters and try to figure out a plan. I liked seeing Zack again, he just felt the most out of place in the big picture.

I'm saying I hope they don't make us play the final fight from Crisis Core in FF7, cause the original game had this cutscene:

That suffices.
I hope they don't make us play it, cause then what made the ending of Crisis Core special is basically undone.

Eh, I don't think they will. It already got a makeover in reunion and I was particularly impressed they didn't try to tie anything to the remake.

I like Rebirth but it is so bloated.
There is too much shit to do.
It took me half a year to finish it as I got bored of all the shit to do.

To be honest I skipped a lot to just go through the main campaign and avoid spoilers. Was impressed at how good and meaty it felt even without the side content.

For that much space, the game map better be the size of fucking Daggerfall, at least.
Its actually pretty fucking big, and even the Junon outskirts are a major "woah" when you can stand there and look up at the giant-ass city built into the cliff.

Gonna be playing Rebirth soon, what do I need to know going into it ? I skipped out on Remake since I've played the original game probably three or four times now and Midgar is always a slog, and I don't want to spend an entire game just doing Midgar story events for the millionth time. I know some things have changed though and that they set up the story a bit differently, so I wrote the few things I wanted to question, not sure how much of a spoiler they are:
  • Zack is alive? So how the fuck did Cloud even get his sword then?
  • And Jessie and Biggs are alive as well? They should have gotten crushed by the plate so not really sure how that happened.
  • I heard that the little ghost things are there to make sure that the events go the way the original game went, but since they got defeated now it's open season for changing whatever they want to with this story. Or at least that's my understanding of it.
I've been intentionally avoiding spoilers due to the fact that I know that they're going to change stuff with the story and that they already have, so I really just want to know what changed between the original story and now so that I'm not surprised by anything that I should already know.
