So Super Mario Maker 2 has been released today. Nintendo's Mario level creator has been reborn from the ashes like a phoenix with a new story mode, multiplayer modes, and so on. Whatever thoughts or feelings you have on this game, pour them all out on here!

Of course, you can post Mario Maker memes to farm "Winner" ratings as well. :biggrin:

I bought this mostly for my nephews. From what I've played so far though the developer created levels are well done and the levels it's pushing me have actually been good too. Hopefully the tagging system keeps this from eventually turning into the absolute cesspool that was Mario Maker 1.
 
It's a great idea but all this means is you'll be faced with an onslaught of Asshole Mario levels. This gives me the excuse to post one of the oldest Youtube videos I ever watched.

 
I bought it

Not having a stylus seriously sucks for this game. You can get by with just fingerpainting all your levels, it's not a dealbreaker, but I really, really miss the Wii U version's stylus. When a new version of the Switch comes out, I'd upgrade day one if they included a Galaxy Note-style stylus for it. (and I'd also buy a new version of Elite Beat Agents for the Switch. make it you fuckers)

Other than that, if you played the Wii U or 3DS version, you've played about 80% of this version. There are a lot of new things, sure, but it's ultimately the same game. Considering it's day one, the course quality online right now is still pretty good, since it's just from people who care enough to run out and buy it immediately at full price, but I know we'll see the quality decline over time, especially after Christmas, into the same thing Mario Maker 1 had: nearly impossible ones, gimmick ones, and the middle-ground ones where one out of every 20 might be worth playing.

Adding 3D World as a new style is appreciated, but it's weird considering that was a full 3D game, but here it's locked to 2D courses only, so it's a little too similar to New SMB U's style.

Yeah, I've enjoyed my time with it so far, and I'll enjoy it for a long while. But it really is more like Mario Maker 1.5. Even the music when you're building a level is the same thing. This game really falls in line with how the Switch has so many games that are just cannibalized versions of the Wii U's library, cucking the hell out of that console and making everyone who stuck with it feel a little gypped. We got to play these games several years early, sure, but I'd at least like a way to trade in my Mario Kart 8 and the DLC I bought for half-off of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. And Smash 4, and Splatoon, and Mario Maker, and New SMB U, and I'm sure 3D World after a while.

One more thing: You can leave comments on courses in several ways. Premade reaction stamps, by typing, or by drawing. So you've got crudely-drawn PENISES, and their reactions:

Your average capacitive stylus (the kind you use on an Android Tablet) should suffice for Switch
 
I'm about halfway through the story mode and it's pretty decent so far. Also played a good handful of user created levels. The new gameplay features are pretty good, especially the switch blocks. The grappling hooks are kind of meh, and the low gravity levels are basically an instant skip for me, not a big fan. Slopes are absolutely fantastic and open things up a lot. Level tags are helpful. All in all, I'm digging it.
 
Nintendo needs to have a Mario Maker feature that allows you to create a full campaign or at least a full "world"(4 levels) instead of just single levels. MM1 didn't have this as an option, did MM2 have this as a feature or is it still just single levels?

It's just single levels.

I was stunned that they didn't include the ability to create full "worlds", but when you think about it, they would basically make the development of future 2D Mario games obsolete unless they found a way to completely revolutionize them, which I think would be difficult for that type of game.

Agreed, thats why I was surprised that they didn't even allow 4 level worlds because that would really give the players something bigger to shoot for.

It wouldn't be complete competition though, I mean the more popular levels created by users could be used as templates for future content.
 
I'm having a good time so far. Not having played the first one, I'm not sure if the tags are a new thing, but it helps me find levels that I prefer. Granted, I've seen a fair share of troll levels, but they're not that many (yet) and I don't mind skipping those. I've played user levels more than the story ones at this point, so I should probably get back to the story.
 
I really like the story mode stages where you have to beat the stage with a limitation, e.g. beat a level without jumping.

It takes me back to playing Super Mario Land on the Gameboy, it was the only decent game I had on Gameboy besides Tetris and I played the hell outta that game to the point that I did Pacificist Attempts where I did my best to avoid killing enemies.

Still a little butthurt that they didn't take the time to add in Super Mario Bros 2.
 
Pre ordered the game Thursday and picked it up yesterday.

Yes, it's very similar to the Wii U game where i'm instantly familiar with the maker interface.

Along with that barely started story mode and it's pretty good

Multiplayer is laggy as fuck though

And speaking of the maker interface. Creating levels with the touch isn't bad. Stylus preferred but it works
But creating levels with the controller is a clunky and inferior way to make levels

And also the co op building is just a dumb gimmick basically

Course quality itself is really good Right Now, because the only people playing right now are the people who bought Mario maker 1. Hadn't seen any hot garbage as of now

But of course, the little kids who got it for christmas start turning the entire courseworld into a trash heap. Just like the first game. But that's just nature of online communities in general.

Tons of shit and some gems in between them
 
Does this game let you use amiibos just like the 1st game?
