General consensus now is that it's not even rarer, just overdiagnosed in women and underdiagnosed as men.

Men are less likely to seek mental health care in general and, if they show more severe symptoms, more likely to end up being evaluated in the criminal justice system and slapped with an AsPD diagnosis. Nobody's sharing their feelings with a DoJ shrink. Anecdotally, milder symptoms tend to be attributed to something else unless evaluated by a specialist. You have to recognize something is wrong, which usually takes hitting rock bottom, and have a professional who recognizes that they're out of their depth. Milder cases of BPD just straight-up look confusing. I think the best description I've ever read was something about how no one expects such sudden and extreme behavior from someone who had previously seemed so normal, although I can't find it now. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to be evaluated during a crisis and have symptoms of another condition attributed to BPD due to suicidality.

That said, with Tarl, I really don't see it. He needs a professional evaluation, though, because something's clearly very wrong in his skull.
