i am proud of you for eyeing the chatter on this site with skepticism. i have my ear to the ground about such things, and the pals of mine who work in the popcorn and popcorn accessories bidness are of the impression that something hasn't smelled right since the Ghostbusters fiasco, and the negative press that Suicide Squad is receiving is unwarranted in to the extreme! and nobody is certain of the cause - except that it doesn't appear to be the film itself.

the critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes alone places the film below such disorganized "artsy" clusterfucks as Gummo and Trash Humpers, films which only sat well with hipsters and fans of director Harmony Korine (but i repeat myself). and i'm not the only person who'll be floored if Suicide Squad is worse than The Legend of Tarzan, let alone Batfleck v. Superman: Dawn of Dishsoap, which coincidentally also sits at 27% now despite its solidly lukewarm reception by moviegoers.

a lot of careers in journalism ride on subservience to one of dozens of SJW taskmasters, which is something we've been hearing about for years. don't be surprised if the recent trend of journalists conspicuously disagreeing with the audience over nerd-targeted films with male leads versus nerd-targeted films with STRONG INDEPENDENT WOMYN turns out to be more spillover from Gamergate. but also don't be surprised if it's just autism as usual.

haha nice, show us some caps
You seem like the trustworthy type, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. I will say that a lot of critics in the LA area (more specifically blogger types like Devin Faraci, Drew McWeeney, and Jen Yamato) are friends with each other and share similar opinions on politics, so I wouldn't be surprised if there has been at least some collusion. But until I get hard evidence of this, it falls purely into the realm of conjecture for me (albeit well-founded conjecture).

Why are 95% of all Will Smith movies shitty?

Because he's really not that talented of an actor. Most of the "good" Will Smith movies either had a fantastic script or amazing co stars. They weren't good because of him.

I never thought of it that way, but it makes so much sense. You get an "informative" for this revelation, thanks.

Er... to add to this, I guess there's been a spate of people bitching on social media that the Joker and Harley Quinn do not have a healthy relationship.

That's actually a good thing. Because it isnt healthy and they should acknowledge that.

Yes, people being unable to tell the difference between reality and fiction to the point where they're bothered by the relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn being "unhealthy" is definitely a good thing.

Yesterday, we reported that Suicide Squad cost $175 million and that it would need to earn $750-800 million just to break even. While the film is tracking for a huge opening weekend, it will be interesting to see if the film has legs in the face of negative reviews from critics and possibly audiences. The movie needs all the help it can get, but it doesn’t look like it will be receiving any from the Chinese market.

The "we need the Chinese market to survive" new paradigm is ludicrous as fuck. But hey, is not my money. Good luck, Warner.

Ummmmm... Im sorry for being dumb but I dont get if you agree or not Calcium. I think its a good thing because many do wish to have the relationship Joker has with Harley, . I would love it if you elaborated on your point.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever read in this place so far. And this is a place full of autistic people. Congratulations.

People who are upset about the relationship of two fictional characters are as dumb as people who think Suicide Squad is giving out relationship advice. The relationship between Joker and Harley has never been portrayed in a positive light and Harley has always been a tragic character in that regard. Showing an unhealthy relationships in all its ugliness provides more meaningful commentary on the subject than people bitching on social media because they think that portraying an unhealthy relationship is the same as endorsing it. It is as inane as getting upset over the bad father-son relationship Darth Vader had with Luke.

What kind of math-a-magic comes up with, "we spent 175 mill, so we need like 800 mill to break even"? I understand that's gross ticket sales, but from what I can tell about half of gross gets kicked back to the studio, so this seems like its still inflated by over double.

That doesn't include marketing costs (over 100 million minimum), the cut the cinemas take and other costs.

A rule of thumb is to add the marketing costs to the budget, then multiply that by about 3. Thats how much a film needs to break even.

*sigh*

Marketing and distribution costs. Also, those box office sites don't publish the sales in tv rights (and they depend on the boxo ffice gross). Also, merchandising.

Look, we're talking about two literal comic book villains. They're not meant to be a model of clean living and healthy boundaries.

Actors who get that coveted guaranteed to get you a good opening weekend slot will always have a job. Will Smith is both black and completely inoffensive, that and a mild amount of talent got him that top spot for a while. But remember, even Tom Cruise had that spot. And he's a fucking weirdo and a jackoff and a creepy cultist to boot.

There's a reason not many people have that spot for long.

Joker and HQ will never have a healthy relationship; healthy relationship is only possible between gays or between lesbians.

Ah, ok see that makes more sense. I didn't realize the the costs figure was exclusive of marketing. I figured that was included. There also seems to be some dispute about how much of the gross take goes to the studio. My source was Roger Ebert who says ~50 but you guys seem to say it's more like a third.

Will Smith is part of the same cult.
