I think most tv shows should keep things to only four seasons, especially for a plot line like The Boys. They’ll eventually have to actually succeed at killing Homelander, otherwise people will get tired of the buildup and letdown. I would like to see real character development of more than just people like Hughie. An interesting direction could be to make something trigger Homelander feeling real remorse, and trying to be better, when no one actually likes him because of past actions. Though, I think that type of writing is too advanced for what the writers are capable of.
I’ve actually enjoyed the show quite a bit thus far, but one thing that helps is just the phrase “in that universe.” They obviously pull from reality, but despite being marketed as more “realistic,” it’s definitely not. For one, way too many of the characters just have plot armor and don’t succumb to injuries as quickly as they should (pretty much everyone part of The Boys, save for Kimiko that has self healing). Another unrealistic aspect is how no one in universe actually has any superhero fatigue save for people that actually suffered from them. In the opening shots of season 1, you see just how over saturated superheroes are in all media. Vought is also like Disney, but even more powerful. I’m actually surprised it took Stormfront to start making criticism of Vought mainstream “in that universe.” In a world closer to the reality they want to depict, you’d already see grassroots movements of that, as people from all political sides typically have a bone to pick with one or more megacorps.
I don’t know how they’re going to stretch it out to more seasons when Butcher has just months to live after abusing V. I’m betting they’ll pull some Deus ex Machina where they figure out some antidote to V’s side effects just to keep Butcher around longer. If the writers have the guts, they should actually just kill Butcher off, and force Hughie, MM, Frenchie, Annie, and Kimiko to fight Homelander themselves. It would raise the stakes and possibly force a more creative way to defeat Homelander.
My biggest frustration is that characters are way too static, on all sides. We need some real character changes to make it new and exciting.
