I was harsh, all right. The thing is, her words, stated beliefs, and actions paint a clear picture of who she is, which is a low-functioning BPD who lost her kids and is enough of an impulsive berserker to feel justified in calling the police on someone who helped her. She's a dime-a-dozen caricature of a Cluster B waif who relies on the largesse of many a Cap'm Savaho. But they will not save her. Neither will she save herself until she understands what a carcinoma of a personality she is. I believe she has zero insight into why she leaves a wake like an EF5 and contributed to the decline and fall of Tarl. She's the biggest asshole around. She needs a wakeup call, or she will end up being one of those grizzled shopping cart hags hanging out at libraries and making beer money by selling toothless blowjobs. As bad as BPDs are when they're young, they are far less comfortable and cherished after they hit the wall and nobody notices them anymore. If she stays terminally online, she'll have to catfish thirsty suckers when she's old. She's clever, but I don't know if she's intelligent enough to want to mend her noisome ways. It's one of the most crippling disorders around, and Sam has it in spades, reacting to every situation without evidence of foresight or planning, just lash out and screw the consequences.

The older I get, the more it seems like this moment just never comes for most people, and you have to just give up on them.

If someone's main problem is their lack of self-awareness and introspection, then they're never going to just wake up and notice that about themselves one day—because that would take introspection. And they won't ever see it if you try to point it out to them—because that would take self-awareness.
I used to be Mr. Optimistic, giving everybody a fifteenth chance to try to get through to them and help them. But with stuff like this, there's just no fixing it.

If she notices that she habitually places blame for her own noxious actions on others ("external locus of control"), she might start to compare and contrast with others and eventually learn (with help) how to cope and how to ride the waves of feeling shameful and unworthy WITHOUT lashing out. But nobody else can do that for her. Tarl can't. In fact, paying for her attorney was the opposite of tough love. He was naive. Your new way of letting these human dumpster fires keep on burning is tough to do, but pretty sane.
