Did Unity butcher history as much as people claim? My knowledge of the French Revolution is too poor for me to know if there's any truth to that.
In what way? All Assassin's Creed games rape history.
The most interesting thing about Unity to me was that it basically adapted a real life conspiracy theory into its plot (that the Revolution was a false flag to discredit revolutions in the future). You also get to see Robespierre get shot in the jaw. I mostly remember it being pretty accurate, the game marketing made it out like you're a revolutionary but you actually have nothing to do with toppling the Crown. The Girondists are the good guys of the setting, which is debatable because as I understand there was a dynamic in France where Jacobins were political extremists but diplomatic moderates and Girondists were political moderates but diplomatic extremists, so either is fair game to be the villain depending on which take you want to make. But Mirabeau and like are easily romanticized like Trotsky since they didn't make it long enough to reveal themselves for what they were. (Honestly, the older I get and the more I learn about this stuff, the more I LIKE Robespierre.)

Unity raped the French Revolution just by having all the actual historical missions be locked behind the shitty multiplayer/co-op mission mode that has very little to do with the main story while the main story was a bland love story. Having pretty much every character speak in a British accent was also terrible. Unity really shines when it comes to the city itself, the amount of detail Paris had was insane.

Yeah, I hated that too, the coop missions were way cooler but they were way too difficult solo and not tied into the main story.

As mentioned before, playing as Haytham for the whole game would have been neat. It was the first thing I thought of when I started playing as Connor. You could even have Connor kill him at the end, some emotional moment between the two, and then play the post-game as Connor.
