My copy of the second edition of the Ninja Burger RPG came today. So far, it looks really good. Other than that, I've been reading Convention Book: Progenitors and though I'm halfway through, I find myself respecting them and how they've changed since their earlier days.

I know I've sperged enough about OSR RPG's in this thread, but I wonder who else here likes old-school D&D or retro-clones thereof?

I'm well aware that most of these games are before my time, but I find the old RPG's of the 1970's and 1980's to be fascinating. I love TSR-era D&D and I'm so glad that my dad gave me his old copies of the AD&D rulebooks (he had both the First Edition and Second Edition AD&D stuff), it's really cool.

I still like 3.5/Pathfinder and 5E is awesome, but AD&D and OD&D/Basic D&D and their numerous retro-clones have a certain charm to them that I can't fully quantify.

Also, I'm wanting to run a play-by-forum RPG campaign and I'm wondering if anyone is interested. I'll probably have to use one of those free forum type programs to make my own site for the game, but I've narrowed the campaign ideas to two choices.

One is a Vampire: The Masquerade game set in 1990's Chicago using the 20th Anniversary Edition rules. I've spoken with Yaoi Huntress Earth about this, who has expressed some interest, so that's good. I need at least two to three more people to start up.

The second idea is an old-school D&D game using the Basic Fantasy rules (which can be legally downloaded for free off the Basic Fantasy RPG's official website). It would be a sandbox-styled game set in a Holy Roman Empire-inspired setting with both Medieval and Renaissance elements in terms of tech levels.

I'd be up for PBP if you're asking us specifically. I don't know the rules to either of those settings, but I figure I could learn of no-one else wants to join you.

I am asking my fellow Kiwis specifically, yes. Glad to have you on board.

If I'm working with people new to the rules, I'd go with Basic Fantasy because you can legally download the PDF for free off the official website.

Here's the website....

Looks pretty simple so far, which is fine.

I'm not sure which class I'd WANT to be as they're more balanced than some other settings.

Then again, I might bugger up my ability score rolls. That'll have to wait 'till we know what's even happening game-wise.

For now, we're going to be using just the Basic Fantasy core rulebook. I may add in the supplemental stuff later as the game progresses.

The setting so far is a fantasy version of the Holy Roman Empire at an unspecified point between the 12th and 17th Centuries CE (I may even just make the setting "Earth but with magic and monsters" for simplicity's sake) and I'm thinking Humans will be the only playable race for now (I may make Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings playable on a case-by-case basis). But keep in mind that this game is still in the early stages of planning and it will be an open sandbox campaign heavily driven by player actions.

Okie doke.

I'll roll up a couple of things and see how it goes.

I've been wanting to play a Vampire game for quite a while. Also been looking into a Mutants and Masterminds 3rd Edition or a Warhammer 40k RPG. Though Warhammer 40k games don't seem to last too long because you're too squishy.

I might have two sub-boards on my upcoming site. One for the Basic Fantasy/D&D game and one for the Vampire game. Not sure yet.

I am in the process of creating a ProBoards website for my role-plays. So far, I'm making the guidelines for an old-school D&D game using Basic Fantasy, but I will also create a sub-board for the Vampire campaign as well.

Having literally created the actual site less than an hour ago, I'm the only one there. I'll PM you the link. Anyone else interested in joining my RPG games, feel free to PM me for directions to the site.

Be forewarned, I have never created a forum before, so it may look a little amateurish and is very much a work-in-progress.

Honestly, you aren't that squishy in those games. You have a body and armor pool that completely soaks away damage, and depending on your selected class can actually laugh at some weapons even hoping to do damage... while staying out of cover. You legit just need to not play stupid and you'll be fine.

Mutants and Masterminds is a pretty fun system, a fun system that i accidentally made an UA character for apperently

Never actually played Mutants & Masterminds, but I have heard good things about it.

M&M is a fun system and has recently got 3rd party support over the past three years now. Easy to break a character and I find that the DC Adventures M&M game DC characters just aren't fair because they use more points for their characters than you get (Batman for instance)

Here’s a new game that just crossed my dash. It’s still in alpha, but the authors are already trying to get five bucks for it. Guess Kickstarter isn’t what it used to be these days.

For generations, your people you have suffered. Your elders recount tales of hardship and hate. The young look to their futures with fear and despair. The Dominant Society controls all of the levers of power, creating laws that protect their interests above yours. Wealth and influence is held only by a few in the dominant Society, to use as they see fit. Your people are left only with silenced voices and crushed dreams. The world seems set against you.

You come from one of the marginalized communities, who suffer at the hands of the Dominant Society. You might be one of the Burdened, your mind or bodies shaped by trauma and misfortune. Perhaps you are one the Forsaken, deemed inferior by virtue of your sex or the passions of your heart. Are you Foreign, set apart by your ethnicity, faith, or culture? Were your people Native to these lands, before the occupation? Each of these communities cries for justice, for opportunity, and for peace.

Few souls have stood fast against injustice and oppression. Shaped by your traditions and resolve, you have learned to wield the Secret Fire of the magi. You are one of The Wise, who might draw upon mighty sorceries and clever enchantments. You hold the keys to the universe, and will seize respect for your people. You will not be quiet. You will not be still. You will not comply.

Unfortunately, you have other struggles beyond liberation. There are whispers of dark things lurking on the far frontier. The Doom threatens us all, the powerful and the oppressed alike. Only the Secret Fire can keep them at bay, burning away their corruption and shattering their terrible forms. The Wise are given a grudging respect, and a measure of social power, by virtue of fight against this distant foe. This struggle will temper you and teach you to master your magics.

Circles of Power is a game about individuals who have suffered oppressions, and have gained magic to balance the karmic scales. In this game, you play one of the Wise who arise from marginalized communities. You cast your spells to ward off the Doom and to earn valuable favors from the Society. You spend that favor to Take a Stand against the Society to protect your communities from oppression and violence. The struggle for justice and freedom will teach you the lessons you need to learn, to master your spells.

Note: This is a preliminary edition of the game, referred to as an Ashcan. While it is playable and engaging, there are still some rough edges. I am currently spending time, trying to refine the content and ensure that it is fully respectful of the various marginalized communities it focusses on.

Too subtle?
I'd post come content to make fun of, but I'm not spending money on these fools.

Tumblr: The Triggering.
Someone needs to run a game of this on here so we can make fun of it.

Well give that so many funded Kickstarters are just scams, even in the gaming community, I wouldn't fund anything on there. There are still a few 3pp Pathfinder books I'm waiting for that should have already come out. Hell, the Cthulhu kickstarter should have been sent out in December.

I so want to make an OSR-style old-school D&D parody campaign based on Sonic The Hedgehog and its rather infamous fandom.

The PC's are all Sonic OC's living in a pseudo-medieval fantasy world and aesthetically, the game would be similar to the early years of Dungeons & Dragons. I would probably use OD&D or a clone thereof (like Swords & Wizardry or Microlite74 if I want to keep it rules-light and simple). The whole thing is rather tongue-in-cheek and makes fun of both Sonic's horrid fandom as well as some of the lolcow types in the RPG community such as Chris A. Fields, Satyros Brucato, and most of the userbase at RPG.net

Of course, since this is a joke game, it'd probably be just a one-shot game.

On another less autistic subject, if one were to run a tabletop RPG where the characters play little green Army Men (similar to Toy Story or the old Army Men video games for the original PlayStation), what system would work best?
