I think XVI gets hate not for being different, but for being bland, safe, and unfun at times. For me it felt too much like FFXIV in terms of the feel (the music, the setting, the focus on the primals, etc).

The story is all over the place and the game never really focuses on any of the allegedly meaningful relationships (outside of Cid, possibly). It feels like they wanted XVI to have a much longer story where you spent a lot more time with the characters (aka in FF Tactics or even XV) and get to know them a lot better and then just ran out of ideas and time skipped a second time. It feels short/rushed on the back half.

XV was disliked for being a huge mess but I find that people liked a lot of the ideas and characters in it, despite it being a huge mess.
Oh people absolutely hate it for being different, the darker Game of Thrones tone and button-mashing gameplay threw tons off from the first trailer alone and I was initially among them. I haven’t seen many complaints regarding it being “safe”, more so ones about how it doesn’t feel like Final Fantasy. Which, frankly, it doesn’t. They basically put in the bare minimum requirements for an FF game. That said. I’d argue it shows us quite a few meaningful relationships, especially if you do the side quests, but that some characters don’t get as much agency, a common criticism being how Jill in particular kind of gets sidelined. She was a massive step up from how badly they fumbled Luna though.

XV got a very mixed reception, but the one thing most agreed on was that the chocobros and Ardyn were well done. Other characters like Luna, not so much. The timeskips in both games hurt them majorly too.

The fact that Noctis had much more chemistry with that random collab chick in 30 minutes than with the main female lead over the course of the entire game says a lot

They seriously fucked Luna so hard, it’s shameful when you look at her original concept as Stella and realize she was supposed to play a much bigger role in the story. Even in Kingsglaive she has better characterization and more chemistry with Nyx. Giving her daemon-absorbing powers in the novel meant to fix the ending was too little too late.

What does Final Fantasy "feel" like at this point? Every game is so vastly different in both setting and mechanics, that this is basically a useless descriptor. Its basically just saying "This Final Fantasy game doesn't play exactly like the one Final Fantasy I like!" Which, given the fanbase, is usually either FFVII, FFVIII, or FFX.

When I mean "safe" I mean them using concepts and themes they already know worked from FFXIV. The focus on the primals, the sound design, parts of the world building, and so on.

I think part of why FFXVI doesn't feel like a "complete" Final Fantasy to me is because it doesn't have a distinct enough feeling from XIV. For all of XV's faults, it stood out as it's own world to me.

I inferred as much, but I still haven’t seen as many complaints about it being samey in comparison to ones about XVI being darker and edgier with a DMC playstyle or the villains being bad. And even then, I’d call it disappointment, not outright hate, over the “safe” criticisms. The soundtrack does get quite a few of these though.

When I say XVI doesn’t really feel like a Final Fantasy game, I’m referring to how it doesn’t feel like a JRPG. It lacks the usual mechanics of elemental weaknesses, the weapons and armor system is incredibly shallow, and there are only a few staple FF creatures. It just feels surface-level in comparison to so many other entries that do well in these aspects.

I mean, I do hate people and things which are different from me and my views, but I’ve also heard FFXVI just falls off really hard as it goes on
I wouldn't say falls off really hard, but definitely wears thin as it goes on. I was very ready to be done by the end and honestly bored with some of the later fights because they rarely had anything new to really challenge me with and the combat mechanics weren't interesting enough to have me constantly switching things up.

Re: feeling too much like XIV, I felt like it was gritty enough, especially near the beginning, to set itself apart. I think what a lot of people are picking up is the nagging feeling that if Yoshi-P and his team are the future of mainline FF, then you'll be getting every game about how important summons and fighting them are before seeing a crystal and the prelude plays. Also the worst MMO-style quests possible.

A westernized DMC clone with faggotry definitely does not feel like FF, no matter how different prior games were from each other.

The one thing I'll say about 13 is that it at least it was fun to play. The modern "one button to win" battle systems are boring as fuck.
I think the characters are halfway decent too. It's a very interesting premise at least "A girl is missing, her sister and her fiancé (who do not like each other) go on a quest to rescue her".

The gameplay tried to do some interesting things too and it just didn't land right.

That makes a lot more sense. The armor/weapon system was extremely shallow and felt tacked on.

Other weapons having other playstyles would have went a long way (but probably would have interacted poorly with the primals).

If its a useless descriptor, then why bring it up especially since those two things have nothing to do with how people should "feel" about these games?

If I had to say, what is it about FF16 that "feels" off for most people that have played other previous entries, it would simply be its more mature, darker tone and direction. Most of the other games don't even come close to this particular approach.

I think I will include these two other features
1) The game seems designed more to appeal to the West and was in turn inspired by the West (e.g. Game of Thrones) which so far as I'm concerned hasn't been done since Final Fantasy Tactics and
2) Also like Final Fantasy Tactics, this game is pretty bereft in humor, something that a lot previous installments always made some room for.

They learned their lesson with 13-2 and Lightning Returns at least imo. I'd ask for a non woke female protagonist but they'll never do it. Hell why not have the FF universe cross paths with Star Ocean and Valkyrie Imperium

Noctis has more chemistry with his cellphone than he does with Luna.

Was Nomura involved with XV? Because that’s such a Nomura hallmark it’s unreal. The gay shipping in Kingdom Hearts, besides the larger than usual female fanbase, is so pronounced because Kairi’s presence/chemistry is so nominal.

He was supposed to be the director at first before Square switched him over to Kingdom Hearts 3, but he did have a story and characters planned out already. Not sure how much of his stuff ended up in the final product but Lunafreya's minimal screentime might've been part of it, idk

For what it's worth, i think the relationship between Noctis and his bros was very well executed, they all act like people you know irl, if Nomura wrote those characters like that then ill take it as proof that he can write male characters... He just cant do the same for females at all
