Firstly, much like Christianity, there's no single entity called "Buddhism". They both have sects, and those sects LOVE fighting over miniscule differences in doctrine, so it's impossible to determine which is the real "Buddhism". Secondly, the requirements to reach "enlightenment" (although they do vary from sect to sect) are nigh impossible for a living human to reach; you basically would have to dedicate your entire life to Buddhism in order to have a hope of enlightenment, and even then you'd probably fail due to some random thought or getting a stiffie at the wrong time. Christianity is a whole lot more forgiving, treating people like people, and not expecting sainthood out of them. And finally, the emphasis on begging is really disgusting to me. It's one thing to take a vow of poverty and raise your own food at the monastery, it's another thing to travel from to town to town with your begging bowl, imposing your needs on half-starving villagers and guilting them into feeding you. That's definitely street-shitter behavior.

I'm fairly informed on what is taught, but not necessarily how it's taught, so this is surprising to me. It sounds like something only the stricter sects would do, specifically in monasteries to aid fellow monks. I mean, you'd think that a goal as lofty and difficult to attain as true enlightenment would be understood as something to incrementally progress towards over multiple lifetimes as opposed to trying to achieve it as quickly as possible. Like, I get that is obviously what you'd want to do, but at the end of the day, it's going to take eons anyway. Hopefully that makes sense. I've never been one for organized religion. I understand why it's there, but ultimately, our souls are our own to guide. My philosophy is to take their good teachings but buck the institutions.
