Not certain if anyone's following Kamen Rider Revice but based off the preview for episode 25 looks like it's plot dump incoming that episode.

Still mixed on the series. It's not bad but it's not really grabbed me much either. Maybe it's that Vice has felt a bit overlooked or maybe it's the lack of much around the demons but it's not really feeling great. That said I do believe they've made Vice a lot less annoying than I felt the knee-jerk reaction about when I first caught episodes. I also do appreciate the combo aspects of Vice and Revi more than I thought I would to the degree that when they're not together it feels wrong.

Zenkaiger ended by leaning into its weakest aspects. They never did cure Cutter and Ricky. Flint just created a new gear that lets them transform into humans. Kaito and the Kikanoids then pulled an Ayra and decided to explore what's west of Westeros. Oh, and God was real, but gave up his evil scheme when Kaito beat him in rock-paper-scissors (no, really).

Zenkaiger had a really great middle run of episodes. Shame it focused so heavily on the "story" towards the end.

Now I'm just waiting for the fansubbers to stop dragging ass and finish Donbrothers.

I think Toei massively fucked up by having Vice in the final episode of Saber farting and being unendingly annoying. I am on the fence with Revice, because for every good aspect it has (Demons, the monster designs, the soundtrack) it has equal parts bad (Jeanne and how badly Vice is trying to ape off of Den-O's shtick and failing)

Revice is at least an improvement from Saber, the whole back half of that series and all the rider in fighting got old. At least when other shows have a shit ton of riders there's monsters in there to balance it out ala Gaim and Ryuki. I thought I had seen something about Saber couldn't have recurring guests because covid and all the recurring people because main staples of the cast and then it was just bloated.

Zenkaiger on the other hand I'm glad is over, it was fun for a while but every single episode was the same thing over and over again trying to throw in old sentai references. They remembered with 4 episodes to go how much plot they still had to wrap up and I enjoyed the last few episodes more than any other in the series. Interested to see how DonBrothers is, even though I don't like how they all look. And as usual they think this is going to be the last sentai series because it and its toy sales are dropping.

I had to consoom and buy the Zero One blu ray set from shoutfactory, which is pretty nice. I hadn't kept all my encodes when I downloaded them back then. Plus the fansub purge from last year, I didn't feel like searching for it and am pretty happy to have this collection. Got it off targets website for about 20 dollars cheaper than shoutfactorys website.

To be fair anything could've been an improvement from fucking Saber, that's hardly saying much since that's the lowest bar Kamen Rider has ever had to pass. I gave up on Revice before Jean became a thing but nothing about what I heard makes it sound like I've missed much if anything at all.

So Donbrothers is basically a toku version of the film They Live.

The premiere wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The cgi on bird ranger is awful, but they also have a suit actor for close-ups.

The episode heavily features Oni-Sister, the female ranger. She does this magnificent slide move twice in the episode.

And the man himself gets an incredible entrance.

I loved Zenkaiger, so I'm cautiously optimistic for Donbrothers.

I’ve just finished Tiga and I must say, it’s a great revival to Ultraman.

The show has a unique variety of characters and monsters that make it fresh and the episodes have a great depth to them. I can’t wait to watch Dyna next. I’ve seen Gaia and it’s a masterpiece.

Dyna is great, as is Nexus and Max. Mebius is good, if not slightly overrated. The only season in the 90s-early to mid 2000s I didn't like was Cosmos.
Off topic, but what are your thoughts on the newer series?

I think New Gen shows are a lot of wasted potential. 25 episodes isn’t enough to flesh out your characters and stories. I hate how they reuse monsters and imagery from the original Ultraman and Ultraseven as well. To me, they are trying to ape Sentai and Rider a bit too hard.

I agree with you 1000%. I immediately lose interest in an Ultra series when OH BOY ITS REDKING again, or OR BOY ITS GUBILA AGAIN.
I liked Ginga somewhat, S was much better, X was boring, Orb was great, Geed is underrated and has a great cast, R/B sucked, Taiga REALLY sucked, Z was great and Trigger was essentially Tiga: the circlejerk.
I know I posted a wall of autism, my bad.

With the Ultra Series, I've only watched the first Ultraman series, a little bit of Ultra Q, and the movie Ultraman: The Next.

Any other recommendations for Ultra series stuff I should check out?

I'm pretty fine with the returning monsters.
One thing I've learned with New Gen Ultra it's about how they use the returning monster in the story more than anything.
Like, say what you will about Taiga, but their Nackle episode is one of the best episodes in all of the New Gen era, arguably all of Ultra.
Or Geed finally bringing Gyeron back and making a really cool episode.
Z's use of Red King, Bullton, Kemur, Baraba...etc.
Or at the least, get a cool fight.

Ultraseven has just as much influence on the series as the OG Ultman does and when it hits high, it hits high. It also completes Eiji Tsuburaya's Ultra "trilogy".

Den-O was where I went with the second episode and I don't think any of those involved are going to try to deny taking some inspiration. But it's not too similar, not least because they kept a degree of antagonism with Vice for a lot longer, and is different enough I'd say. I'm mixed on Vice but compared to him in the Saber episode I think they pulled it back quite well. Have to wonder if they got some fairly pointed test audience feedback although given the initial episodes of Revice I'm not certain.

I did quite enjoy the opening. Especially the fixed family smiles that were so forced it might has well have had "Foreshadowing" flashing in the background. Overall though like you I'm mixed on the show itself. I think on balance it'll be seen as a fairly neutral show, not bad but not great either. I don't see late season turnarounds at this point, we're far enough in that it's too late unless it's something astounding.

I didn't actually think about Covid's impact on Saber. But they were dropping in more riders from the get-go so I don't think they can blame it just on that.

Going to give some of the other sentai series a go after a bit of Kamen Rider, think I've seen most of the better series of that now.

The Donbrothers dance is simultaneously the dumbest and most amazing thing I've ever seen.

Speaking of dances, I always thought the Kiramagers group pose was awkward as hell, but I saw this today and I gotta give the actors props for pulling it off in a live show. (Although Sayo looks incredible uncomfortable up there.)

Can't say I get the "OMG IT'S SO EARLY HEISEI KAMEN RIDER BRO" thing I've read over and over when it comes to DonBrothers but I'm enjoying it a lot so far, definitely more than I did Revice from the episodes I watched. Just wish InuBrother and KijiBrother weren't CGI nightmares.

So we have a new Ultra Series in 2022. Ultaman Decker. And like Trigger, it's going to be a New Generation Dyna,.
View attachment Ultraman_Decker_poster.webp

Like Dyna was a sequel to Tiga, Decker will take place years after Trigger. The Spheres from Dyna are set to return as the villains.
