I'm not surprised that this is happening. This is what happens when you stop gatekeeping and try to appeal to normies. I say this from having played with some people who were doing their masters in "game design" at a major university. This black guy would go on and on about how orcs were racist because they were obviously based off of black people and elves were racist because they were based off of Asians. Now, if you were a real nerd you'd know that none of this was true at all. Which always brings me back to this diagram (except replace dudebros and girls with rabid SJWs):

So yeah, gentrification. It looks something like this:
- Geek Property gets noticed by the mainstream and becomes popular.
- Locusts talk up how cool the Geek Property is, but also how it's such a shame that it comes with Undesirables occupying it.
- Undesirables get shamed and harassed out of the Geek Property by the Locusts.
- Geek Property owner bends the knee to the Locusts because they think it will increase profit and/or gets infested by Locusts, remakes Geek Property to appeal to Locust values while letting the things that made the Geek Property good in the first place rot.
- The Locusts find some other new Geek Property to infest and consume.
This is what happens in video games. An intellectual property gets sanitized into something more palatable for the Locusts, and while it may look good in the trailers and on the Locust's "news" sites, the game itself is garbage.
