I'm honestly going to miss Team Fortress 2
Why are people acting like TF2 is gonna be shutdown within in the next week? The comics have ended, but not the game; you can expect Valve to drag it's mangled body for at least another 5 years or whenever CS2 / DOTA 2 are finally dead and gay.

Video Games are, quite literally, the careful combination of several artforms together to create an interactive experience that aims to leave an impact on the person experiencing them. I'd qualify them as art in the same way that literature which transports a reader to an entirely different world within your mind's eye is. Some games are more artsy-fartsy than others but they technically are all 'art'.
When most people think of art, they imagine marble sculptures and oil paintings. That said, few would disagree that literature, music, and film are also art forms. But for some reason video games are an exception because... you enjoy them? Just because something isn't stuffy or pretentious, that doesn't mean it isn't art.

If anything, I think video games aren't widely recognized as art because they haven't been around for very long. The first video game that wasn't created as a tech demo was made in the 50's by a nuclear physicist. Gaming didn't even become anything we recognize as an industry until the 70's. 50 years ago, give or take. For reference writing is as old as history, painting is about 30,000 years older than agriculture, music is similarly ancient, and sculpture predates human presence in the Americas by about 10 millennia. Even film is almost 150 years old (older than any living human). So, video games are still a very much nascent art form (no matter how long it feels like its been since 2007).

Beyond this, video games have also come into popularity around a time where technology is advancing at rapid, unprecedented speeds. And video games being a heavily technology based form of art evolve at a similar pace. The statue of David (1501) doesn't look all that different from the statue of Abraham Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial (1920). Now compare Half-Life (1998) to Half-Life 2 (2004). Night and fucking day. And then compare HL2 to HLA (2019). Sculpture hasn't changed in 40 thousand years. In the 15 years between HL2 and HLA they added an entirely new vector to the gameplay using technology that didn't even exist when HL2 came out. It's hard to appreciate video games (even great ones, like HL) as timeless or artful because of how ungracefully they age. Trying to make an argument that Half Life is one of the greatest games of all time to some 19 year old dweeb who's only ever played Fortnite and Warzone is like trying to argue to someone who's only ever watched Marvel movies that Citizen Kane is one of the greatest films of all time.

In other words, us chuds are just gonna have to eat shit until Barron Trump is elected president.

Its honestly because the comics feel like the end of an era, while TF2 is still going to be around, the comics just feel like a proper conclusion to things especially with how long the TF2 comics run was.

It's just a nice bit of closure. We already knew TF2 was over, but having it made official makes it easier to look fondly back at everything. Sure, it'll devolve into a bot-riddled hellscape again, inevitably, and all the other damage has already been done, but it's good to know it's truly finished, instead of Valve just tossing their hands up and fucking off like they did for the better part of a decade. And the sendoff for a beloved cast of characters was, flaws aside, still pretty nice, instead of anything cynical and cold and soulless telling us we were stupid for having been invested in it.

I still remember the day I bought the Orange Box.

I still remember the people I played TF2 with.

I still remember watching the wall in front of the spawn point turning into an art gallery of vulgar and offensive sprays.

I still remember getting screamed at for micspamming anime theme songs.

I haven't played Team Fortress 2 in years, but it's still the most played game in my Steam library.

This comic really made me happy.
24/7 spent on an international Discord of teens and young adults. 2fort_egypt til 3AM. Fuck around one hour, serious 6v6 the next.

Truly is nothing like TF2. It's the closest I got to always-online mmorpg or Discord. Most of the friends I've made are now troons and furries.

TF2 defined a whole generation of millenials. "Why are furries pyrocynical fans? Why are troons Jerma fans?". Cause the currently brainrotten young adults grew up with those making TF2 videos.
 
Except there is no other game like TF2 and there never will be another game that can replicate it. Art isn't replaceable, and watering down TF2 to a "thrill" is insulting; almost as if it were just external stimuli that could be swapped with anything else laying around. We don't treat films and other media like that in society, yet for some odd indiscernible reason video games are made the exception and you're expected to cycle through them like a raccoon scavenging for it's next disposable meal through various dumpsters.

I'm so tired of hearing people say "just move on" to a truly special game like TF2 that's been repeatedly beaten over the last 8+ years by both the company that birthed it and the community that claims to so dearly love it (usually from those that don't have a connection with TF2, how easy for them to say). How can I "move on" when I'm staring deep into it's black, mangled eyes.

Look, I understand where you're coming from because not even a year ago I held this same conviction about the game and its true value, but I've also come to the sobering realization that TF2 as a franchise is completed. My post was never meant to insinuate that you stop playing, loving, or remembering this once-in-a-lifetime game simply because a new hero shooter just rolled off the assembly line. No, my point was to explain how all the elements that made Team Fortress 2 such a phenomenal cultural or gameplay experience have reached their zenith. Some earlier than others. Now that the story has had its ending, I and so many others, have been giving the final bit of catharsis needed for us to let go of this unwavering devotion to the franchise. No matter how well-deserved it was, simply because this extreme yearning for "better times" has turned a good deal of people bitter and resentful.

I mean look at the 119 previous pages of this thread and see how many of them are just full of posts bemoaning the abysmal state of the community, content, and future direction within Valve. Are these the signs of a healthy hobby that brings as much enjoyment as it did in 2007? You don't have to hang yourself on a cross just because TF2 is a piece of art. A Lord of the Rings fan should not wait on a widow's peak, begging that Tolkien somehow return to jumpstart the exact same renaissance, experienced by him or her upon first discovering his books. It's not realistic and can prevent us from seeing other avenues of joy due to the idea we are somehow "betraying" the Author or Devs even though what they made has already done all that it set out to do in the first place.

Keep playing TF2 because I know I will until the day my heart stops pumping blood, but unfortunately the unique "thrill" I felt from roaming around an engine crafted by the finest minds of a generation, engaging in a community that once prized unbridled creativity from the best the early internet had to offer, and seeing the forging of an entirely new golden age in the video gaming industry has sadly become a distant yet pleasant memory. It can't be replicated much like the Mona Lisa can't be repainted, however, the specialness it holds for a lot of people shouldn't also make them forget that there are other pieces in the same museum that are also worthy of a few glances. You always come back to the one that first hooked you on the whole thing though, that is what Team Fortress Two is to me.

I have no regrets about allocating a decent chunk of my life to this game because if given the opportunity to do it all again, even knowing where it ends up, I would still take it in a heartbeat. "The most fun you could have online" and indeed it was.
 
The nerdy goobers that grew up playing TF2 are now all, well, grown up. Sorry guys, but we aren't the target demographic anymore. We're unc. Old and lame. We're busy starting families, buidling our careers, businesses, and have much less time for games now. We're now the obnoxious boomers that ramble about how Stairway to Heavan was the greatest song ever recorded. In a way, those boomers were right. You still see the odd High School kid wearing Led Zeppelin shirts. In the same vein, new players still get sucked into TF2, and appreciate what makes it unique. However, the cultural moments that birthed those IPs are now long gone. And with it, there is room for new art to explore different concepts.
And notice how of all this sounds similar to the conditions that led up to that golden age of gaming, time really is a circle.
 
As a filthy casual with more hours in Action Quake than TF2 - it was the closest “real”
Game to the fun and mayhem of AQ2.

And it was fun to lose. Not as fun as winning, but if the game isn’t fun to lose, why are you playing?

People act like this was the inevitable fate of the game, that we just have to accept that this is the only way it could have ended and we should just move on from this old game, but it did not have to be this way.

Imagine a development team so incompetent and clueless about their own product that they have to invite youtuber
e-celebs
to their corporate headquarters to tell them how to do their job. We're not saying that this game should be supported forever and that we need a major update every year, it's understandable for a game like this to stop receiving new content after so long. What's not fair is taking a shit all over the game and then leaving.

This game could be so, so much better so easily, things could have gone spectacularly in a timeline where the people in charge of the game were simply competent, gave a fuck and genuinely cared

As long as troons and faggots are infesting TF2, I can't and will not let go of it out of principle. It's my duty to drive them out like a pesticide.

Also, I have every right to be bitter and resentful at how shit things are. If you forget how good things used to be, you'll be susceptible to becoming cattle. Never forget what they took from you.

In an alternate timeline we got the happy ending with MYM never happening and the game ceasing being updated with a proper goodbye from Valve and them maintaining bare minimum support for it's remaining life (that is, until CS2 and DOTA 2 croak). All of the game's major problems wouldn't exist and we wouldn't be having these discussions right now, living blissfully.

...if only.

Classic TF2 had a thematic scope bubbling just beneath the surface that made you feel like a tiny cog in a huge machine, one that’s true intent was kept intentionally obscure yet unfathomably extensive. The 2fort command-center, the gravelpit deathray, the massive well launch bay. You were just the hired muscle, not paid to ask questions.

There was a kinda sense of purity to it, RED and BLU. (Also spytech and also TF Industries but who gives a fuck). The more lore the comics kept trying to shoehorn in with the brotherly conflict, and Mann co, and the administrator, kinda pulls back the curtain a little too much.

It should be noted that TheFag Show is anti-Quickplay; saying that Casual is fine, TF2 players are used to the system (stockholm syndrome) and you should just give up and accept that Valve will never do anything chud (coming from the same person that was apart of the #FixTF2 organizers whom didn't believe it would work and discouraged boycotting).

You can't hate these cocksuckers enough.
