I remember reading about these guys. That twitter exchange in the OP actually popped up in a recent article about how political organizations are suffering because of "call out culture" and employees being more focused on internal squabbling than the mission of various organizations.

Archived version:

There are bits in there about Sunrise, including some quotes about their perceived ineffectiveness and inability to actually accomplish anything.

Interesting.
I've been wondering about these kind of movements recently. Sunrise, Extinction Rebellion, Fridays/Scientists For Future, they all seem connected.
Started around the same time (2017, 2018), have the same goals, just different regions. Sunrise in the US, XR in the UK, FFF in continental Europe. I wonder how much contact is between them...
XR and Sunrise definitely have snazzier (read: more suitable for arm bands) logos than FFF, these kids really need to get their shit together.

I'm deeply suspicious of these vastly counterproductive organizations which seem to exist to alienate the general public against things actually in their own interest.

They exist to radicalize people who would otherwise have generic, conservative pro-wilderness sentiments into being bughive-adoring urbanists and bioleninists obsessed with self annihilation. Environmentalism for the sake of preserving beauty and keeping our living clean is a naturally anti-urban and anti-globalist endeavor.

That's why I wonder where these groups are coming from. I get that there are actually "deep ecology" types who actually approach this from the viewpoint that humans are garbage and should be actually eliminated or at least drastically reduced. Some of these positions have some ideological consistency.

They rarely engage in that sort of "Extinction Rebellion" crap that can only result in immediately being physically attacked and removed from the street by members of the general public, though, followed by reactionary rejection of the message. There is absolutely no philosophical or practical justification for such behavior.

My opinion is its about humiliating normies as much as possible. This is just one vehicle.

I also have respect for people like Pentti Linkola, as sociopathic as he is, because he went out and lived in a hut in the woods or whatever. It's principled even if I think it's dumb.

I was specifically thinking about him when I made that comment. He makes his arguments, in a manner that they might be considered. Jumping in front of people going to work does nothing of the sort, it simply convinces everyone you're a complete asshole.

They did some useless stuff with a bunch of kids to demand a bunch of random stuff:
