That has been the popular theory since day one; even MatPat made a video about it.

If anything, the real subversion would be if they were actual people and not just brain scans. Gooseworx even said the whole point of the series is about “finding meaning in a stagnant existence”—a moral that only makes sense if they cannot leave.

Them just being brain scans is actually the most obvious answer, because you only have to extrapolate to the cruelest possible outcome. It’s also the theory with the most clues backing it up.

I don’t know how realistic or cartoony the real explanation will be, but if they were just trapped in there as real people, they would have died long ago from thirst and starvation.

Ragatha and Pomni only remember casually putting on a headset. Ragatha was even with other people—not kidnapped or forced. Yet nobody noticed anything wrong for years? Highly unlikely, unless you believe it was a conspiracy involving an evil company kidnapping people and keeping them in stasis pods (an idea the show already mocked, by the way). It makes far more sense that nobody noticed anything wrong, because nothing was wrong. They simply put on a headset and resumed their lives as far as the real world is concerned.

There’s a lot of evidence, but I’ll spare you the full YouTube video-essay treatment. I’ll just mention the two biggest ones: Kinger saying “it does not make any sense” that they could leave, and them having unique “mind files.” Brains don’t need files to function, but AI scans do.

Point is, them being real is actually harder to explain at this point. With GW being a textbook manchild "edgelord," what would actually subvert my expectations is them just removing the headsets and having a happy ending.

I could go on a tirade about how bullshit and out of context these things and other quotes are to push the thing again but I'm too tired right now to do so.
 
If Kinger made Caine and then deleted him, and Caine was just as much a person as the rest of the cast, does that mean we basically saw an abortion?

You can do if you wish, but I have no interest in debating the lore of the show, or proving a theory right, so chances are high I would just nod to you and move on. Especially with the real answer around the corner. My point isn’t to push a fan theory. The point is that them being unable to leave is actually the expected ending.

“There’s nothing “to push”. It’s right or wrong, and we will just have to wait for the finale.

Lore aside, again Gooseworx is a man-child “edgelord” that gleefully makes jokes about murdering people in the same breath he makes drawings of goofy cartoon clowns doing silly things, and this is based on a notoriously depressing short story “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream!,”

A well executed happy ending would actually subvert my expectations. Emphasis on “well executed”

I just had the realization why kinger looks familiar to me (as in before I ever saw this thing years ago)

His design is literally just a fucking rareware n64 game character stylistically and you can really see this shit with the merch

No I mean his character design philosophy is a bit more rareware than croc. Croc has the same kinda eyes on some characters but it's not "character who may or may not be based on an inanimate object with goofy sticking out eyes with extremely detailed shading despite the simplistic cartoony design" like kinger and some of the banjo guys. Hell caine also fits that banjo shit design and I guess that makes sense cause he's technically kinger's son in a weird way.
