Offtopic, outside of the usual political sperging: one Mastodon instance I used to be on had not only personal blogs, political news, but also, for some reason I'm never going to comprehend, K-pop stans.

Who literally used the local tweettoot feed as their personal chatroom. No quoting anyone like you'd do on Twitter. just dumb and seemingly disjointed posts. Peak tech literacy.

This is just how people chat on Mastodon. It's better than using reply because for some reason Mastodon doesn't display replies to the rest of your followers unless they are also following the person you are replying to. They don't display on the local feed either. So people end up just chatting without using @

Funny how the stans are still the only people I saw do that.

This isn't about Mastodon, but it's still related to the Fediverse. The Reddit API protests of June 2023 have caused many Redditors and subreddit jannies to engage in a pointless protest against the Reddit corporation, but it also caused a noticeable amount of users to migrate away from Reddit entirely to Reddit-like alternatives. The largest migration has been to Lemmy and Kbin, which are open-source link aggregators that use the same communication protocol as Mastodon, making them a part of the same Fediverse.

Interestingly, while the Redditor refugees claim that they migrated because they are tired of the power dynamics and censorship of Reddit, their goal for the new platform is clearly to recreate Reddit. Trannies who were never granted the opportunity to moderate a subreddit quickly started their own instances so they could finally know what it felt like to hold the mop. Redditors cannot bear to read opinions that don't align with mainstream liberal progressivism, so they are constantly hand-wringing about "Nazi bars" and how Republicans existing on the network is literal genocide to them. The most discussed topics are calls to block entire instances because single-digit numbers of their users were observed engaging in wrongthink, and begging the developers to implement cancerous Reddit moderation tools like shadowbanning and automatic banning of users who participate in wrongthink communities. This trend was started by a large tranny-operated safe space instance blocking two very large instances because their feelings were hurt from having to manually read troll comments and ban them.

What do you think will happen to the Redditor refugee camps on the Fediverse? Will they fragment into sanitized safe spaces and kill the network? Will the tranny jannies become bored by how they don't have millions of Redditors to lord over anymore and crawl back to Reddit? Will all of the instances shut down one by one as stingy Redditors refuse to contribute to operating costs? Or will this be a rare success story where former Redditors manage to undo the brainwashing caused by Reddit?

Honestly, makes sense. Though I've seen the SEA peeps use Twitter normally as well, so...
It's because of the software the Asian servers use. Mastodon can retrieve messages from other types of Fediverse software like Pleroma. Many Asian servers use Misskey, whose interface is designed around live flows of messages in a chatroom-like layout. But these messages also appear on the Twitter-like interfaces and are formatted like tweets.

Japs primarily on Misskey instances often post exactly like that. Must be some curtural thing.

Someone decided to make a lemmy community(Basically a subreddit) called The_Donald and the based free speech lemmy users pushed them out and offered to do a hecking hostile takeover if that didn't stick...

I'm sorry I can't make a better post. I'm on mobile and I have no idea how to go back to find old fediverse posts. But there is drama on the trannyverse again.

Calckey, now known as Firefish, is a fork of Misskey, the Japanese fediverse software. The lead dev, Thatonecalculator allegedly forked Misskey because it wasn't LGBTQ-friendly enough. I'm not sure how that is possible considering the lead dev of Misskey is a literal crossdresser who posts pictures of his thighs in a skirt.

Since its creation Calckey has already been involved in drama multiple times. It first started when the lead dev's instance (at the time called stop.voring.me I think, later a new one was set up at calckey.social) joined this project: https://ufoi.org/ (the United Federation of Instances) which is basically a group of Fediverse instances that agree not to defederate each other. This wasn't well received by the trannyverse, which loves to fediblock. So all the trannies started fediblocking Thatonecalculator's instance for federating with fascists. As a result Thatonecalculator immediately removed himself from the project and begged the trannies to forgive him and unblock because he was lied to by the nazis.

This week Calckey went big on rebranding itself to Firefish. They created a page called https://joinfirefish.org/ that is reminiscent of the joinmastodon.org page that is responsible for directing the influx of Twitter refugees onto the official mastodon.social instance, causing the Fediverse to become more centralized. They are launching an official instance at firefish.social but can be currently found at https://fedi.software . Since rebranding there has been further drama:

Drama number 1. The Calckey and later Firefish project was apparently hosted on a "nazi gitlab instance" . This made a lot of trannies big mad:

I don't know what the "political stances"they are referring to are.

Drama number 2. Some of the contributors to the source code are forking Firefish and going their own way, to work on Iceshrimp. The reason? Firefish is trademarked in the UK apparently. But there is more. Apparently devs for the project had a falling out after drama number 1. Whole exchange:

Drama number 3. After the rebrand to Firefish, someone hijacked the official Calckey repo which was then up for grabs. There are no archives of it before it was taken down so it is unclear who did it and why but it prevented people from being redirected to the new repo when pulling from it.

Screenshot_2023-07-25-19-08-57-03_3aea4af51f236e4932235fdada7d1643.jpg

An email from a representative reveals that this was a "user causing chaos" and that they possibly chose the convenience of redirecting over the security of locking down the repo from being grabbed. 🤔

I foresee more drama on the horizon for Firefish. Calculator is one of those retards that fediblock instances for not participating in fediblock. I am not sure if he is still the lead dev for this as this person is going by another name but the attitude is the same. Just confirmed Kainoa is in fact Thatonecalculator and even his own friends seem confused by the name change.

Something I find perplexing on the fediverse are the group of Japanese instances which seem to only contain users which spew out nothing but loli and shota hentai at timed intervals.

I don't know if these are humans who have extensive collections of this trash and feel the need to share their fap fuel with the whole world, or bot accounts linked to Stable Diffusion set up to generate such material set up to post indefinitely.

Whichever it is, they're annoying as fuck (as are their fans, mainly located on Poast and Chudbuds who enthusiastically repost this crap).

On the topic of degeneracy:

@Fëanor Curufinwë mentioned the following tranny drama:

Ah, that moment you look up an open-source project and realise that this thing will never get finished because the contributors spend more time bitching at each other and life in general than programming.

When you've lost an argument on the internet:

Normal person: admit defeat/shut up.
Autist: chimp out and DFE.
Troon: Start again using another name.

May I add:

Refusing to defederate/block = INTOLERANT BIGOTRY!

defederating/blocking those who will not = SUCH BRAVERY!

I'm gonna guess said timed intervals are when salarymen get home in UTC+9.
I might have written it badly. What I mean wasn't protracted silence followed by a large burst of material, then back to silence, but more like:

single picture --> ~8min nothing --> single picture --> ~8min nothing, etc.

That was the behaviour of a single account on a server which had several such accounts.

The latest this could have been at was 16:00 Tokyo time.

NOTE: The thought that these were coomers sharing their latest wanks did occur to me at first too, but I discounted it because nobody has the endurance to just keep going in  perpetuum, and the downtime between "issues" did not increase.

That is, unless "Training your dragon*" really did work as well as was promised?

*This was a spam email scam from the mid-to-late '90s similar to the Viagra stuff.

The sales pitch hinged on the existence of "an ancient oriental secret derived from the Martial Arts" which could double or triple your penis size, confer inhuman endurance, hold back your semen on command, store it in your testicles(lol) and be able to ejaculate up to a pint of this "stored seed", among many other dubious benefits.

This secret method, "Known to the initiated as Training The Dragon", was now available in the West thanks to the efforts of a person usually called "Professor Chen" from Tokyo(sometimes Beijing), and his "patented Chinese(or Japanese) Dick Gym, a set of simple daily exercises of benefit to every man blah blah blah..."

To learn these you had to send a substantial amount of money to the scammer to get the "Professor"'s book.

The good outcome was the scammer just stealing your money. The "book", which was more like a pamphlet, was chock-full of terrible ideas like attaching weights to the shaft of the penis and bouncing up and down on a trampoline to lengthen it(risk of rupturing the corpora cavernosa and being rendered impotent as well as deforming the penis), or tying a tourniquet around the base of the shaft, then squeezing one out, to identify the muscles needed to ejaculate into the testes for later "training"(you'll be lucky if you get away with priapism from this).

Have you seen Meta's Threads lately? It's literally worse than pre-Elon Twitter.

So apparently a bot from an IP address tied to MIT was scanning across fedi. The person responsible claims it was in order to screen to see what kind of news is shared and what kind of “toxic language” is being used across these instances.

archive because it’s fedi | post

I can’t say I’m surprised that anyone from MIT would do this, given the increase in users after Musk’s purchase of twitter. Mastodon, particularly mastodon.social, picked up a lot of traction in the following days after #ElonGate since it offered users a platform with the same kind of rules, censorship and tolerance for sex pests and groomers that the old twitter used to offer. I don’t know if I’m making a mountain out of a mole hill here, but it kind of concerns me that people are trying to peer across the federated networks in order to see what naughty news and words are being shared.

Gonna go through and screencap some of the posts. Here's the original post that started everything:
mita.jpg (a)

Initial reactions, including discussion of ways to block the MIT bot, discovery that David Rand has a grant from the Open Society Foundation, discovery of David potentially "stretching the truth" on his website's bio, analysis of the bot's activity and the extent of the performance issues it was causing, and Kevin Karhan (DropKiwiFarms lolcow) suggesting people sue MIT :story::
mitb.jpg mitc.jpg mite.jpg mitf.jpg mitg.jpg mith.jpg mitd.jpg

Rand responded soon after with this:
miti.jpg
(Wayback save of that Google Doc)

His reception was less than warm:
mitj.jpg mitk.jpg mitl.jpg mitm.jpg mitn.jpg mito.jpg

And finally, Rand edited his response to further clarify what the issue with the bot was:

man if i knew 3k requests over a month would piss off half the fediverse i'd have done it months ago (in minecraft)

are these people really this neurotic or are they running their shit on raspberry pi's?

i enjoy how they complain about "user privacy" too, while another openly displays how they keep access logs for over a month and don't anonymize IP addresses. privacy indeed.

the image with traffic numbers got cutoff also, i found it - archive: (a frankly ludicrous traffic spike of...... 35 RPS)
