#BoycottMalaysia is causing tensions between India and Malaysia. Here's what we know.

BY MAE YEN YAP16 HOURS, 51 MINUTES
A #BoycottMalaysia hashtag is trending on Twitter after the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Several Twitter users from India are calling for a boycott of Malaysian products and the nation itself after Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's comments regarding the ongoing conflicts in Jammu and Kashmir.
Why did #BoycottMalaysia begin?
It all started with a speech.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=DbZ-RQHcc8gDuring the General Debate of the 74th session of UNGA on September 27, Mahathir began by speaking of Israel, acts of terrorism and the current fate of Rohingyas in Myanmar.
What caught the attention of netizens from India, however, was his next sentence.
"Now, despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied. There may be reasons for this action, but it is still wrong. The problem must be solved by peaceful means," Mahathir said during his speech. "India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problems. Ignoring the UN would lead to other forms of disregards toward the United Nations and the Rule of Law."
A day later, Mahathir followed up on Twitter referring back to his earlier speech.

The helplessness of the world in stopping atrocities inflicted on the Rohingyas in Myanmar had reduced the regard for the resolution of the UN. Now, despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied.

What happens next?
Previously in September, Mahathir had met with India Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Russia to discuss both the issues of Kashmir and the extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, according to The Economic Times.
Mahathir was said to have not show support or opposition to any parties but hoped that the conflict "would be settled and it would not escalate in a war," also suggesting a third party to moderate talks or bringing the issue of Kashmir to international court.
India is currently Malaysia's 10th largest trading partner with a total bilateral trade target of US$15 billion set for 2020 being achieved during 2018/2019, according to MalaysiaKini.
At the end of his speech at the UNGA, Mahathir said the UN's original purpose should be reinstated.
"We must punish warmongers. We must make the world peaceful for all. That was our mission and that must remain our mission," he said. "Only if we succeed can we claim that we are civilized."

How #BoycottMalaysia Led to a Twitter War Between Indians and Malaysians

It's not unusual for a hashtag that's often filled with hate to trend on Twitter. What is unusual about this particular hashtag-- #BoycottMalaysia-- is that it has managed to divide two countries that are somewhat unlikely enemies.
While #BoycottMalaysia started trending on Twitter, no one could figure out what exactly happened-- Do Indians want to boycott Malaysia? Or do Malaysians want Indians to boycott their country? Well, both.

The story of this hashtag is quite confusing.
A speech by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Bin Mohamad at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly irked a few Indians. In his speech, the Malaysian PM raised the issue of Kashmir along with Turkey and China. His remarks accusing India of “invading and occupying the country” of Jammu and Kashmir have not particularly gone down well for many Indians, who have supported the abrogation of Article 370.
In his speech, the Malaysian PM had said, "Now, despite the UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied". He further urged India to "work with Pakistan to resolve this problem."
One of his tweets added fury to the fire. He said, "The helplessness of the world in stopping atrocities inflicted on the Rohingyas in Myanmar had reduced the regard for the resolution of the UN. Now, despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied."
His statements outraged several Indians, who took to Twitter to express resentment against his observation on the Kashmir issue.

The Indians can increase pressure on Malaysia by turning their entire eastern coast into an unrestricted designated shitting zone, allowing the currents to bring the potent payload to Malaysia's western shores.

So this isn't so much a situation of "Rising Tensions" as it is an honest to god twitter slap fight between spergs from both nations? Impressive!

I mean there is nothing shocking in the Myanmar President's calls for peaceful negotiation between India and Pakistan. It's the standard wishy washy and nice diplomatic thing other nations say, when they don't have a real dog in the fight and want to appear enlightened. Everybody knows what he wants is weak inefectual and has been tried over and over for half the 20th century. But it's not anything to start boycotting a country over. Heck in actual diplomatic speak he even snuck in that he knows there are actual valid reasons for India's unilateral action. He's just waving the UN Blue flag of cowardice as all good members are expected to do.

This is a slap fight on twitter, not an actual diplomatic crisis. I don't think India or their PM is bothered by what a 90 year old PM says. This is the same guy who appeared in a Cambridge University talk and pissed people off by shit talking Jews.

What I do love is how this guy talks about respecting the rule of law, because he is one of Malaysia's most bent politicians. He was bent for the 20+ years he was PM of Malaysia, having ministers during his rule who were given local nicknames like "Mr 5% or 10%" because of how much money they took from every government project, to laying the groundwork for a system of governance which is built on corruption. After he left in 2003, the corruption snowballed to such a point that he managed to come back 15 years later on a Donald Trump style campaign on draining the swamp and arresting corrupt individuals, including the sitting PM. When I went to Malaysia a few months ago to see relatives, they all said that his government is equally corrupt, trying to play races against each other, and taking its sweet time prosecuting the former PM.

If Pakistan can be dragged into this Twitter War, we might actually see something other than social media autism .

Both countries hate each other and have nukes .
The streetshitters and Pakis go at it like the Norks vs the rest of the world every year. It would take something 9/11 tier to make it actually pop off. Not even the Mumbai attack provoked a war and that was carried out by LeT, a Pakistani terrorist organization created and controlled by Pakistani intelligence. They do attacks in India all the time.

Indian and Malaysian social media users have not been very happy with each other of late, with people on both sides calling for their fellow countrymen to either #BoycottMalaysia or #BoycottIndia.
But that doesn’t mean that the big shots at the government level are keen to take part in the war of words. According to Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, his Indian counterpart has not expressed any displeasure with him or Malaysians.
“So far, I’ve not received any feedback. I had told (Prime Minister of India) Narendra Modi to contact me if he is unhappy or dissatisfied,” Mahathir was quoted by New Straits Times (NST) as saying at the Parliament lobby on Tuesday (Oct 8).
The brouhaha online first started when Mahathir addressed the Jammu and Kashmir issue in a United Nations General Assembly speech on September 27.

He later repeated these comments on Twitter.
“The helplessness of the world in stopping atrocities inflicted on the Rohingyas in Myanmar had reduced the regard for the resolution of the UN. Now, despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied,” he said.
“There may be reasons for this action but it is still wrong. The problem must be solved by peaceful means. India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problem. Ignoring the UN would lead to other forms of disregard for the UN and the Rule of Law.

According to NST, the Malaysian premier defended his remarks on Tuesday, saying: “We don’t give criticism to side with anyone, but we call for both parties to discuss, use arbitration or go to the court of law, not to resort to violence.”
News website The Star quoted Mahathir as saying that he had made the same remarks to India’s PM Modi when they met in Russia in September.
“My speech (at the UN general assembly) is a follow-up, where I said that we don’t want to see any violence or disputes between countries. That’s all we said,” The Star quoted him as saying.
However, Mahathir also acknowledged there were were people who were unhappy “with the mild criticisms of India”.
Earlier on the same day, Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah said the #BoycottMalaysia trend was “slowly dying off”, Free Malaysia Today reported.
Malaysia’s government “wants to be friends and trade with all countries except Israel”, he added.
According to Saifuddin, India is Malaysia’s 10th largest trading partner, with trade expected to reach up to US$15 billion.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 ― A proposed boycott of Malaysia by Indian netizens over the social media Twitter platform did not jeopardise the country’s position in the international arena as well as its bilateral relations with India, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the calls for the boycott in response to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s remark at the United Nations recently on the issue of Jammu and Kashmir have declined.

“We have conducted an analysis and I am convinced the (calls for the) boycott have declined and are no longer there today,” he said during the Ministers’ Question Time in the house.
Saifuddin was replying to a question from Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil (PH-Lembah Pantai) who wanted to know Malaysia’s stand on the proposed #BoycottMalaysia campaign.

Dr Mahathir’s remark on the Jammu and Kashmir conflict between India and Pakistan drew much response from Indian netizens on Twitter and led to them to proposing the boycott. The prime minister had called on the two countries to work together to resolve the conflict.

Replying to a supplementary question, from Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim (PAS-Kuala Terengganu), Saifuddin said Malaysia monitors the situation in Jammu and Kashmir closely and expresses its concerns to the relevant leaders.
“In certain cases, we can express ourselves forcefully and clearly but there are times when we have to tread delicately, especially now. So, there are things that we can do and cannot do,” he said.
In the case of Kashmir, he said it is a place with which Malaysia has formally no direct access except by communicating with the two sides (India and Pakistan) to prevent matters from getting more serious.
To another question, Saifuddin suggested that MPs form a special caucus to offer suggestions on improving how the United Nations deals with human rights issues. ― Bernama

India may curb Malaysian imports to punish Mahathir for UN comments – here’s what happened

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and Indian premier Narendra Modi in an earlier meeting. India is reportedly considering banning palm oil imports from Malaysia, in response to a comment Mahathir made on Jammu and Kashmir. Twitter/@narendramodi
Is a trade war looming for Malaysia?
India, Malaysia’s 10th largest trading partner, is reportedly considering restricting imports from the country to punish its prime minister for comments made at the United Nations General Assembly speech last month.
On Friday (Oct 11), Reuters reported exclusively that India was considering restricting imports of some products from the South-east Asian nation, including palm oil.
Citing unnamed government and industry sources, Reuters said the Indian government was “looking for ways to limit palm oil imports and may place restrictions on other goods from the country”.
The source of India’s fury was a comment made by Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Jammu and Kashmir – a Himalayan region at the centre of dispute between India and Pakistan – at the UN event on September 27.
Mahathir had said that “despite UN resolution on Jammu and Kashmir, the country has been invaded and occupied”.
“There may be reasons for this action but it is still wrong. The problem must be solved by peaceful means. India should work with Pakistan to resolve this problem. Ignoring the UN would lead to other forms of disregard for the UN and the Rule of Law,” he added.
The 94-year-old premier later published the same comments on his Twitter account.
Mahathir: Avoid trade war
So far, it seems that India has not made a firm decision on any possible curbs to trade with Malaysia.
Mahathir was quoted by Reuters as saying that he had not received official word from India of any trade ban.
“That is only reported, but we have not received anything official,” he reportedly said.
In a report on Sunday, state news agency Bernama also quoted the PM as saying that both countries needed to avoid any cause for trade war as it would not be beneficial for both economies.
“We will study the impact of the action taken by India. They are exporting goods to Malaysia too. It’s not just one-way trade, it’s two-way trade,” Bernama quoted him as saying.
The government had no plan to give an immediate response to Reuters’ report, he added.
India is the second-largest buyer of Malaysia’s palm oil, with 150,000 tonnes imported monthly, Bernama reported.
A ban would likely result in India substituting Malaysian palm oil with edible oils from Indonesia, Argentina and Ukraine, Reuters reported its source as saying.
Twitter storm
Mahathir’s comments on Jammu and Kashmir had earlier also sparked angry reactions on social media, with Indian social media users calling for a boycott on all things Malaysian.
After the #BoycottMalaysia became one of Twitter’s top trending hashtags in the two countries, Malaysians argued back with calls for their fellow countrymen to also boycott India.
Mahathir addressed the social media reactions on October 8, saying that India’s PM Narendra Modi had not given him any feedback about his UN speech. “I had told (Prime Minister of India) Narendra Modi to contact me if he is unhappy or dissatisfied,” he was quoted by New Straits Times (NST) as saying.
Calling the comments “mild criticisms of India”, Mahathir reportedly said that he had also brought up the Jammu and Kashmir issue to Modi when they met in Russia before the UN event.
“We don’t give criticism to side with anyone, but we call for both parties to discuss, use arbitration or go to the court of law, not to resort to violence,” he added.

I swear to god if this is what causes WW3 and results in me getting nuked while I'm having a shit I'm gonna be so pissed off.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 30 — A Malaysian minister today said a boycott of the country’s palm oil by Indian traders will likely not be prolonged as there were not enough supplies from top producer Indonesia to cover the shortfall.
Indian traders have been told to stop buying palm oil from Malaysia, the second biggest exporter of the commodity, after remarks by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Kashmir sparked anger in New Delhi.

Dr Mahathir told the UN General Assembly late last month that India had “invaded and occupied” Kashmir, a disputed Muslim-majority region also claimed by Pakistan.
The boycott of Malaysian palm oil was likely temporary as supplies from Indonesia alone were not enough to meet demand in India, Malaysia’s Economic Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, said.

“We are confident that very soon, we will be able to resolve this matter effectively,” Azmin told Parliament today.

Azmin also defended Dr Mahathir’s remarks, saying that Malaysia should be free to voice its opinions on international issues.
Dr Mahathir has said he will not retract his comments despite the palm oil boycott.
India revoked the status of its Jammu and Kashmir state in August and today moved to split the state into two territories.

Mahathir is a good and brave man and a wise statesman. Unlike the corrupt states of Saudi Arabia and the UAE that align with the Indian oppressors of the people of Kashmir, he will stand up and say what is right. On the other hand he is also very mindful of the mindfulness of maintaining good ethnic relations in his unfortunately heterogenous nation. He had to chastise the popular Dr. Zakir Naik over some intemperate remarks he made about the Hindus.
