I'm going to add this to the list of positives of having your own instance: You don't get the stigma of the whole instance on you from a first glance.

Lots of people still treat it as a fancier Twitter and stick up to a single instance and its jannies while the way federation works pretty much encouranges you if not to set up own server then at least have several alts across different instances to get a full view of the network.

This helps if you wind up on an instance where the owner defederates instances at the drop of a hat. It’s always ideal to have alts across instances and anyone who tells you differently just wants control or something. It pissed off the owner of gearlandia that I had multiple alts I could fuck off to and leave his if I wanted to.

I expect this to work just about as well as when people try to organize a mass movement away from Youtube to the new flavor of the month video host. Except in that case there are actually valid reasons to move. I guess Fediverse is at least not as volatile and costly by design, but I don't see this working out for them.

Seeing all these journos moving to the Fediverse and complaining about the unfiltered nature of many nodes is absolutely hilarious. They really think they can censor stuff on other platforms like they once were able to. I haven't gone onto mastodon or journo.host just yet so I can't offer much but these screenshots from Clairebere (Archive )
