Yep, but they’re pan fried (you can make them baked in the oven but I’ve lived in Sweden for over 20 years and never once saw a Swede make them like that) and we almost always have them with jordgubbssylts (strawberry jam) and whipped cream. Some like them with hallonsylt (raspberry) or blueberries. Lingonsylt which does taste like cranberry (tränbär) is for the meatballs which isn’t terrible actually.

Michigan at 4:30 am and drive up US 41 to Houghton, just to get to Suomi Restaurant when the doors opened at 7am during the week, just to beat the crowds for breakfast. If you showed up past 7:45 or so, it was an hour wait in a line that stretched quite a ways back from the front door, so plan accordingly if you want to make a stop there. Well worth it. And yes. even U.P. Maple Syrup is better than the watered down Vermont Syrup that Tarl used to tout

So were mine. My second set are Norwegian and Argentinian. I used to hate it here with a passion. They say Swedes have “little brother” syndrome when it comes to The States and man you never hear the end of it. Constant yip-yapping about how bad US is while their own country burns down around their ears. But I will give credit where credit is due; Sweden handled COVID like a boss which is to say they did absolutely nothing. Shut down schools/corporate offices but everything else stayed open for the most part. I didn’t even see a mask until I went back to see family in California. Now THAT was surreal. All the dystopian rules. OMG! That was the first time since I moved here that I couldn’t wait to get back, but I’m digressing. In my experience, Norwegians are a more jovial bunch than Swedes by far.

Thanks for the feels, Nig. Yeah, my brother succombed to interstitial pulmonary fibrosis which was caused by asbestos exposure from being on the U.S.S. Shangri-La from 1964-1968 during the Vietnam Era. He worked in the boiler room, and was constantly exposed to asbestos infused grey paint used almost daily in the area, flying debris, (no filter masks nor hearing protection for the men down there in that era) and toxic fumes in that environment. The US Navy denied him disability until he finally received a lump sum payment in March of 2025 after fighting for it for nearly six years. It was a 20+ year loss of lung capacity for him, culminating in being on oxygen constantly for the last 4 years of his life . We met yearly in the U.P at his home in Gladstone, Michigan during July 4th week, and spent many an hour traveling around various sites there, laughing and trading bullshit stories among ourselves, having a wonderful time. The week was always finished watching the Fireworks on July 4th that were launched adjacent to the Gladstone Lighthouse, with their reflections off Lake Michigan ,was always a nice way to end a week spent with him before I headed back home the next morning.

I truly loved being up there with him during those yearly traditional trips, and enjoying 72 degree temperatures with a mild breeze coming off Lake Michigan, while the folks back home in Omaha were sweating through high humidity 95 degree days was a great escape for me. I am going to take a break from that trip this year, but intend to go back up there again at some point. Going back this year would probably just feel like chasing ghosts, but I will get there.

Good Lord, yes! I remember an uncle-in-law visiting in the States whose daughter was a holy terror and getting lectured by him on how one must not spank one's child—ever. Dummies. Little Solveig was a holy terror. But she grew up to come back home (to Vesterheim, anyhow), sing like a songbird at our family reunion. Then make fun of 101- year- old Aunt Sally for actually speaking an antique- sounding dialect of Norwegian rather than Jamtland Swedish. That is the constant them of this thread since the great boobsqueeze of September, 2024 started the entire ball rolling to where it is today. Folks would show up here days and hours before each scheduled court appearance, running countdown timers, just itching for the next shoe to drop for Tarl, and always leave empty handed until the next countdown timer session, nothing would happen, in an endless cycle. That is just the reality of the court system, it does not run conveniently for a grand movie climax, but crawls at a snail's pace. And so it goes.
