China would have had no way to predict it. That said however, April is in the invasion window, so they could conceivably do it if they had prepared ahead of time, even if only for a drill.
Biden and Pooh Bear just had a phone call the other day. Wonder if the old man's just gonna let him take it, treaties be damned.

Most of the damage was confined to Hualien, the furthest city from Mainland China.
Unless Japan spontaneously decides to invade, Taiwan is no more at risk than usual.

Holy crap, that was a strong earthquake. Really puts in perspective how little power humanity has compared to the Earth.

The 9.0 magnitude earthquake that struck Japan back in 2011 released much, much more energy than Hiroshima did.

Holy shit that is one awful ass earthquake, small power level I lived trough a pretty bad earthquake myself but it was nothing compared to the videos I'm seeing of this situation. Its honestly impressive the destruction nature can sometimes cause.
I don't think China is retarded/scummy enough to attempt an outright invasion on Taiwan,

That was my first thought, but I don't think this will kickstart the Chinese invasion. Naval landings take months (years) of planning, and troops/equipment/vehicles need to be prepared well in advance for an assault.

If the PRC were to invade Taiwan tomorrow, it's either the most fortunate eve of attack in history, or a rushed job.
Well tomorrow is a holiday. But locals don't seem too stressed about it.

Taiwan now seems defenseless if China invades.
Just because a few buildings clapsed in Taipei doesn't mean that all their costal defences and airforce is useless too.

I also experienced an earthquake, it was in Japan and was powerful enough to make some rides closed off for maintenance.

Taipei schools closed today. Also my friend in Taipei said that the MRT lines are damaged too.

What about underground nuclear test for the memes

That borehole they were digging was actually a serpentine drill to taiwan its all connected

How on earth does Pat have enough money left for a trip to Taiwan after paying quasi over 80 grand?!

My main two worries here:
1) How badly has this earthquake affected the TSMC fab?
2) If China actually invades Taiwan during this, boy will there be a massive shitfest around TSMC, and the fact that the entire West relies on it, and has all their design docs there. Intel, Nvidia, AMD, Qualcomm, Apple, absolutely every single semiconductor manufacturer relies on TSMC to make their shit, and the consequences of TSMC going out of order/getting taken over by China are incomprehensible.

That's exactly what I'm thinking too, given that they produce 50% of the world's microchips overall.

And TSMC produce pretty much all of Nvidia's advanced gpu chips.

/sarcasm/
Let's take a moment to give thanks for foreign government semiconductor subsidies and the elimination of US and European protective tariffs, for the steady march of chip manufacturing to Asia.
