To reverse the point of this thread somewhat, I was thinking about how the design of old, pre-smart phones was kinda garbage in a lot of ways.
I saw that cellphone fad of the '00s as annoying. Back then, one often heard annoying ring tones, and people taking calls anywhere and anytime (possibly sans indoors voice). And of course that's when "texting" started, with "selfies" following shortly after. Now I sorta miss those days in the days of "smartphones" and "social media" "culture"...

recently logged into my bank and got the usual We need to send you a one time code screen. I input the code and got another screen saying Call us to continue. TL; DR - I had to talk to an operator who gave me another automated one-time code so she could then verbally give me yet another one-time code over the phone to log me into my account.
My bet is on them buying RSA fobs, and still feel the need to justify using them.

It gives me flashbacks to a decade ago where you'd get middle-aged women calling in IT to get the OTC, and gods, they were struggling to enter 6 fucking digits and it'd just expire and you'd have to say the new one and hope their brain warmed up enough at that point.

I love my DS and 3DS. Still the coolest and best handheld console design ever. All portable consoles look the same nowadays, and you need some gay case for them. ds mirrors nokia phones where you can just put it in your pocket with your keys or whatever and it doesnt matter because plastic.

Modded mine and friend of ours the other month. Totally worth it.

I would go back to that era if it means we no longer have Instagram and influencers. Yeah it was annoying when you called someone and their dial tone is an obnoxious song. But what’s more annoying is seeing everyone glued to their smart phone in public.

I don't like how paper maps and directory maps (what is the word for that again? it's the maps displayed at places like shopping malls) are being replaced with apps. Is it really that much cheaper to run a map app?

Amazon to end support for older Kindles, prompting user outcry

I have a 2011 Kindle Touch I still use that works perfectly fine and which I use regularly. Oldest piece of tech I have by far I can say that about. This sucks, if for no other reason than that I like reading without it being backlit. :(

Amazon has told owners it will soon stop supporting older Kindle models - a move which has left some users outraged.

In emails from the tech giant, affected users were thanked for being a "longtime Kindle customer" but told devices released during or before 2012 would no longer receive updates from 20 May.

The move will mean owners of older Kindles, including its earliest models such as the Kindle Touch and some Kindle Fire tablets, will be unable to download new e-books.

It's the pinned tabs feature.
It is so annoying, damn. I searched how to disable it, and got hit with a firefox website redesign. It just looks like it's mobile only now. WTF. They are calling it a "feature". And the fact, that you can't even close an infected tab, before performing an exorcism on it, by dragging it to the right, is a "feature" too.

We used to work the ringtones out on the Piano and then program them in. So you take like a Dance Tune and then work out how it sounded on the Piano. You can then program that into a Nokia and send the ringtone to your mate. So guy in my class was ridiculously good at it.

Yeah, I feel you. I've developed an ironic love of how obnoxious things were back then. I kind of miss hearing the Black Eyed Peas everywhere I go whether it was Let's Get Retarded, I Gotta Feeling, or Boom Boom Pow playing as someone's ringtone. The Boost Mobile episode of Aqua Teen is a good time capsule from this period too

What's that one tune that Strong Bad imitates at 3:20 in sbemail #167? Pretty sure I heard that one back in the '00s. There was also this jungle-theme ringtone I heard then.

The coffee mugs I have over here run without batteries, wifi, or firmware.

☕ :smug:

(But seriously, why would you need that "smart" mug? To keep track of drinks? Why not just write a log on paper? To keep it hot? Why not just put it in a microwave instead?)
