Grant Uchida's experience with Tanacon (which he impulsively went to because he wanted to meet his idol Shane Dawson)

Some context to why he made the trip especially after almost quitting youtube last year

Reaction to Shane giving him props for the song he wrote for him that he performed for other Tanacon visitors to keep their spirits up while everything was going to hell

Is Tana worth having a thread on (in something like Beauty Parlor)? I feel like she's a complete trainwreck at this point, between the whole iDubbz-drama last year and this shit that's still technically ongoing. I could try creating an OP if one doesn't already exist.

The funny part is, a Vidcon clone, or hell, even an anti-Vidcon event done right would probably be successful, her initial thought actually did make sense. Just don't hold it in a hotel function room. Or try to set it up in a month. I guess it would have trouble attracting corporate sponsorship, but beyond that there seems to be both an unmet demand and a willingness to spend shekels to attend such things. God knows why.

Who knew screechy fourteen year old girls had access to enough cash to drop everything and fly thousands of miles to see their favorite YouTube makeup tutorial channel in person? Not me.

Slight powerlevel here — have attended meetings at the Anaheim Marriott Suites several times and there is no way in hell 20,000 people were anywhere near there. It is a mid-size hotel about 6 blocks from the ACC where VidCon was happening. It shares a parking lot with a business office building, a popular area pizza parlor and a chain restaurant. Trying to get parking there even on a weekday is a challenge at best. The total combined meeting space (including foyers) capacity is about 1100 people. The math is easily done. Even the more realistic 5000 people (which has been kicked around) would be difficult to believe, there simply isn’t the space even for the lines. Add to that the heat wave in SoCal the past few days, it was about 90 degrees by 10 am those days. The only good part would be the excellent bar there, as a terrific vantage point where all these demented teenagers wouldn’t be able to go. I’ll bet the lobby Starbucks was doing land-office business in unicorn-tear fraps though.

There is a lot to unpack here but here are some important bits I’ve gleaned. (Highly recommended you watch this video as it’s the “official statement” by Tana and Shane on the entire event)
- video starts out with a clip that was received from Michael Weist where the team is talking about the capacity of the Marriott. Tana is shown saying fans will love it if they’re kept oppressed in the rain waiting to get in, seemingly agreeing to over capacity.
- later on we see the full version of that clip and what is said directly before is that they knew the capacity for the Marriott was 1200 pushing it but were bragging about how great it is to make people wait.
- up until now Michael Weist has been claiming that Marriott lied about the capacity and said they could handle 5k+. He has been passing the blame to Marriott and stated that he will be seeking legal restitution from Marriott for false advertising.
- Lol actually tho the contract from Marriott showed the max capacity as a flat 1000 people and Michael signed the contract so RIP lawsuit
- Tana was under the impression that 4000/5000 tickets would be free and it turns out that only 200-300 tickets were free and the rest 4800~ tickets were VIP and people paid for them. This is important because how the fuck were they able to let people fast pass to select panels or give VIP services to paying guests when 90% of the guests were VIP.
- only 25 security guards were hired at peak. For comparison, Vidcon has a 1 million dollar budget for security. Tanacon has 61,000.

From observation I really liked when Michael Weist was randomly scrolling through apps trying to look like he was doing something on the iPad. And all the cringey footage of him on segways.

I checked out the GoodTimes twitter and found a url for the claims process to get money back. What I found was a disgusting statement that totally scapegoated the failure of the event on the 15,000 people again. Inb4 this is taken down:

@CasualSeppuku @Broken Pussy @Melchett is there any way we could get a merge going from the Tanacon (event) thread? Some people there were discussing merging or making a Tana thread but this one exists.

This thread merging pleases my autism.
On topic, though- imagine being so god damned narcissistic that you film yourself saying how great it would be to make people stand outside and wait. That they'll just LOVE feeling oppressed. (Which, to be fair. A lot of people on tumblr DO like being oppressed. but we all know that's not what Tana means) And then still be exceptional enough to claim that you're a victim.
Tana does that shit all the time. She filmed herself screaming "nigger" at people. She filmed herself telling idubbbz to break both his legs. )And then cried that she had no idea what she did wrong to idubbbz) She filmed herself making up blatant shit about the "say nigger" incident.
At least we can take comfort in that Tana tanked her own career with her own narc exceptionalism.

Somehow what shocks me the most is she keeps posting on Twitter how lucky she is to have Shane as a friend and how happy she is that these videos are being made. She really truly seems to think this series makes her look good. It’s wild.

Some of these posts remind me of how annoying it is when Youtubers make their videos over 20 minutes long. It's to get more money, right? I get why Shane's doing it. He has to put tons of information in. But the rest, no.

That’s only true if people actually watch through the ad clusters. If you click off halfway through then they’ve only been paid for those sections.
Monetization is a mess after Logan Paul in Japan and they’ve really tightened the grip on what is monetizable. This means lots of videos creators would make money on simply make none. Many of Tana and other big creators will post videos despite knowing it will not be monetized as a “haha lol fuck the system” thing. There’s a lot of humor and memes on this.

Particularly among the pewdiepie videos. He often tries to hit a goal of 10 minutes to get monetized. It’s cringey there because pewdiepie is a prolific video maker and also someone who barely has content for any of the regular vids he does. He is a good example for stretching time for monetization. If he’s going over fan submitted content or reviewing memes he will leave a clip or meme to repeat 3-10 times more than it needed to be repeated to time stretch.

A lot of you tubers straight up do it because they don’t edit or watch shit before posting. Trisha Paytas is an example of this. She’s notorious for not editing at all and leaving full minutes of teeth sucking or silence occur.

I have to wonder if Shane is maybe done with her. He's upset that all these people came out to Tancon and got scammed. I wonder if more and more information that comes out, he's getting angrier at Tana's lies.
He may also be overly forgiving. He's super nice and I know that a lot of the time Shane is too nice.

That makes sense. This kind of stuff is odd because in most of these Youtube videos it's seriously 20 minutes of rambling that can be edited down to half the time.

Oh definitely. He cut the WORST part of Michael Weist’s footage we have seen to date into the beginning and it set the mood for a lot.

I remember when I saw Shane’s livestream where he came out with that he thought it was a conspiracy and there were no free tickets I thought that was a HUGE claim to lay down.

I feel like it’s kind of fucky how Shane changed the narrative, though. We heard 15,000 20,000 over and over until Shane dropped the bomb it didn’t look like more than 4K. The same footage of the crowd in line from the hotel higher floors was used by others (Philip defranco notably) to “show how it was 20,000” to be used again by Shane in his videos held next to a super bowl image showing really what 20,000 looks like.

Then next day the police come out with a statement on the numbers?

We need some hard autismo to do some manual counts of the footage and do some estimation.

Obviously none of this changes the fact that they oversold for the venue intentionally and that was FUCKED. But I think people should also be looking at how Shane has shaped the narrative because it seems like Anaheim can’t get fucking any actual data based numbers on attendees.

Sounds like both parties are throwing each other under the bus. They're both at fault here.

I was annoyed with Shane's continued biased watching part 3 until he added the "1 week later" clip. His deeper digging into the actual contracts and figures was appreciative. And he stated it was both Tana's and Weist's fuck ups.

I still can't get over the clips of Tana saying it would be cool to have people waiting outside to get in. Okay some people may enjoy that, but would the majority of people be okay with that? In the heat? In the middle of the summer? And a large chunk of her fanbase are children?

She may not have known exactly how everything would have played out, but she cosigned on so much shit and never followed through with FINAL checks behind Weist.
