I honestly dont know, fans actually suggested that during their Overcooked 2 stream and they did it for a bit, but then quickly dropped it saying "ye, this doesnt work and were not doing any progress"
 
There is literally nothing that makes me cringe harder than abridged series humor, I'm actually shocked to see people in this thread talking positively about it. Like, I can't knock the editing or a lot of the voice acting but the age of abridging put like an standard around dubbing anime that ruined it. I remember back in the day, there were a lot of channels that were just legitimately funny people with little to no production values at all that dubbed over anime and video games just saying whatever bullshit they wanted without really trying to tell some sort of series-long narrative, the entire point was just to make whoever was watching laugh by saying dirty words over cartoons while sort of commentating on what was happening in them or the series itself when it was funny but you weren't married to doing just that or being faithful to the series you're dubbing like you are now.

A popular Example of this would be WeeklyTubeShow's really old dubs, he's actually the only one I can think of who is still around with all of their dubs not taken down from youtube (although he tried to leave but was brought back by some unfunny faggot who declawed him and made him less funny). Alternate Reality DBZ was also pretty great but DBZA fans kept on comparing his series to TFS's and saying theirs was better which pissed him off and made him quit dubbing anime altogether. Another person who used to do this but wiped ALL of their old shit was AntFishTAS, that dude was extremely prolific when it came to dubbing over shit and a good chunk of them were funnier than his abridged stuff but I remember him making a whole lot of rape jokes so it's probably better for him that shit isn't around anymore.

Yeah, this has nothing to do with TFS anymore, I just wanted to remember a pre-LK and TFS internet where everything wasn't ruined by a need to be professional and PC.

It's not really the same at all but I guess it's kind of hard to get a real feel about what I'm talking about if you weren't there at the time. I know that they went from making it comedic and trying to be more original with it to literally just abridging the show with a sort of comedic style but they were still retelling the story of Dragon Ball Z from the very beginning. The shit I'm talking about would be like original sketches that were 5 minutes max or if it was a series then it'd be like a totally original story just using clips from a show to tell it. Also, some motherfuckers were so low-production value that they'd leave the subtitles on the videos, they didn't care.

you're talking about the era of fandubs in which people were fucking around for the hell of it, back when SSJGozar and Dub Piece were known, before LittleKuriboh and his bullshit changed ruined the game

I guess you're right. My thing is that TFS went from just taking the piss and trying to be funny with it to just trying to be on the highest level of actual dubs that they can get on YouTube. They even made their own cover of Day of Fate/Unmei no Hi. And made a metal cover of it. But You probably saw the game change more than I did.

Holy fuck, I almost forgot about Dub Piece. Do those even exist anywhere anymore? MartyMcFly23 and Beesnipe were also great but I'm not sure many people have heard of them, there were a lot of really obscure people that had their own small communities. I wish I knew about archiving back then, all of the good shit was completely lost to time. There was a period when like all anime dubs were getting copyright struck down and that's after it happening irregularly for years which made a ton of people just give up so the vids that were still up on inactive channels were taken down and entire channels just got nuked. Honestly, if people wanted to demand evidence and claim everything I'm saying is complete bullshit then they probably could but I don't really think any of my claims are implausible.

I mean, I was there from like the very beginning of youtube. I was a 12 year old who found everything I'm talking about through searching for Naruto videos, it makes sense that most people wouldn't have been around that long and I'm 25 now so I really shouldn't be giving a shit about any of this but I'm fucking autistic so I still do.

I know exactly what you mean. Early abridged was shitposting. That is the best way to describe it. Silly jokes someone spent a couple of minutes making. Random references. Quips about the show. The Shitpost era of abridging was glorious, it got you things like "LK does the first episode of the abridge but replaces every other word with vagina". It was fun in the same way hanging out in places like this is fun.

Then came the Effortposting era. When people started getting millions of views (and even worse when they started getting actual money) the abridgers decided that they are professionals now and goofy shitposting isn't good enough. Professionals make the lips match up. Professionals get scripts and voice actors and run for 30 minutes and take the time to get things right. No more "I put up a video every week because its just me watching the show then shitposting about it". Now it takes months to get it done because you got to do it right. So it lost all the charm of a shitpost with the goal to be like something you'd see on TV.

And they succeeded. High profile abridging became a scripted show like you'd see on TV. Watchable. Nothing super hilarious. Safe to make money from. A couple jokes land, some mediocre downtime between the decent jokes, some vague attempts to make the watcher feel something other than laughter that never really work out. Its just that "Mildly amuse yourself for 30 minutes" is a lot less memorable than "Laugh yourself to death for 5 minutes" that the shitposting era had. The former has always been easy to find, the latter has become more rare as everyone can make money off of their stuff pretty easily and jump into the "I'm a professional!" mindset quickly as a result.

Someone said before that this is probably an era thing, but looking at DBZA, you got typical episodes going for 10-15 minutes, the finale to the Frieza saga combining for 30 minutes, and the finale to the Cell saga combining for just over an hour, with the stuff about production being from KaiserNeko being a stickler for stuff like that. And everyone says Cell was when DBZA changed their mindset.
 
I liked both eras of DBZA. The comedy in the late first season and the second season was great. I also really liked most of the character and story changes TFS made in season three (outside of the cringey Dende/Gohan stuff and how they changed the ending to the World's Strongest).

That being said, I agree that this change in format was a major reason for the increase in production times and burnout TFS had with the series. It's unfortunate how things turned out.
 
Recovered DBZA addict here.

Episodes 1-9 (before Nappa on Earth) are painfully unfunny. Late Cell Saga episodes have cringe moments spoiling too much fun, like the time Krillin panicked about being racist against Sayians. Or the gay marriage shit at the end of one episode. When I think Dragon Ball Z, I think gay sex between a fatass and a cat or Yajirobe squirting milk from senzu bean diet.

TFS pulled the plug on Buu Saga because IMO they ran out of jokes. Check out how forced the humor can be in the last 3 episodes or so.
 
FF7MA finished yesterday, and honestly it was pretty disappointing. I thought the rest of the series had some good jokes and was overally pretty okay, but this final bit was just boring. I kept checking to see how much longer until the end, and that's never a good sign. It felt like 90% filler, 10% actually ending the plot, and none of the jokes landed. Doesn't help that it took them an entire year to put this out.
