Any good actually plausble "RPG horror" stories sites out there? The ones I've seen on major mainstream sites like YT and reddit just feel beyond "and everyone clapped" levels for the most part, can't really get a chuckle out of it.

Thinking about running a Deadlands campaign. I have familiarity with Savage Worlds so I figured I'd just grab Deadlands Reloaded, but I've heard the old system was also decent.
 
The old Deadlands overly relied on its gimmick mechanics with playing cards, it resulted in combats lasting f o r e v e r. Savage Worlds significantly streamlines things, so I recommend that version.

Dirty Secrets of the Black Hand is when you get down to it, playable. This is mostly because the storyteller system is a solid enough foundation that if you strip out the awful fluff of this book, the crunch isn’t extremely terrible.

Still, just play V20 or Requiem instead. Early White Wolf suffers badly from 90’s spirit in some areas.

Trust me I won’t be as generous about Changing Breeds or anything from Beast.

Nope, because the only good things in it, the Nagaraja, the Old Clan Tzimisce, and their Koldunic Sorcery, make up like less than 5% of the book. The rest is fanfic made by a crap writer who ran away with his paycheck and failed to do the actual mission of the book: be a prototype Beast 20 years early. Plus given one of my favorite clans to play (Tzimisce) get done dirty in this book, it's automatically crap.

The logic you have is like enjoying eating a bag of rabbit shit because the last three pieces were high quality chocolate. Garbage for me.
 
That's the thing with DSotBH, some good ideas with a big mess. Speaking of polarizing WoD books, what's your feelings on Charnel Houses of Europe: The Shoah? I've noticed people either like it for it's respectful and well-written treatment of the subject matter (the Holocaust) or it's one of their least favorites because they think it should've never been made into a gaming supplement. I'm in the camp of the people who liked the book.

I've always wanted to play old clan but the chance has never really emerged. Frankly I actually a like them a little better than the core clan since the evil is a little more understated, plus playing someone simular to Dracula sounds immensly fun.

EDIt-anyone have any experiance in playing rare classes in WoD or other games?

I got Genesys and the Realms of Tenniroth supplement recently and ran it for my friends.

It's pretty much the generic fantasy version of the Fantasy Flight Star Wars system, which is great because I love that system but don't want to do fucking star wars.

It's pretty rules light and the dice allow for a lot of narrative direction. Easy to custom kit out stuff. I've been reading a lot of Berserk lately so I want to do some twisted dark fantasy stuff with it.

Charnel Houses is a very good book: it doesn’t try and whitewash what happened away, and approached the topic of the Holocaust in a very respectful and well researched manner. Even if it isn’t something that will likely come up in a game, its certainly something that does not harm the game through its existence. Compare that to Dirty Secrets, which did damage that needed to be dealt with via nuclear fire.

EDIT: also Charnel Houses basically retconned the Nazi Vampire stuff from Berlin By Night. Now that’s a book that might also warrant some looking at.

Quick question here, but what system would you guys recommend for a Resident Evil campaign? I'm going to be running a small RE campaign for some friends of mine IRL.

To be more specific, I'm talking about the setting and style of the "Survival Horror" entries like the original PS1 trilogy, Code Veronica, and the remakes as opposed to the "Action Horror" style of RE4-RE6.

I'm thinking you could use the basic mortals rules for New World of Darkness, but that system honestly doesn't have the best combat rules, which can be either a boon to the survival horror aspect or it could be a drawback depending on how my players react to it, since most of their experience is with D&D 5E and Pathfinder.

I've also considered a generic system like GURPS or Big Eyes Small Mouth.

What I might recommend is the Warhammer Fantasy ruleset, the second edition one before it got screwed up. It's straightforward, brutal, and has mechanics for corruption, horror, and insaniy. If you want something that's not pulling punches about how fucked people are in a survival horror scenario, it's a fair fit.

I'll definitely check out Warhammer Fantasy, but one of the reasons why I'm considering NWoD or a generic system is because the campaign is set in the Resident Evil universe, so I'd like to already have rules to cover modern technology and firearms (I know the Warhammer Fantasy setting has old-school black powder guns, but it's not the same) although I will keep an eye out for Warhammer Fantasy 2E and see if it's going for a decent price on Amazon.
 
Don't know if this is the place to post something like this. It's probably not but I' willing to take that risk to get a second opinion. I guess this is what Reddit calls a D&D "Horror" story.

A few things to know ahead of time:
This is from 5e.
I did run this character by the DM ahead of time and specifically asked him if he would be okay with me playing this character. At the time he seemed okay with it.

I want to preface this story by saying that the Dungeon Master I am about to talk
about is still fairly new to being a DM and while I think the way he handled things
was less than perfect to say the least I still have a lot of respect for this
person and wish him the best. He has a habit of being overly competetive and
getting incredibly upset if he loses among a few other odd quirks but really he's
a great guy. So anyways the campaign starts off swimmingly enough I suppose for a
first timer. The DM had made us an incredible looking map to explore and even
created his own smallish pantheon of Gods and Godesses, the later of which I soon
discovered where just a thinly veiled excuse to build his own waifus. He claimed
that he wanted each of our characters to have a backstory that integrated them into
the setting. However I soon came to realize that he hadn't really written much
history for the world yet when I decided to play a six-hundred year old Eladrin
soldier. In fact, it quickly became apparent that "integrating your character
into the world" just meant "give me a relative or something valuable to hold
hostage and or kill to create cheap drama". I of course tried to reason with him as
the character in question theoretically had a lot at stake in this world in a more
general sense considering her age. I explained to the DM that she(My Character) had
through the many years lost many friends including but not limited to soldiers to
whom she considered a sort of extended family to war and old age. I really played
upon the horrors of war giving her many deep seeded regrets along with a seemingly
cold yet fierce sort of countenance. Basically I put a lot of work into her
backstory only for the DM to claim that I gave him nothing to work with. Anyways we
got past that argument for a time and proceeded into the game proper upon which
point I found the DM was targeting me hard for playing a clever tactitian and
keeping mostly to the trees when possible while the party traveled along the
ground. Now I was doing this because I was playing an arcane archer, providing
ranged support to the group while keeping at a safe distance so as to keep
myself healthy should I need to run in and evacuate fallen teammates. He would
later admit to adding extra enemies to areas they weren't supposed to be out of
spite among other things like ensuring an enemy would attack my character even
if it had to go out of it's way and to it's own detriment. A few examples are:
A giant contrictor who let the party pass because I was bringing up the rear and
then attacked only me, eight bandits who all targeted me at once and not any of
my teammates, and my personal favorite the snake that appeared mid battle on the
very branch I had chosen to climb to because I made a tactical retreat into a tree
and the DM didn't like that. Things continued like this for a while but I never
faltered which made the DM furious. How dare I be good at a game. Eventually we
make it to a city in the forest and I immediately notice that something about the
people is off and determine along with the party that brainwashing is afoot. With
this in mind I begin tailoring all my actions towards subtly gaining the trust of
the Queen who it turns out is a very obvious villian trying to play innocent.
Turns out she's a snake lady(Super original bro) and we eventually fight her
ending in the party surviving as I surrender in exchange for their safety and
losing an arm as part of that deal. So cut to the torture scene that I quickly
talk my way out of because I had sent my familiar(From Magic Intiate) back to
the main city with an encrypted letter and our coordinates. I use this as a
bargaining chip and find out a lot about snake lady's past and all that while
making sure she knows she's been outsmarted. Basically I gain her trust and
fake swearing myself to her after recalling my familiar and destroying it in
front of her... only for her to use all of her Geas' on me to make sure I wasn't
tricking her, because she was that fucking paranoid at that point. If I had been
allowed to still play after that session I would have killed her in her sleep that
night, but the DM was so angry that I was going to kill his snake waifu that he
practically forced me to leave the group.

DM got outsmarted and gets mad about it.

I know less than dick about D&D. Are eladrin archers some insanely broken bullshit, or from some asspull supplement that spoil the game for other players? Either way, if the DM okays it, it's in.

From the top of my sleep deprived head - five fucking hundred years ago your dudeman was campaigning in Randomcountrystan, he was in a besieged city. Some man was found hoarding food while everyone was starving, his house was stormed by an angry mob. Your PC resolved it in some manner - hanged the hoarder, flogged the mob, confiscated the food for the army - you name it. 70 years later you wander back to the same city and reap what you've sown.
Or you gave your hip flask full of water to a merchant whose camel died when he was crossing the desert, along with your name when he asked for it. The flask became a family heirloom and you meet his descendants 300 years later.
Or half a goddamn millenium ago your dude was a sorry ass spearman straight out of boot camp, and his unit by a stroke of luck managed not to break under a heavy cavalry charge, turning the tide of a battle, with that even marking the end of one empire and the rise of another, with all the implications that carries.
If anything he could've complained that he's spoiled for choice.

Even discounting all of that - any GM that has this 'me vs them' mentality is shit. When you run a game, you're a facilitator, not an opponent.

Nwod would work fine I think. Hunter: the Vigil seems especially suited to your purposes. If you're going for a more low tier setting, let them be part of compacts like Network Zero or Null Mysterious. Task Force VALKYRIE if you want to give them access to big guns and high tech weaponry.

Combat plays just fine. I've DM'ed WoD for years and years. The only setback might be bringing in a group that's only familiar with D&D or other "kick in the door" kind of tabletop games. Combat is much more brutal in WoD, characters aren't walking sacks of hit points that can be healed up willy nilly. That would play well into the survival horror aspect. Once the players get acclimated to it and we@n themselves off D&D, it should be smooth sailing.
