I had a feeling it was going to be Minecraft, but deep in my heart of hearts I really didn’t want it to happen.
He looks fun, but hair-tearingly annoying to fight against. I imagine Steve’ll be even more difficult to discuss, especially with all the shitposting that’s been going on for about a year or so.
 
The way Sakurai described it, it sounds like Nintendo basically just pestered him into putting Steve in cause Minecraft is huge and he gave in after a while. Understandable tbh.
 
At least it’s not another Pokémon or Fire Emblem character. But to be honest, I was hoping for Crash Bandicoot.

Cool! They made the right choice. Steve is on so many peoples' short list, not to mention the popularity of Minecraft and the deal with Microsoft.

Glad he finally made it. WHERE YOU AT SONY?? Not many slots left...

I love how unlike the other characters, Sakurai makes it VERY CLEAR this was not his choice, mainly because programming it would be hell.

Get ready for some really spaghettous Steve glitches!

In all seriousness, I'm not optimistic or pessimistic - I'm just watching a car sail over a gorge and it's gonna be good viewing whether it sticks the landing or smashes on the rocks.

Joker was a worse pick, Cloud was a worse pick last gen. Besides his popularity, Minecraft is at least a game you could play on Nintendo systems for years now. It wasn't until this year IIRC you could play FF7 on a Nintendo, and I don't even know if you can play Persona 5 yet.

Me too. If the rumors of a Switch port of Crash 4 next year are real, there's a chance he could be added in near the end of the fighter pass to help promote the game. Fingers crossed he'll make it in.

Also, I'm surprised there hasn't been a Monster Hunter rep yet, considering that series' popularity. Since the Switch is getting an exclusive MH game next March, hopefully there's a chance an MH character could be added in around that time frame.
 
I support this because it's hilarious and I saw it coming a mile away, I'm surprised he wasn't one of the first DLC characters considering I'm pretty sure Minecraft is one of the top-sellers on the E-shop. I tried getting into Minecraft but it just never holds my interest, Steve looks like he might have a fun moveset in Smash though.

Sorry Kiwi Farms, we kept trying to warn you that your “literally who” character could never compete with the success of Minecraft, but unfortunately you refused to listen. Day after day you continued to hold on to some false hope that Nintendo would pity your literally who with a new appearance. Unfortunately, no one cares about your dead character. Guess you gotta deal with the hard truth that only relevant characters get into Smash!
