Alongside being F2P - DOTA and CS 1.6 (both pirated, obviously) were the CODs and Halos of the slav gaming scene. Basically everyone played those (alongside something like HOMM 3), so naturally their successors pulled the less imaginative ones in.DOTA 2, along with CSGO, is a very popular game for Russians, and Peruvians are also very into DOTA as well. The big selling point of the game, is that the entire hero roster is free-to-play, compared to how other MOBAs (and other free-to-play games in general) require that you grind for currency, or bust out your credit card, to get them.
As for TF2 - any "Big Update Guyssssss!!!!" will be a shadow of what we had in the past. In the current state (balance wise, not the whole bots shitfest) the game is better than it theoretically could've been (if either some nerfs didn't happen, like with the Danger Shield, or if the compfuckers got their claws into the next update and killed all the fun gimmicks there were), and it's not bound to change. Valve's internal policy combined with TF2's ancient code and retarded community makes in unlikely for anyone to step up and take it upon themselves to iron out the kinks (even the more recent ones, like Steam inventory and trading systems just shitting themselves when working with TF2). And while there are good ideas how to fix everything - those are only speculations, nothing more. I personally love this game, but I also think that it's time for everyone to realise that the TF2 of the previous decade is gone. Not physically - you can still play (and more power to you if you still can get some enjoyement out of it), but it's just not going to be the same. Casual has the bots, community servers are either half-active or had their balls cut off by spastics like Uncle Dane with their sterile approach to game design, and the community itself is filled with whiny redditors (and even more obnoxious TF2tubers), leech-like traders and the leftover degens that didn't spread to other games. The true and honest TF2 autist is in the minority now.
I'll cut myself short and just say that the good old times are never coming back, no matter the size of the update. We can discuss what was and what might've happened, but that's about it. Thanks, and have fun.
