ETA: To add onto what I said before, I never care when people who aren't racist say the n word, cause they don't mean anything by it. I guess I get a little hurt if someone's saying it with genuine malice, but what am I gonna do about it? If he said it in genuine disgust towards blacks, I might not see the movie insofar as "He probably wouldn't like me being a fan and I should respect his wishes", but he's cool with us and I think the joke was funny anyway.

The point of cancellation is not to be pro-social, it's to cultivate an atmosphere of fear and neuroticism, and create a chilling effect that pervades all cultural production and social interaction. The aim isn't to create a post-racial utopia where everyone gets along (they had that in the 90's and threw it away), the aim is to terrorize the population into tolerating the looting for a little bit longer than they otherwise would.

For that purpose, going after some random guy who meant no harm is much more effective than trying to cancel a neo-Nazi skinhead who says it on an hourly basis.
