4e Shadowrun is my pick, though purists of the 80s retro vibe took umbrage at its lack of elves plugging keyboards into their foreheads. They tried to make a more realistic wireless computing future to get the deckers and riggers actually with the team and not running a separate minigame for half the night. Which I consider admirable, but it is a hefty departure from 1st-3rd editions, so if you're fixated on the old-school, 3rd edition is the one to go for.

Are talking mechanics or setting for Shadowrun? Because if it's timeframe setting I'd say right up until the end of 2nd edition before the comet and otaku shit made it a furfag gateway.

This one is making the rounds in one of the communities I'm in. I meant to post it yesterday but Kickstarter was not agreeing with my VPN. Anyway, strap in. This will be a long one.

Man, that's a lot of "WE'RE NATIVES, TRUST US!" all over the page.

Well, this could be interesting. I wonder how it's going to--

View attachment 1968030

It's just Storyteller. It's literally just fucking Native American Storyteller.

There we go, if you're a non-native, you're strongly advised to fuck off an not use some options in the book, even though you're supposed to all be roleplaying native characters.

Do these people understand the concept of "roleplaying"? Also, there are no non-native characters in the setting, since it was "not colonized". So what do you do if you're a non-native playing that game? Just... suck it up and not play some things? That sounds like so much fun, having my options in a game limited by my ancestry!

View attachment 1968036

A diverse team! Including the absolutely-traditional-not-created-in-the-late-80s native tranny term, the "two spirit". Their ancestors would be so proud!

This is at the end. Separate but equal, indeed.

These guys are funded over 10 times over. I fully expect the product to come out, but I also fully expect drama. There are great odds of he-said-she-said drama about a non-native team member claiming to be native. What do you guys think?
Interesting update about Coyote and Crow: They now have to beg wypipo to buy their game.

An Important Message From Connor

Hey folks. I’ve got something important to talk about. This has come up in a few different channels, worded in a few different ways, but I got an email today that made me realize that I really need to fully address this situation once and for all. So, this post is directed specifically at people who are feeling squeamish about playing Coyote & Crow.

WHITE PEOPLE: YOU CAN PLAY COYOTE & CROW

FFS.

Okay, let me get into this. First, if you’re concerned that you shouldn’t be playing Coyote & Crow, it’s likely that you’re a white person and you’re worried that playing this game constitutes some form of cultural appropriation or that you would somehow misrepresent Indigenous people during your time playing the game.

I get that instinct. It likely comes from the fact that you’re trying to be an ally to Indigenous folks, probably to POC in general. You’re being “respectful.”

Except – you’re not. You’re not being respectful when you refuse to play Coyote & Crow for that reason. You’re not being an ally. You’re being a shitty person and frankly, you’re being a little racist. Feel free to gasp and fan yourself if you need to. When you’ve finished, please read on.

If you’re not Thai, do you not go to Thai restaurants because that would be appropriation? If you’re not Mexican, do you not bring home Mexican food? If I invited you into my house to have some Indian tacos, would you not eat them because that would be disrespectful? “But Connor, food isn’t the same. I’m just eating the food. Pretending to be Indigenous in a roleplaying game isn’t the same thing.”

That’s some bullshit and here’s why (and I can’t believe I have to explain this to so many of you). There’s a difference between taking and giving. Taking something is when you, the taker, impose your desires and wants on someone else. You remove something from someone’s possession and make it your own. It’s at the core of colonizing. It’s rampant in our modern American culture to this day. It’s part of what I’m pushing back against in the game industry. Coyote & Crow is a reaction to taking.

Giving is the opposite. Giving is surrendering something voluntarily to others. It’s an offering. It’s sharing. More than two dozen Native folks worked on Coyote & Crow (and a ton of great non-Native allies too) and we worked to offer you all something – a vision of a world without colonialism and the people that live in that world. They’re fictional people who live in a fictional world. No one at Coyote & Crow inserted direct, 1:1, real world Indigenous cultures into the game. Inspired by? Sure. But just as often as not, it’s extrapolation, speculation. Playing Coyote & Crow is to pretending to be Indigenous the same way playing a human in a Star Wars RPG is pretending to be from Earth.

We went out of our way throughout the book to call out areas that might be sensitive to Native or non-Native players and make sure they had clear direction. The Skill Ceremony is a great example. But we also devoted four pages at the beginning of the book, directly addressing non-Native players and Native players, giving them guidance on how to best approach the game. I’m going to post those here in JPG format for your direct perusal.

Honestly, though, we shouldn’t need those four pages. Everything I wrote above is just common sense to me. But let’s get back to the racism. Hooray, you don’t want to be racist. Good goal. But you know what doesn’t help anyone in that scenario? Avoiding engagement with other cultures. Here’s the brutal truth about Coyote & Crow. If the same group of Indigenous people who made it, instead made a game called Space Cats where you play space pirate cats who fight against the evil Canine Empire, you’d probably feel like you were okay to play that game, right? But the reality is, THAT is still an Indigenous game too. Because it was made by Indigenous creators. The difference is that you feel scared to engage with another culture, even when it’s literally being offered up to you in a safe format by that very culture. That need to distance yourself from Indigenous folks or POC? Sure, go ahead and call it “respect” if you want, but what I see is avoidance.

Look, if you don’t want to play C&C because you’re not into science fantasy or you think the rules are too crunchy, or you don’t like d12s or alternate history RPGs aren’t your thing – go on with your bad self. You do you. But if the only thing holding you back is that don’t feel “comfortable” pretending to be a person with browner skin than you? Even when Indigenous folks are literally trying to offer you the game? Then you’re the problem. Sort your shit.

And if you still can’t get past it? Just buy our game because you’re an “ally” and then put it on your shelf and never play it. That works too.

TL, DR: Gimme your money, you racists!

You know reading that whole spiel about fuck you you don't have the right to say know to our shit product had me looking up a quote from Marx...Groucho not the well....about how he wouldn't want to be in a club that would have him as a member and I found this: “I, not events, have the power to make me happy or unhappy today. I can choose which it shall be. Yesterday is dead, tomorrow hasn't arrived yet. I have just one day, today, and I'm going to be happy in it.” the TLDR there is fuck you, fuck your shitty game made by a bunch of one drops and fuck Iron Eyes Cody.
Double TLDR: Tell you what send that shit down to some res's I've seen and tell the people that live there how much money you got to make and tell me who's the real devil it ain't whitey who you guilted into believing they were on horseback with their allies from the next wigwam over that your tribe was at war with for generations.

These guys got a million dollars out of the project and their entire shtick was "we so native". What the fuck do they care? Did they really mismanage their shit so hard they actually have to sell copies instead of just coasting on the Kickstarter money like everybody else does?

Also, their average donation is $66. Looks like these motherfuckers got banked by some pretty big whales.

@Wallace My favourite part from that rant

Bwahahahaahahahahahah! Oh no, we're not playing that game anymore. Anything inspired by anything is that culture. It gets it wrong then you're exploiting them. It gets it right only that culture can play it end of. Those are the current rules for the people that would buy this game, enjoy.

I am genuinely curious about how much dodginess is in there. As the project notes it was funded in 45 minutes and closed back in April 2021. A post 1year and 4 months later demanding white people buy their rpg stinks of desperation. Looking at it things have shipped so I am baffled what it could be aside possible from people involved with creating it not receiving their money and moving on to the legal stages of getting it.

So after crying for years how we're not allowed to mess with crap from nonwhite folks now they're made we LISTENED? Good lord, this is exhausting. Can we just put these idiots on an island somewhere?

Uh no you mayo monkey colonizer, you're either supposed to bend over and flagellate yourself until one of your ancestors can take over on themselves or consoom the product and not actually play and just put it on your shelf and say what a good ally am I.

It's been about a year and four months since the funding phase ended. With 22 "official" members for the project plus however many non-listed people to pay, plus a hard copy option that a good amount of people seem to have gone for, I could see them going through all that money legit.

If that's the case, ggwp you idiots. You broke even and made no profit. Welcome to living hand-to-mouth.

The updates section also confirms their donation plans haver allegedly gone awry due to someone they hired this year who fucked off very quickly. Which might be a factor.

Also this is the current first comment in the comments. I love it.

Hey C&C folks!

I’ve pored through the tome of awesomeness you sent me. I love it to pieces! As a non-native North American, I’m reveling in the culture-celebrating feel of the art and narrative.

When I watched Black Panther and saw Wakanda for the first time, I wept at the beauty of what could have been were it not for violence and colonization. Coyote & Crow gave me the same reaction about my home continent. A thousand thanks!

@Wallace

Quote-bugged son but that is amazing.

My favorite part is at the end when they let the mask slip.

Just buy our game because you’re an “ally” and then put it on your shelf and never play it. That works too.
"Just subsidize our existence! You owe us! Our product is so shit, we don't care if you play it if we get paid"

But if they buy the book... they have to print it and ship it. That's a lot of dead trees and fuel burned. Think of the carbon! Think of destruction to the Great Spirit's world you are advocating! Oh right none of that shit matters when it means they get paid.

These Timber-niggers miss the point in their cooking analogy that if I got a Thai cook book, made a recipe in it, and posted the results anywhere, these redskins would amoung the baying hordes crying for my head for cultural appropriation - especially if god forbid I tune the recipe to my/family's tastes.

Also I'm not against alternate histories, but I am against them when the alternative is as retarded as C&C's pitch. The indians had been skinning each other alive for like 12,000 years. The Eyptians were building pyramids while the Indians were... well, they were killing and eating the ORGINAL inhabitants of North America, but also still wrestling with "shitting in holes and not just where ever" technology. Whitey was able to take over the Aztecs with 300 guys because all the tribes hated each other. The Aztecs then happily picked up their glass-infused clubs to go fuck up the Maya.
Motezuma's grandson was made a Spainish noble.

The best alternative history you can go for is after the Indians steal Spanish horses is Comanche Genghis Khan unites or kills every redskin in North and South America and steals all technology from the Spanish.
Or that actual Genghis Khan takes over Japan, uses Japan as a base to land in North America and the indians are forcibly mongoled into the 1400's from the 14000BC.

Mechanics. I’m only allowing base races and technomancers/otakus don’t exist.

I would love to know how many people actually played even an one-shot session in that setting since it was released.

I'm pretty sure I could count the number of GMs actually running that book in the Year of Our Lord 2022 on the fingers of one head.

I played a lot of 2E back in the day but you really really gotta elide over the decking stuff. Otherwise people will fucking neck themselves out of boredom at the table (and this includes the decker.)

You can kinda write it into the run so the decker's opening doors and turning off alarms while you work your way through the place.

So the white people LARPing as Native Americans are pissed that their already stupidly successful game is not more successful huh. Even though they've done two to three times as well as basically any other campaigns for books I've ever seen, beating out both Onyx Path AND Modiphius as well. And now these idiots who somehow pissed away a million dollars demand I buy it or else they shame me when they already will anyway due to my own phenotype.

Reminder their shit take on Kohokia and native cultures in general make Taco Bell look like true Mexican cuisine. Connor and his peers are white as shit too and live in the big cities. Also they're conveniently Cherokee as well.

@Adamska

While the subject of Native Americans is up: I simply don't get why there is such a vast amount of tribals in Shadowrun. Is it a case of them multiplying through magic or just that whiteys decided that "We Injun now"?

The revival of magic created a New Ghost Dance movement where radical members of the tribe were able to launch spirit nukes that massively fucked over the country now that their spiritual beliefs gave them power.

That and gotta remember the cities of the UCAS and other former US parts of the country are like Judge Dredd mega cities where everyone upped and fucked off too after the wars. That aside fuck the dirt gook makers with so little tribal blood in them they make Phil Burnell look like a swarthy robust big nosed Italian. Rate me mad at these fucks but I've done dealings and seen my share of rezzes in the southwest that look like those cartel towns in Mexico so fuck them I'll reserve my sympathies for chief sits with vodka passed out in the middle of the day by the roadside.

Isn't it also convenient that Connor is claiming Cherokee ancestry? You know, the tribe with the lowest bar of proof needed to become a member for? It's also the tribe that is most often used to hide a black ancestor in white people, or a white ancestor in black people.

At best, it's a 1/32 or 1/64 native speaking for a tribe he's not a part of socially given his big city livin' in Seattle, far from the reservations and poor conditions he is claiming oppression from. Another possibility is it's a dude who believed his family's history that hid slave ancestry in his blood and he's actually as native as Elizabeth Warren. The worst case scenario is he's fucking lying about his ancestry like quite a few people like to do.
