Deyshia Hargrave speaks out during a board meeting, asking why Superintendent Jerome Puyau gets a raise when teachers had not had a pay increase in years with constant expectations for better performance with more students.

Puyau responds by calling police and having a police officer slam her on the ground outside to get handcuffed.

Board president calls whole thing "a set up"

while i don't agree with how it was handled, the resource officer is legally entitled to do what he did if she was in fact refusing to leave, and further, refusing to submit to arrest. whether that law is just or not is irrelevant. i'm more interested in how the ACLU and the teacher's union is going to handle this since it seems they are gathering lawyers.

She clearly left the meeting room in compliance with the officer's orders, and although the cameras didn't capture everything that happened in the hallway, she was arrested seconds after they went there. Seems very sketch to me.

I found this comment explaining the situation:
What needs to be looked at is how teachers pay actually went down the last ten years in Vermilion Parish. Teachers used to get 13 checks a year, but the parish claimed they didn’t have money and would have to lay off teachers to make ends meet. The teachers agreed to forego their 13th check to make sure no one would get laid off. Well a year or so after that went into effect, the parish decided they needed to hire another assistant superintendent. So the teachers salary was cut to pay for another assistant superintendent. Also now since the pay scale has been reworked there is no pay increase if a teacher gets their master’s degree. Other local parishes do pay extra for higher educated teachers, but not Vermilion Parish. Now I don’t think people are so much mad that the superintendent was awarded a contract (to keep him employed). They are mad because he got a $38,000 raise and a parish vehicle. Not only that, but one of the board members recently passed away, and his position was filled by someone the board found, not a member that was elected by the people of the parish.

I also dug around and found the pay scale for Vermilion Parish. The first 2 pdf pages are the new pay scale the last page is the old pay scale. Compare the 5 yr mark of the old pay scale to the 5 year mark of the new pay scale. Now compare the 10 year, 15 year, etc. This is where I am saying teachers are actually getting paid less.

The superintendent got a $38,000 raise, which is bullshit. I think they mentioned 20% so that would mean he makes 190k+38k = 228k. I can see why the teachers were so upset.

There is so much corruption going on in the education system (from preschools to universities) it's insane.

oh i agree that something odd happened, however it's difficult to say one way or the other. realistically i've been privy to situations where "resisting arrest" was used when someone kept dragging their feet when told to leave an area and kept complaining or vocalizing discontent. it's something used to book someone before being dropped, as it's a way to get compliance in the short term as few are willing to risk the next step up which is obstructing justice, interfering with police duties, battery/assault on a peace officer, et c. as lame as it is, it is a tool that can be used to get compliance from otherwise recalcitrant persons "under arrest" and being escorted away prior to being let go.

I honestly can't believe that this Boss Hogg wannabe thought he could pull this shit off in the social media age. "BOY, git this uppity woman outta here, and don't treat her too gentle none neither!"
