Ape brain: WTF, TF2 IS ruined!!!111!!!
Subhuman brain: This is why digital economies suck.
Normal brain: Eh.
Big brain: Valve did this internationally to disrupt a stagnant economy and raise key sales.
Universe brain: Stuff like this is why people invest into digital economies in the first place.
Galaxy brain: Lol, Ricardo Milos hat.

remember when that very same economist was literally the economist for Greece?

If I recall properly, he wasn't the economist for Greece that'd immediately come to mind (lolcrashedureconomy now what fgt?). He resigned from Valve in order to go back to Greece and help fix what the other moron utterly screwed up.

Might be wrong, but I'm more certain than otherwise.

Pardon the lack of a citation.

It's downright nostalgic seeing people talk about TF2 again for any reason.

I myself haven't played the game in 4 and a half years.

I don't own a cellphone so I'm in 15 day trade jail so I couldn't sell my crates in time. Seeing all the idiots who bought $100+ hats getting salty is really funny though.
People spend more than one hundred bucks on virtual hats? Why? I mean I can kind of get the people that just want a funny hat desperately, but why the fuck would you buy one hoping to get your investment back? Doesn't seem any better then spending your life fortune at Las Vegas, hell, at least in Vegas you've got good shows and hookers to go to assuming you have money left.

Idk I just like pretty hats. which is why i didn't participate in the unusual unboxing because i like my unusuals already

Remember when people actually played on nucleus?
I still get shuffled to Nucleus a lot when I play KOTH mode on Casual servers and don't pick any particular map.

The price of items is determined by the marketplace which is determined by the community. You buy/get dropped crates and then you spend money to buy keys and then you open the crates to get a random item (Weapons, Hats, Miscs, Taunts) which you can then put out into the marketplace at any price you want. Items have rarity tiers and unique effects on them that make them more rare because they have a smaller percent chance of dropping from an opened crate which means there's very few of them which means whoever opened a crate and got one can list it at any price they want which means that for the longest time some really nice looking hats were unobtainable by most people not willing to spend hundreds-thousands of dollars. You could buy the regular hat in the in-game store for a couple bucks but the FANCY ones were only obtainable through crates and the marketplace.

Basically it was to make them feel good and important and so they could show off their expensive backpacks filled with unusuals to the hatless peasants and also because it's gambling and it makes the whales feel good when they get a sparkly like in a gatcha or MMO.

The smart people who uncrate unusuals usually put them up for sale on the third party trading sites for real world currency back or they just wanted a specific one to make their army man pretty and don't partake unless another one comes out that they really like and they wait to see one go for cheap or smelt weapon drops into metal and save up.

I remember when people played the game BEFORE it was free and had no hats.
It was a different time. A time you can even go back to if you have the Orange Box on Xbox.

Hey guys, what if we talked about how fun TF2 is to play instead?
