Your theory that shitty PR adaptations affected Sentai toy sales is just nonsense.

The Timeranger toy line was notoriously unpopular. Gaoranger toys were hugely popular so much so that they specifically made the Hurricanger toys backwards compatible with the power animals, sales didn't go up cause Time Force was good. If that logic worked, Timeranger should've had great toy sales cause of Lightspeed Rescue in particular with all the Titanium Ranger exclusive stuff.

Gekiranger had bad toy sales regardless of the quality of Operation Overdrive.

Power Rangers Samurai aired TWO YEARS after Shinkenger ended so it would not have affected the toy sales of Goseiger. PR Samurai ironically was very popular at least with kids and was arguably the last time it was genuinely popular with them organically. So if Samurai was gonna affect a series toy sales, it would've been Gokaiger. Which again, if your theory were correct, Gokaiger should've had plummeting toy sales due to a shitty Power Rangers airing at the time.

Unsurprised that toy sales steadily declined overall after Kyoryuger. The DX mecha line of Hurricanger, Dekaranger and Magiranger are my personal favorites.

Isn't it more of a retrospective? They used the same molds for both the PR toys and SS toys, right? If they did not and they did not make money from reusing the same molds then I am wrong. Still, it kind of weirdly lines up with what seasons of PR are considered good. But yes, I knew that Samurai aired much later than Shinkenger. Still, I felt that the graph represented money made from the toylines as a whole (SS and PR) combined. Like, if they repackaged the SS stuff for the PR and that did not sell either.

there was a house on my bike ride to work that had one on their lawn, it was apparently left out by a relative but it worked REALLY well as a giant robot lawn gnome

The moulds changed in Operation Overdrive. That's when Disney tried to maximize profits by remaking the toys to reduce part counts and function. The mecha especially suffered. The Overdrive mecha couldn't even combine like they did in the show because they were so neutered. Saban continued the trend as well. The Samurai Megazord was smaller and has reduced parts to the point that the individual zords has no origami mode like the original, and the "Samurai Ultrazord" didn't actually have a toy version as I recall. Basically just completely different toys since Overdrive, which meant collectors had to start importing sentai mecha for the full experience.

I think that it would indeed help the downfall in sales if they switched the molds. Still, I would want a graph that showed how much of the profit was PR FOR EACH SEASON. You know, to find out how each PR season helped.

I don't think there's ever been concrete numbers for any seasons besides the first few maybe? At least not that I'm aware of.

Then I am inclined to believe that PR going to shit ruined SS profit. PR went from a globally recognized juggernaut (there is nothing like it on TV) to an afterthought. I have not seen proof otherwise. Yes, KR overshadowed SS but it would not have been as bad if PR was still using Bandai and it did not suck.

It did. The original is still better overall, though. I also remember seeing those cheap-looking deluxe Operation Overdrive toys the first time from Target especially that "triple transforming Megazord" that I don't think it appeared in the show itself.

The latter half of Fiveman already saw increasing ratings and toy sales. Jetman being a mega hit actually helped prevent cancelation, so much so Saban was originally gonna adapt it.


While it was a massive blunder on Bandai's part to sell of US toy rights, the numbers were already in steep decline.

It's been an almost continual downward trend since Kyoryuger, long before Hasbro. And once again look at how KR exploded in sales without the need for western popularity.

I dropped Ryusoulger relatively early in its run, despite liking it, and haven't watched any of either since. Looking back on this chart its easy to see why. I had forgotten about the absolutely colossal fart that was Ex-Aid, Lupinranger, etc.

One of the conceits of the show is that the Lupinrangers have to win every fight or they won't be able to complete Lupin's magic book. So like Cat's Eye (which the show seems to be primarily based off of) you're going to get a lot of focus on them because its their story driving the plot.

The show does eventually spend time developing the Patrangers, and Keiichiro ends up being one of the best reds in all of sentai. Stay tuned.

Seen in the new arrivals on Tubi, now amongst their toku offerings is Space Sheriff Gavan, and while I have been into some of the later entries in the Metal Heroes series, it's the Space Sheriff series that really stuck with me.

Also noticing, just added one of those odd ducks that pop up sometimes in long-running franchises, the unsold TV pilot turned film "Ultraman: The Adventure Begins", an attempt at sparking interest in Ultraman in the US, jointly produced by Tsuburaya and Hanna-Barbera and it is very Hanna-Barbera.
