I think some people don't want to work while waiting for their disability benefits to be approved because it could "disproof" their mental illlness but for what I have read, the benefits for people with autism is to help them but still expect people to get a job since is not enough for living.

It depends on what type of autism a person has, and if the diagnosis includes physical disabiltiies as well (such as n average aspie can usually function and deal with people enough to flip burgers, but someone on the other end of the autism sliding scale needs a 24/7 caretaker because they can only quote movies and can't even hold a sharpie properly). Then there's different state requirements.
And if you're on disability for physical issues only then they expect people to retrain and get OT or PT, and at least work part time at some point. I forget exactly the requirements for that one, but it's a lot stricter.
In general though, for a lot of cases if someone works while waiting for a decision, it actually shows the SSA that you're fit enough to work so you don't need benefits.
